JAMOB
I have a couple of questions about the Honour Guard squad. I was planning to make one, and have some basic models planned out (legs/bases only at this point). 1) what is the best layout for them? Optimal gear? 2) should I get the command squad box for them, and if not what set is best? 3) it says "any honour guard can replace his boltgun, chainsword and/or bolt pistol with...", does that include the sanguinary noviate? My brother says it doesnt, but I think it does. Thanks -JAMOB
Deschenus Maximus
1) Generally, 3-4 meltas and that's it. In some lists, this can vary so the squad fulfills a more specialised function, but the loadout I suggest is a good "safe bet". 2) If you can get the Sanguinary Novitiate parts from somewhere else, the Command Squad box is not necessary, though it does contain some nice parts. 3) Unfortunately, your brother is right. The Blood Angels FAQ on the GW website clarified this issue.
knife&fork
1) what is the best layout for them? Optimal gear? 1) There is no "best layout", the gear they take should work together with the rest of your list. Think of HG as a support unit, it might be tempting to kit them out with all kinds of stuff but they are only 5 guys in power armor. They can't take enough punishment to act on their own. However, a couple of meltas as stated above is going to be part of just about any good build. My preferred honor guard for jump lists look like this: Noviate regular dude regular dude stormshield+melta stormshield+melta jump packs, of course The noviate obviously provides a FnP/FC bubble. The meltas help me open tanks for the rest of the army and the stormshields are there to help my HQ (dante or mephiston) survive assaults by going base 2 base with powerfists, force weapons and other nasty stuff. The storm shields also make sure that the melta survives as long as possible. That's the base, if points allow I'll throw in a power fist and maybe a flamer. IK Viper
I know you dont want your HG crashing into really big squads due to small size but I think when I get mine built up ill include a Blood Champ for the WS 5 PW attacks, mine will be JP and kitted with 2-4 melta but if your going to be BA you might as well make use of a FC power weapon at WS 5 right. Does anyone have good success with a 4 Plasma Gun squad as an anti-Terminator/AS +2 unit? FnP will make those plasma alot safer. probably not worth the Blood Champ though b/c your going to want to rapid fire inside of 12 inches.
JamesI
1k Viper, remember if you take the blood champion then the most melta/plasmas you can take is 3. In an HG with the champ, I would aim more for Close combat, 1-2 storm shields/powerfist/and maybe 2 meltas. I have run a 4 plasmagun HG, in fact that is how my HG is currently built. I like them in my DOA lists, but as I don't tend to play pure DOA often they don't get used often.
The Crimson Cartel
I've had great success running mine with a mixture of LC's,PW's a fist, chapter banner and jp Libby in tow. Usually in a raven. They aren't suited for every job,but I point them at what needs to die, and it usually does. But its all about what you are trying to do with them. I find they are more scalpel than sledgehammer. -CC
