The Shadow Remenants

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

Anyone who remembers me may remember that i started a log on an DIY army called the Grail Templars a few months back

Well... that kinda fell by the wayside as newer, more interesting conversion opportunities arose ~tries to hide the VC army~

BUT, I am on task for space marines again, this time with a new and improved, and dare i say it, different than average army.

The basic backstory (which I will be writing up when I get around to it) is that the remains of several minor marine chapters got abandoned on an edge world after finally reclaiming it, and were understandably a bit miffed, so, after stealing the one remaining strike cruiser still in orbit (the other ships having either fled or been blown up) they decided to secede from the wonderful imperium and go about serving the emperor in their own special way. That way being to attack and take over imperial ships and facilities they see as being misused, as well as going after things they see as threats to the Imperium as a whole. Now, usually such an action would bring the forces of the inquisition to bear on their collective backsides, however, one fairly high-ranking Ordo Xenos Inquisitor has their back, and uses them to root out factions he dislikes within the imperium as well as protecting it from external threats. Due to not having regular contact with any fortress monasteries, forge worlds, or even half-decent trade links, they often have to steal, salvage and otherwise repair their armour from parts taken from other space marine chapters. Also, since they don't have the facilities to make new space marines, their scouts are actually genetically- and cybernetically-enhanced wolves with guns strapped to their spines!

TL:DR, they like the emperor, don't like the imperium, and their best buddy is an inquisitor. Oh, and they steal stuff...

Wordyness aside, I know what you guys are here for, and that is pictures! Several of the models in this army I have looted directly from my failed Grail Templars project, and other things have been made especially for this army, particularly the... well, you'll see.

First up, the first painted unit (half unit actually, the rest is on it's way)

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0265.jpg

One of them is quite a bit bluer than the rest, I've been using Astronomican Grey for the most part, and he was an experiment with Shadow Grey to see how well it fit... I'm putting him down to a learning experience and making the excuse that he keeps his armour cleaner than most of the rest of the army... yeah, let's go with that. The sarge provides me with a decent place to practice what I'm going to be doing with all of the power weapons in the army

Green lightningness. Relic Blades and Force Weapons will be done differently.

Next up, tanky goodness

This is Lamashtu "The Eraser", named after the Babylonian goddess. It's certainly lived up to its namesake having, before it was fully painted, erased a good few dozen tyranids in it's first outing on the table.

One thing you may notice is the presence of writing on the side. This is something I'm planning to carry over to most of the rest of the army, having it pop up on any model that has the space for me to paint squiggles onto. Yet to find out a reasonable excuse to actually have these, but I'm sure I'll think of something.

Next up is the recently demoted captain of the third company (the various remnants of the force organised themselves on a company basis, which focused more on providing strategic flexibility rather than dumping every big gun into one, every hacky slashy person into another etc.) If you read my Grail Templars log, you may recognise him

The last picture shows how I will be doing all of the army's Relic blades. It's a rather odd mix, blue and red, but to my eyes it works pretty well. I know I'm not the best painter in the world, but I have yet to paint a full army before (despite having been in the hobby for a good 14 years now, I keep getting sidetracked by conversion ideas) So getting these lads to a half-decent tabletop standard will be quite an achievement for me.

Speaking of Conversion Ideas...

Ferros, the Wolf-Pattern Dreadnought

Not for nothing am I referred to as my local GW's resident insane converter. This pup is the first of 3 Wolf-Pattern Dreads that this army will be fielding, one normal, one venerable, and one ironclad equals a lot of puppy-shaped pain for my enemies.

So, let me know what you think guys, another Wolf-Pattern dread is in the works, as well as a whole lot of other fun things, including 2 more captains, a chapter master, 2 varieties of chaplain and librarian, and a Land Raider Redeemer.

C&C very much appreciated, let me know what you think ^^

That Wolf Pattern dreadnought is definitely crazy, so it's a reputation well earned, lol. I like it though. I'm a bit of a converter myself, my whole army is currently being overhauled to be 100% converted, so I always love to see what other people are doing to mutilate GW's boring plastics. :)

Very nice all round !!! I only have one suggetion, and it is in regards to the rear legs on the dread. It will look alot more natural if you remove the vertical pieces in the rear legs. I realise it may be too late for this one, but its something to keep in mindfor the future two.

Cheers,

Jono

I have to agree with Grotsmasha about the legs of the Wolf-dread, they look slightly wonky.

I built mine after the example of bobpanda, which seems a more natural pose to me.

Dreadrider by Bobpanda

Demonmachine by me

Just some ideas for your consideration ^^

I also really like the pose and paintjob of the 3rd company captain.

Hey guys, have some delicious update-flavoured updates

Thanks for all the comments so far by the way, they all help

@Grotsmasher and Cathar the Great: Yeah, i'd twigged on the legs the moment he was finished. I was working from some spare sentinel legs from a while back, and as such was working without instructions or a clear idea of what I wanted to do with him, hence the rather odd nature of this guys legs, this has been rectified with dread 2,as will be shown shortly.

@Veteran Sergeant: Plastic mutilation you say? here's some more for you!

first up, wolfdread 2, who is leaping at someone with the express intention of mauling their face

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0271.jpg

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0272.jpg

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0273.jpg

The idea behind him was a sort of mobile anti aircraft platform, hence the upwards-pointing autocannons. Of course, he can always hunker down and point that firepower at some poor footslogger. Having actually had access to instructions(!), I've made the legs in proper digitigrade style.

Next up, the War-Leader (Chapter Master). He has been through various incarnations, but alas, none of them looked suitably badass, and were overshadowed by the terminator chaplain (more on him later). So he had a massive overhaul in the form of starting from the chaos terminator lord kit and various parts from other places and, well, here's the result

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0276.jpg

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0275.jpg

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0274.jpg

With him, i was trying very hard to give him an suitably nails appearance while maintaining the "We looted most of our kit" look, as such, he has dreadshin shoulderpads, the big halberdy thing from the BA dread sprue, and a tank door as a storm shield... which he tore from it's housing himself.

There's still a few little details that need to be worked on (making the door look damaged, hiding a few connections) but he's maybe 95% done

Next up, the 1st and 2nd company captains

1st

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0282.jpg

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0283.jpg

2nd

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0280.jpg

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0281.jpg

These guys have again been looted from some previous incarnations of space marine armies, an were a lot of fun to build. I decided to plonk them on some pretty-pretty resin bases. They've been through a lot of tinkering over the time i've had them, but the end result looks pretty good to my eyes

finally, remember i mentioned a badass chaplain?

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0278.jpg

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r605/Servallier/Nicks%20Warhammer/IMG_0279.jpg

His weapon is known among me and my gaming buddies as the "Buster Crozius". He's been lurking around in my collection for a while, and I'm very happy to finally have a use for him (Originally he headed up my small Deathwatch army). He's made in a similar way to my Chapter Master, but with different dreadshins and a CSM head.

As usual, C&C very much appreciated, tell me what you think guys, it keeps me motivated!

Thanks for alll the replies so far guys. At the moment I'm at home from uni for easter, and away from my fancy camera, but with my beloved 12 years (approx) worth of failed-project bitz-boxes.

Alas, very little of it is salvageable, however, among the bitz i found half a rhino sprue (the other half is in my uni house) and a still-boxed ironclad dread, so once i get another sentinal, the final part of subproject: Wolfpack will be under way

Also, I've made a start on my sternguard, based on the good ol' Doghouse pattern truescaling design, with some mods of my own and a lot of cut corners. Pictures will happen when i get a new cable for my phone or access to the home camera. I'm likely to be doing a fair bit of painting while i'm here, as my nephew's caught the marine bug and has started an army of his own, so i'll be doing some tutoring for him

So, watch this space for more updates to the Shadow Remenants!
