I'm making my own chapter of Space Marines, this fella is my first attempt.

I've never tried line highlighting before - based on my attempt above, can anyone give me any advice?

I'm also looking for suggestions as to the colour scheme of the weapons, I'm thinking grey and yellow, but I don't know if that will blend in with the Marine too much...

Also looking for ideas for iconography and names.

I've not decided who the parent chapter is yet, was toying with the ultra's but having read the codex, I'm swinging towards the 'Fists or 'Ravens. Any thoughts?

Cheers for taking the time to read this, hope you can help ;)

*edit* Sorry for crap photography

I think you're pretty good for a first try but I think some parts are better than others.

For starters, here's a good little read if you've not already seen it:

I'll add that I think the highlighting of the lighter shade armour is good, my niggle is that you've used the same shade to highlight the darker areas of armour too. IMHO you'd be better off with a darker shade to highlight those areas with, just one step up from the base colour (I think you've actually done this then highlighted the highlight with white?), that way the highlights will remain subtle.

So if light grey is highlighted with white the dark grey I would highlight with a mid-tone grey; it doesn't need highlighting as brightly. I hope that makes sense?

As for the weapons and badge...not too sure, I'd avoid yellow guns though incase they all end up looking like they're armed with Nerf/super-soakers! You could maybe use a metallic grey (mix grey/black with boltgun metal) to save them being too silver and keep it tonal without everything being grey. Have a play around with it and look up other grey marine pictures and check out what works for them.

Hope all that waffle helps a bit!

Yeah you're right, for the darker grey armour I used a lighter grey and then white. I think you're right that, that is the weakest part - I'll do those bits again in a darker grey, possibly slightly darker than the orginal highlight grey too...

Nerf gun armed Marines ftw :)

I've only ever seen those on Orks before, do you have any picture examples of SM with hazard striped weapons?
It might be heresy. Nearly every Iron Warrior has them, even the chaos land raider on the GW website. I'm not so sure if there are loyalists with hazard stripes though.
How about now?

Again, sorry about bad photography, the flash shows the dark grey bits nicely though :)

The shin piece here looks better, if you copy that onto the edge round the mouth grill and the small collar part I think you're onto a winner.

You're doing a well just starting out, Some more practice working with thinner paints, getting smooth highlight transitions, and learning where the light hits to place the highlight and you should be set. Once it all clicks for you you'll be amazed how you couldn't do it before. Keep up the good work!

For the weapons I'd say either a contrasting color used sparingly like a dark red or blue, or neutral color like black or really light grey would be the way to go. Hazard stripes may be a bit to busy and detract from your scheme, the weapons should accent the whole mini not draw your eye away from the guy holding it to the wepon its self.

OK, I think he's coming along nicely now, thanks for everyone's advice regarding the colour scheme and line highlighting.

Would you be so good as to take a glance at him now and let me know how you think I can improve him?

Furthermore, for the shoulder insignia, which do you think would work better?
