Writing Fluff for "established" chapters?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I wanted to get some opinions on from you guys on writing fluff/IA's for established chapters by GW. I have been kicking around ideas for my own chapter, and am also contemplating writing a piece for submission to the Black Library, which got me thinking that fleshing out an established chapter might be better than creating completely new chapter. I know both have been done before but I wanted to see the opinions of the community at large.

The chapter I had in mind was the Iron Knights which have a skeletal foundation but not a full narrative like first and second founding chapters, but have the crusading theme that I have been looking for.

I'm kinda doing the same with the Rainbow Warriors. All that is known is that their Planet is known as "Prism" and there are two known Marines: Brother Varagol and Brother Vermillion (the later being featured in a Rogue Trader Era picture getting shot by what looks to be a Sister of Battle, but back then there were no SoB's, at least not in the way we know them...) Other than that there is nothing about them, one of those Chapters that GW made and then did nothing with....

I don't know anything about the Iron knights, so I can't really help with any details on them, but if you have a good idea for them then I say go for it :)

I'll be keeping my eye out for anything you decide to write about them :D

I think it could work as long as you know that GW/FW might end up coming out with something in the future about them that might contradict your fluff. There are a lot of abandoned chapters out there that GW mentioned at some point but not much else is known. I think if you really have some good ideas and put some good time and effort into it that a BL submission would be awesome.

I also think that this (liber) is one of the best places to put up ideas and see how the community looks at them. There are some Liberites who have been in the hobby for over 20 years who have some intimate knowledge of fluff.

So essentially after all my rambling I say go for it!

the idea for the story at the moment is the evacuation of the Legio Gryphonicus. Gryphonne IV is recorded as destroyed by tyranid invasion and originally all were presumed lost, but fluff also states that the Legio fought at the Eye of Terror a century later during the 13th black crusade. Someone had to buy them enough time to pull out, and in this case it would be the Iron Knights. Obviously when a titan legion falls a chapter isn't going to amount to alot, but as a delaying force to save the most powerful instruments of war available to the imperium...
Black Library would prefer you to use a GW Chapter rather than make up one of your own. IMO it is better to use a Chapter that there is little known about as you can craft them to your liking & there is more room for creativity. I believe this is what Sarah Cawkwell did with the Silver Skulls. Have you read the new submission guidelines for this years submissions? Best of luck with the story mate, hoping to submit my own story this year too.

My advice is to stay VERY far away from the Iron Knights. They are what I call an "active" Chapter (one in which new official fluff is commonly seen), and actually belong to Neil Hodgson of GW. The official fluff you see for them is actually from him, so DIY "fan" material on them is likely to end up as ignored from any official standpoint. You are much better off looking at a Chapter that isn't "active".

Another bad choice would be the Doom Legion, which I believe actually belongs to Matt Ward.

Thanks, I didn't know that those were 'active' chapters that people at GW already were working with, I might have to dig into the background some more or just go with my own chapter.

The list of officially named GW chapters is quite long. I think if you look over the list and find one that was merely mentioned you should be good. That would free you up for anything.

This is a pretty solid list on Lexicanum.

Hope that helps!
