henrywalker
I spent a few hours today with the new paints at my LGS and i was thinking that it would be useful to know just what they are all like. To that end I thought that as we try each new paint we can post a review under this topic. I've borrowed a few more which i will be testing tonight and i will post a few reviews as the evening goes on. henrywalker
Starting off with 'Ceramite White' this is the base coat white paint so i expected it to cover very well. I have to say i was disappointed by the coverage, it did seem to do better than the old skull white but it still required a second coat. That being said the second coat then did give a decent coating. I've heard other people complain that th paint was chalky but i didn't find this. It also wasn't as thick as some foundation paints were. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250332-the-new-paints/#findComment-3034678 Share on other sites
henrywalker
Nuln Oil. well I hope Nuln oil is representative of all the shades because it really did its job perfectly. I just used it to shade a coat of army painter wolf grey. It doesn't pool as the old washes did and it finds the shadows perfectly. henrywalker
my last one for the night, I just used Casandora Yellow shade and lamenters yellow glaze in conjunction with some nice results. I attempted a new method to paint the yellow shoulder pad on my space wolf. I primed it white and then added several coats of the shade. it covered evenly and had a good vibrant color. It didn't get pulled to the edges by surface tension as used to happen with the old washes. I ended up with a good yellow. I then added a single layer of the yellow glaze and was impressed with the difference it made. It did a very good job of evening out the colour and brightening the yellow Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250332-the-new-paints/#findComment-3034737 Share on other sites
Freakiq
Base: The Fang A dark grey/blue, goes on smoother than the old foundation paints but less chalky and requiring less thinning. Layer: Russ Grey Akin to Shadow Grey but with a slightly less blue tinge, has a more rubbery feel than the old paints which helps it go on smoother and makes control easier. Layer: Fenrisian Grey A darker version of Space Wolves grey, like the other new pants it has a rubbery feel akin to the P3 line which makes blending a lot easier. Base: Balthasar Gold A dark gold, almost bronze-like, goes on like a regular paint with very little thinning needed, cover in one layer even when thinned. Requires a bit of shaking before first use as it seems to separate. With this paint I'll never have to basecoat all gold details with Scorched Brown and Bronze to get a great coverage. Conclusion: The new Space Wolf trio of colours give great results, the test model turned out slightly more grey than my usual Shadow/Space Wolf -Grey mix. I'll be using these straight out of the pot which means no more mixing too find the right tone. The consistency is incredibly smooth and require little thinning, the coverage especially of the Base paints is great, like the one's of the old foundation paints but without the washed-out colours and the thick consistency. Badaab
So, imagine my surprise when I went down to the local game store Saturday to pick up a new bottle of Shadow Grey, only to discover all the paint colors I'd gotten used to over the past 15 or so years are gone... I picked up a few colors to experiment with- here are my notes: -Necron Compound (Dry): this goes on well over a black undercoat, but leaves the models looking a little 'dusty' for my liking. I could see the applications of this color on terrain and basing, but likely not Space Marines. -Skrag Brown (Layer): this is almost a 1 for 1 replacement of Vermin Fur/Vermin Brown. -Screaming Skull (Layer): basically Bleached Bone, but a little more to the green side of the spectrum. Will work nicely with colors like P3's Cryx Bane Base and Cryx Bane Highlight- both colors I've been mixing with Snakebite Leather to good effect for a green-tinted bone color. -Administratum Grey (Layer): this is basically a Fortress Grey replacement. It's a little thicker than I'd like, and will likely go back to the Vallejo Game Color Stonewall Grey. -Nurgling Green (Layer): this is similar to the old Rotting Flesh color, but is a bit darker and a bit more into the green spectrum. Will likely have to mix this with the new Screaming Skull to get the same color of Rotting Flesh, but luckily I have an extra bottle of the old color. -Emperor's Children (Layer): I picked this up because my bottle of Warlock Purple had dried up. It was disappointing, but I had bought the bottle of paint back in 1996 when originally painting the Escher for Necromunda. The new color is a little more towards the pink side, which is nice, because the only thing I really used Warlock Purple for was in painting faces- mixed with Dwarf Flesh for lips, makeup, etc. -Sotek Green (Layer): this color is really a blue... but seems to be like a slightly darker version of Hawk Turquoise. Temple Guard Blue looks like the direct replacement for Hawk Turquoise. -Warpstone Glow (Layer): I picked this up because I always pick up the new medium green paint in any line when I can. This color is FINALLY the replacement for the old Emerald Green GW did away with in 1997-98 when they swapped to the black top paint bottle line. I do still have about 5 bottles of the Emerald Green around, as I cleaned out GW Mail Order when they eliminated the color... this was/is the color of my Aurora Chapter! Anyway, nice to see an old friend brought back (the P3 Gnarls Green was close, but not the right vibrancy). Also, more notes on Aurora Chapter below. -Skavenblight Dinge (Layer): this is a nice dark grey, with a little bit of a brown tint to it. I can see if being great for NMM silvers, as well as for basing. Might also be solid for painting wolf pelts, but that's not something I do often. -Runelord Brass (Layer): this is a nice, muted brass color. I did a little mock-up of this with the new Warplock Bronze (a base color) as the shade and Mithril Silver added to highlight, and it came out nice, especially after a wash with the Devlan Mud. -Warplock Bronze (Base): See above- but its basically Tin Bitz. I'm pleased they have fixed the fluidity of this color, because I'd had bad results with Tin Bitz in the past... and its a shame, because it was such a great color to work with! -Brass Scorpion (Layer): another metallic color I picked up to experiment with, hoping to use it on my Grey Knights force. However, it's a little too orange for my liking, and will leave it out of my brass/bronze going forward. Maybe this one will make an appearance on fantasy models, or possibly Ork stuff, but I think I'd prefer gold to this on Space Marines. and... the textured paints- I picked up Stirland Mud and Astrogranite, but haven't had a chance to use them on anything yet. Hopefully I can experiment with these soon, but I don't really have anything in the pipe to try them on as of yet (as I'm finishing up a bunch of half-finished one off projects from the past few years). Lastly (I know, bear with me here), I'm a little disappointed to see GW take on the chapter I've been playing/painting/modelling for the last 15 years or so- the Aurora Chapter. While on the one hand its nice to see the chapter get a little more exposure, I do like the 'freedom' playing a lesser-known chapter offers regarding background, painting, etc. Going forward, when I bring the models out, I'm going to have to listen to people ask questions about why my force doesn't line up with GW's new literature... sigh. And once I've got some more brush practice back, I plan to begin work again on my Aurora Chapter again, but I've been away from the brushes for a pretty extended period and need more practice regaining my 'eye.' -Joe Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250332-the-new-paints/#findComment-3035893 Share on other sites
captain sox
In all honesty, I have OCD, and I don't really like change. I stocked up on more than enough of the old paints I really needed, however I really wanted to try some of the new Dry and Textured paints. Dry: I've used the Necron Compund and Hellion Green and I love 'em. It took a little bit of practise to get the right look I wanted, but I figured it out ant I'm really happy with both. The Necron Compound is great for highlights on black and dark metallics. The Hellion Green is sharp on dark to medium greens. Texture: I got a bottle of the Armageddon Dust, mainly because the last thing I want to do after spending hours on a mini, is to spend more time basing it. Gluing flock, painting it, layering it and drybrusing is much too time consuming for me. I love painting models, but hate basing. This stuff is the bomb! (in my opinion) and I'm in the process of redoing the bases on my entire army. Again, it took a bit of practise, but I got it and love it. It goes on well, and gives you a really good base in one coat. I was just on the verge of giving up of the GW range (I'm 75% Vallejo and 25% GW now) but I must say I will continue to use these products. I'm really happy with these. Skoby
Mephiston red is amazing, really nice colour that covers well but for what I want it was a little bright so I went with khorne red, this is a brilliant base layer if you want really deep reds and carroburg crimson shades it nicely without being too harsh (like it seems to be with Mephiston red) wazdakka red goes on nicely and blends easily, finally wild rider red, bit brighter than I expected but blends really well to give a good highlight to a rich dark red. Ceramite white is epic, I got a smooth coat first layer that needed just a tiny bit of touch ups. I think the trick to this is getting the consistency just right, it needs thinning but too much and you will need several layers. Tybrus
Took a primed black mini and used the new Base yellow (Ill fix it with name later) Two coats it covered the black primer 100%, 3 thinned layers of the new (Imperial Fist Yellow) and got a nice crisp yellow No problems at all with the back prime. Now I have been painting fist for years, and never been able to get a nice crisp yellow with a black prime without days of work. I will say the new Fist yellow, is a bit to Canary yellow for me. I preferred the golden yellow, and so have stocked up. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250332-the-new-paints/#findComment-3036808 Share on other sites
ThisisJimmy
Figured I'd add my experience with the few new paints I have. Painting Word Bearers, I needed good, deep reds. Using the conversion chart was a bad idea. Mephiston Red is nowhere as pastel as Mechrite Red, but as a base colour that gets washed, its not a huge issue. Wazzdakka Red, the supposed equivalent for Red Gore, is way brighter than RG, which is a bit of a deal breaker. The metallics seem really strong which isn't a bad thing, and the washes seem to work as before which is just dandy. vtec407
To me the Ceramite White ended up being too chaulky. I applied 3 coats on the shoulder pad of my long fangs sergeant and it ended up looking too thick. I'm assuming thinning it down a bit might help. As far as Imperial Primer goes, it goes on with a matte finish. Definitely better than using Chaos Black out of the pot for priming which gives off a slight sheen effect. BorisBC
Carroburg Crimson shades fantastically - just did some BA termies, and it was so damn easy - much much better than Devlan Mud! WingsOfTheFalcon
Layer - Flash Gitz Yellow: I bought this as my old Bad Moon Yellow (BMY) was drying up, and was quite pleasantly surprised. My one complaint would be that the colour isn't really an exact match, it's more of a warm yellow, whereas BMY was more of an acid yellow. That said the coverage of FGY is superb by comparison, it will probably take half the number of layers that BMY did to produce a nice bold yellow. As an Imperial Fists painter, this is a very good paint (if not a 'must-have') to keep in your arsenal!
