Horrible, no.

But not up to par with new edition codexes.

IIRC, the SW Dex had a little bit of leway, by being partly based off the SM dex, which got a boost itself when the SM dex was redone.

Deldar, had a single good build (again IIRC) which was starting to feel the strain come the start of 5th, where the newer Codexes were pushing the boundaries.

the SW dex didnt get much of a buff from the new edition of the SM dex. the power they had was that they could have 2 power weapons in a unit and then add in others (up to 4).

the DE book i dont think was feeling much of the strain, its just that the same list was being played for 10 years....

Maybe because... the GK don't use some of that stuff...

Contemptor... Old legion relics as I understand it... Now why might the GKs have none of these legions relics left over from their days as the great 2nd legion! Maybe FW dropped the ball here >.<

Ceastus... Now in theory the GKs might use these... but GKs also do a lot of teleporting... So maybe if they have ships that are better equipped for doing that they don't use assault craft as much as other marines...

Ok Storm Eagle is a bit weird and I'm not sure what the fluff behind that is... I guess it was a let's give other chapters a 'Stormraven' but because it costs twice as much we had better pimp it out. Although the GK Storm Ravens do have their upsides.

Stormshields... Well according to SGM Draigo... GK's do use these.... and certainly have in the past.... I'm guessing Game Balance here... Anyone want to see what play testing with Paladins with a 2++ in close combat and a 3++ from shooting was like?

Predators... I don't know why they don't use them... Maybe they don't feel they are required for their primary purpose and that Land Raiders do the job just as well for them... and being the GKs they do not have the same problems other chapters have when it comes to getting new Land Raiders.

Also note that GW might be saying you can't give X or Y to X or Y... I know they got very upset when FW gave every chapter the Landspeeder Storm.

DE book was fine... except it had 2 lists... I guess the biggest loss was that you couldn't zoom around and do raider flybys in 5th ed with warriors...

The old SW rules were pretty tough due to a combination of being updated by C:SM and some of older rules becoming slightly broken with changes to the core rules which lead to everything evening out. I know my 13th company list (slightly different again.) horrified some people who had never played against it before when my squad leader put down 8 powerfist attacks in one turn.

As for most FW things... I would say most of them are meh... and FW is more of a fore fun narrative kinda place... Most people fear FW because they don't know what it is or they think of the super-heavies. In most normal games however most FW stuff is pretty middle of the road.

I personally think one of the best FW units is the Deathstorm droppod. It is cheap and if you seen the damage it can do it seems too cheap... but then you have other games when you are playing against mech or your opponent plays in reserves and it won't do anything... If you use it later in the game it can become just as dangerous to you. I'm assuming it hasn't been updated in Imperial Armour Apocalypse I (2nd ed).

Some older codices are fine and some get hit by edition changes. The Eldar for example only dominated because of the vehicle damage rules (Which due to Eldar special rules which some said were broken...) lead to Eldar vehicles being hard to destroy. Once they became easier to destroy Eldar became meh with a lot of people just trying to survive and take objectives the end of thegame. Then GW started makign everything cheaper or better and Eldar became really sad. Eldar transports now just cost too much and the internal balance in the codex isn't great so some units are obvious choices.

Black Templars are not too bad... again like the space wolves due to broken rules and now due to having their equipment FAQed to be like C:SM but with no change in points costs.

Anyway I'm going off track... Everyone does not need everything... That being the case GW should just make one gaint army list and tell everyone to counts depending on what army they are taking.

The Rending change and no consolidate into CC hit them hard. Falcons are still stupidly difficult to kill, and still as good for last turn Star Engine Tank Shocks off objectives.

But Harlies not Rending on to-hit, and not being able to wipe out a unit and consolidate to safety into another, that hit Eldar badly.
