Nuclear Fridge
I would have the Rune Priest advising the Wolf Lord feeling troubled -- after some of his rune-castings come up with reversed icons. What might it mean? But of course, having some fanatical Inquisition nut-case crash the party is sure to stir the plot! BLACK BLΠFLY
The Valkyrie had discovered a place to hide within the confines of the black ship and intermittently her chain of runes and wards would flicker indicating the enemy was probing the area via the use of trained psykers. "They cannot find me unless I want them to do so." she thought to herself and inwardly smiled. She also sensed a few others much like herself somewhere inside. Maybe they had come with the one so close to death that had stumbled into her cave high on top of the peak. She must find them and soon. BLACK BLΠFLY
... Large patrols of retrained guardsmen dressed in brown fatigues marched through every corridor of the black ship searching for the elusive quarry. Many of the patrols included snarling cyber Mastifs short chained at the neck. The dumb beasts sniffed at the ground and barked as they pawed against their tight leashes. Large hulking combat servitors with all manner of cruel melee weapons drifted about as well. Inquisitor Grimm personally lead his kill team of hand picked veterans as they combed through one lonely ship sector. "The witch has proven herself to be very good at hiding." said Captain Krell to Grimm. "We have covered every inch of the ship but have not found even a single hair. I am beginning to doubt she is actually onboard." "Don't be such a fool." sneered the Inquisitor. "The eldritch hag is waiting for us to give up the search and relax... Then she will strike. You saw the vidded footage of her boarding the ship." "It was a very brief clip and a bit scrambled at the end. As I remember it the entire ship's population was suffering from mass hysteria at the time due to the battle on the mountain peak. We lost almost half our soldiers in that engagement." Krell's upper lip curled into a frown. "Personally I don't think brute force is the answer." Grimm laughed sourly then spoke into the microbead cuffed inside his high stiff black collar. "All hands this is a level red omega alert. Continue to search for the witch! Cover every shadow... Look in every crack... Continue the search! Push harder!" Grimm laughed again as he slicked back his short cropped blonde hair. A long dueling scar ran down the full length of his jutting nose seeming to split his face in half like a deep dark crack. The wound was deep and twisted, taken from a fellow adept during his lengthy training period in the Ordo Hereticus back in the early days of his long career. Grimm had ended the duel strangling the adept to death with his bare hands. A seemingly innocuous argument in regards to the virtues of a puritanical stance had been the spark that lit the flame and it had burned hard. Grimm wore the scar like a badge. Only a very few of his Ordo were given complete command of a black ship. Grimm lived only to eradicate the most unclean heretics. Now he was on the verge of what he viewed as the ultimate kill. The Inquisitor burned with his desire. The Valkyrie had only been partially glimpsed while boarding the ship but the evidence was there plain as day. "We brought this army to apply brute force." the Inquisitor said calmly to Krell. "We must keep applying the pressure. My methods have never failed... Not once." Captain Krell kept silent for a moment. There was no use arguing with Grimm now. The Inquisitor was well known for being quite stubborn and rarely ever conceded even on the smallest most meaningless point. "Well then Inquisitor maybe we should take time to brief ourselves on new measures we can introduce and review the results of our search so far for this heretic. I don't think a short respite will slow the overall process." Grimm stopped still halting in mid stride. "Go ahead Captain. Take the kill team back to the command center and do as you wish. I will continue on for now without your help." "Are you sure that's alright?" Krell asked as he and his veterans also paused. "Go now." said Grimm. "I want some positive results. That's why you and your men are here after all." ... The vast and numerous shifts of patrols continued to pour through the ship's corridors like a seething army of black ants searching through every room and chamber over and over again. The sound of their tattooing boot heels crashed against the hard floors. One squad on patrol thought they had finally spotted the intruder and fired their lasguns into the shadows. A combat servitor emerged from the darkness counter attacking in complete surprise and self defense. Reports of the fighting spread quickly like wild fire through the ship. BLACK BLΠFLY
... Kayla took a sip from his canteen then finish his story. "I've had this dream while I was sleeping in the cave. There were two worlds colliding against each other. I could see the oceans flooding the land and mountains topple. I heard people screaming in pain and solar winds blowing out from the horizon. A white wolf stalked the land feasting on the dead. Black ravens circled above blotting out the sun." Ronin looked up as he tugged upon the handles of his long mustache. "I think you have been touched by the warrior. Your dream is an answer to this madness, if only we can unravel its clues." "We have our orders." said Ahab as he bit into a biscuit mopping up the gravy in his pan. "Find the warrior and re establish contact with our clan." The Wolf Scout swallowed the last bit of his meal and wiped his mouth with the back of his huge gloved hand. His head was fully shaven and covered with raised ritual tattooes. Ahab's skin was dark unlike the other two. He stored away his vitals then pulled out his combi bolter, pulling back the long clip. A solid round entered the chamber with a thud. His fangs gleamed in the darkness as he licked his lips clean. "Yes I agree the dream is important but who are we to question the intent? Let's be on with it now." Ronin looked at the Wolf Scout and lowered his eyes. "Don't be headstrong so brother. We are safe here for the moment and it appears the enemy is unbeknownst to our location. There is no hurry yet." BLACK BLΠFLY
... Grimm sniffed at the confined air as he made his way towards the wounded servitor. The smell of fresh pine needles filled his nostrils and the immediate atmosphere felt much cooler. "Something isn't right." he thought to himself as he turned the servitor about looking for clues. His dark eyes gleamed as they caught sight of a small hand axe imbedded in the back of the servitor. Grimm took a hold of the short handle carefully working the hooked blade loose from the tight back muscles. The axe head was polished and glinted as he flicked it back and forth. Small runes stood out upon the edges embossed into the sharp metal. "This is a weapon of the enemy." he thought to himself. The Inquistor held the blade close to his nose and sniffed again. "The axe is ensorcled." Grimm declared out loud to the huge party of soldiers surrounding him. Deftly he dropped the axe inside a pocket on the skirt of his long black frock coat. "I can feel the witch close by now. Tear down the walls!" BLACK BLΠFLY
Another combat servitor armed with four sets of chained buzz saws quickly cut through the bulkhead as soldiers milled around beside him to hold up the loose sections. The Inquisitor stood back and watched intently as a pair of guardsmen both armed with plasmaguns stood on either side. A non commissioned officer held a Mastif by its leash as the beast howled. The servitor then reared back and let the huge section of paneled wall fall. Behind the bulkhead they saw twisting round pipes and conduit traversing about in the darkness. "What is that?" said the NCO pointing with his free hand at a small metallic disk attached to one of the outer conduits. "Oh feth!" shouted Grimm as he dropped down behind the two guardsmen escorting him. The frag grenade exploded showering the nearby soldiers in a storm of burning shrapnel. Some of the guardsmen screamed in pain as the flying bits of metal shard tore through them. "Stay calm!" shouted Grimm as he stood back following the explosion. "We will be needing more medics. Tend to the wounded." Other soldiers immediately began to attend to the wounded while the huge Mastif continued to bark. The Inquisitor slowly returned to the spot where the grenade had exploded. He wondered how the witch had managed to set the small bomb behind the bulkhead. "I think I've got it now." he said into his commbead opening a direct link to Krell. "We have just been attacked by an enemy fragmentation device set to explode on close proximity. I believe the bomb served as a warning for her. We must be very close to her location now." Grimm switched off the link and spoke to his assembly. "I want this entire sector sealed off at all points... No one gets inside and no one gets out. Now bring the holographic showing this area of the ship." BLACK BLΠFLY
... Krell and his team remained inside the command center pouring over all available data. They had sifted through the information but were stumped. There was no evidence of any intruders within the black ship. The sensors had thoroughly swept through every possible location, including those uninhabitable... There was nothing new to be had. Krell felt his frustration rising as he tugged at a gold braid attached to an epaluate on one of his black sleeves. "I've noticed a very slight fluctuation within the chamber that houses our psychic choir." said Sergeant Stone. "The temperature inside the chamber has been slowly dropping over the past few hours and coincides with the start of the altercation in sector IX. It is nothing abnormal but the coincidence made it stick out." "Interesting." replied Captain Krell. "I don't think it warrants our leaving here to investigate but we can send another team to go and take a closer look." The Captain opened a channel on the comm link ordering another team of veterans to investigate. Krell and his men were professionally known as the Black Specters and had served under the Ordo Hereticus for the past two decades. They specialized in desperate searches such as the one currently underway and had bagged more than their fair share of finds, most of which had lead to the kill as well. Krell found Inquisitor Grimm hard to work with and was glad to have the time alone with his kill team. He had been asked to join Grimm in this search by another Inquisitor whom highly recommended the Black Specters. The witch's presence had been detected by the emergence of an eerie psychic signature that aligned with the last of the destruction left in the wake of the tendril from Hive Fleet Gorgon that had devastated the planet below. Long ago it was rumored the planet had been a maiden world of the eldar Exodites... There was no telling how long the heretic had lived on the planet or how she had come to reside there. Supposedly there were still many Tyranid organisms left on the planet surface. Krell imagined that the witch was very powerful to have survived all that time in a nest of deadly xenos. Grimm kept his cards to close to his vest not offering much in the way of any useful information regarding the origins of the witch. All Krell really knew he had learned during his original debriefing by the other Inquisitor. The presence of the Space Wolf battle cruiser was a big concern for Krell but Grimm had told him not to worry. The special shields built into the black ships could avoid all means of detection, even at relatively close range. The cruiser was still in orbit but their paths had not crossed though they had come quite close when the black ship descended upon the giant mountain peak. It was in fact the tallest mountain on the planet which had allowed them to come so close. The summit was so high as to mean certain death for any man to spend much time there. They had been issued special gear to survive the deadly heights and even then they couldn't spend much time exposed. Krell looked to the viewer showing the battle cruiser. The giant spacecraft loomed large in the vidscreen and appeared to be on an early intercept course. BLACK BLΠFLY
... Grimm's contingent had removed almost all of the walls and paneling within Sector IX. They worked much carefully than before due to the booby trap. No one had died as a result of the bomb and the injured were all evacuated just prior to sealing off the sector. Grimm carefully inspected each exposed section from top to bottom. Nothing more had been found. There was one last bulkhead remaining and the combat servitor was cutting through the last bit. Several gun servitors flanked along either side with their weapons all trained upon the opening as teams of guardsmen slowly lowered the heavy panels to the floor. Again Grimm detected the faint scent of fresh pine needles. The Inquisitor moved forward behind another pair of bodyguard also armed with plasmaguns. Grimm held a large master crafted plasma pistol in one hand and had drawn his force sword in the other. The Inquisitor mentally ignited the blade as they drew up to the final chasm. The scent of pine needle grew stronger and the Mastif began to bark wildly as the NCO struggled to keep the beast on its short leash. Something moved within the darkness. A tall lithe Space Marine clad in dull grey armor stepped from the opening with both gauntlets held out open. "So you have finally found me." said the Marine. "I come in peace and only acted in my own defense down upon the frozen peak. I come from another world altogether different than your own but they are also much alike in many ways. I bring an important message you must hear. It is a warning you must know." The Marine's voice was soft but there was a hard edge underlying the lilted tone. The Marine then seemed to vanish and was immediately reconstructed. "So you have finally found me." she said again as she repeated the original message. "It's a hologram!" shouted Grimm as he stepped into the dark opening pulling loose a holographic projector wedged between a pair of pipes. "Inquisitor!" came the voice of Captain Krell over the intercomm. "I have spotted one of our Aquila Landers headed on a direct course towards the Space Wolf battle cruiser." "Be damned!" said Grimm in anger. "Override it's controls and turn it around immediately! Is it still within the cloaking range of the ship? How did this happen and why didn't you spot this sooner?" Unbridled rage spilled in his words as he fought to maintain control of his emotions. "Krell, you'll answer for this!" BLACK BLΠFLY
Krell worked with the command crew in a hurried attempt to take remote control of the Aquila Lander. Each attempt was jammed as they tried every various means available. The tiny spacecraft was slowly approaching the boundary at which point it would evade the cloaked region hiding the black ship from the battle cruiser. Krell watched in silent frustration as warning runes continued to illuminate upon the control panel. A warning klaxon then sounded marking the escape of the Aquila Lander. Surely the Space Wolves would discover its presence within the next few moments. "Prepare for engagement." said Krell to the crew. He looked back at the rest of the Black Spectres and shook his head. "This is not good." Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250486-saga-of-the-white-wyrm/page/3/#findComment-3074837 Share on other sites

BLACK BLΠFLY
... A pair of blast doors slowly yawned open as the battle cruiser gave entry to the Aquila Lander. Many Space Wolves lined either side of the boarding decks pushing against each to see what the craft would yield. The sound of warning klaxons filled the air. The Iron Priest Bulvar frowned and held his gauntlets against his chest plate tightly gripping his thunderhammer. The hiss of trapped air released as the lander doors broke open pulling back free. The Valkyrie strode forth upon the shunt deck wearing her wolf helmet. Her white wolf trailed close behind her snipping at the Space Wolves. The beast was huge even by the standards of a Thunderwolf. BLACK BLΠFLY
The sound of intense explosions began to boom within the holding chamber resonating like raw thunder. The ground rocked as the warning klaxons rose in pitch. All eyes were trained upon the tall Valkyrie as she slowly stepped down the narrow walkway with her pale wolf by her side. Her artificed armor shone under the dimmed light glowing with subtle etheric energies pouring off her angelic form. Runes embellished upon the grey plate armor burned like embers in a fire. "We are under attack." said Bulvar as he listened to a hidden voice emanating from his comm bead. "An Inquistorial black ship has revealed itself suddenly upon your arrival." he said frostily to the Valkyrie as he stepped up to greet her. "I don't think it's a coincidence either." The Iron Priest lowered his thunderhammer and held out one open gauntlet in a sign of peace. "Identify yourself." The Valkyrie reached up unlatching her helmet and pulled it loose. Long blonde hair spun like golden strands flowed down from her bare head and her eyes blazed bright green like huge polished emeralds. Her skin was deeply bronzed from some ancient sun. The raw beauty of her face was breath taking and captivated her audience as she looked around. "I would rather die today right now than spend another day under the evil reign that has fallen over my home. I come here looking for warriors that will join my fight. You all see me before you, one of the very last of my kind for all I know. You and I." she said in a rousing voice. "We were cut from the same mold. I can see it plain as day as I look upon you all. You can feel it too, that I know in my heart." BLACK BLΠFLY
Bulvar bellowed with laughter then abruptly stopped. "I can't help but find some humor in this preposterous situation. We came here in search of a legend only to find a woman with the Inquisition hot on her tail." The Iron Priest heard the giant wolf growl and saw its long white fangs as it snarled. "We are a rather small expeditionary force. Our Lord is down below fighting Tyranids with his Wolf Guard and we seem to have lost some of our most veteran members. Our void shields have been raised but only a fool could believe that a battle cruiser is a match against a black ship. To openly fight the Inquisition is a declaration of war." The Valkyrie spoke out "Are you then afraid? They are villians simply put." She raised her arms sweeping them through the air. "Who wants to live forever? A coward will die one thousand deaths while a hero finds a glorious end. If you are not fit to lead your men then I say follow me! I shall lead you to glory, an epic to be told over and over again." The Valkyrie's voice was strong and filled the chamber blotting out the sound of explosions. Waves of raw power poured off her as she stepped through the crowd extolling them on to war. "Follow me!" "Aye!" shouted one Space Wolf raising his chainsword. "The sons of Russ do not back down to the likes of the Inquisition." Others then began to join in confirmation. Soon the chamber was full of the sound of battle cries as their blood stirred. "I think this is the way of a madness." said Bulvar. His voice was like a thin whisper against the crowd. "We must strike now!" shouted the Valkyrie. "We will take the fight to the enemy launching against them via boarding torpedoes. Take me to your launch bay!" she commanded. BLACK BLΠFLY
... Captain Krell watched as the long range blasts from the black ship's nova cannons imploded upon the battle cruister's void shields. Not much longer and they would collapse leaving the craft vulnerable. The battle cruiser had made a failed attempt to divert away to a further distance for safety but the superior speed of the black ship held its course keeping the enemy craft in their targeting solution. There would have to given a very good reason for the attack upon a Space Wolf vessel but the Inquisitorial mandate superseded most everything. Krell spent no time thinking about it now focused solely upon the imminent destruction of the battle cruiser. "Bring the ship about so we can hit them with a full broadside. That should do the trick." commanded Krell. Grimm was still engaged with his personal review of the psychic choir onboard the black ship. No news was forthcoming and it seemed the Inquistor had been gone longer than he would have thought in these circumstances. Krell had been given full responsibility for directing the attack and relished the task. The black ship was quickly turning about.
