Timing of outflanking versus combat squads.

By now we all know that a Space Marine unit can break into combat squads on arrival from reserves. However, how does this apply to units of Scouts (or some other Outflankable unit that can break into combat squads)?

You have a full 10-man Scout unit, and place it into Reserves. You declare that it will arrive via Outflanking. When the Scouts arrive from reserve (say, on Turn 3 by rolling a 3+) you decide to combat squad them into two 5-man teams.

Is the roll for the arrival board edge done BEFORE the breakup, or AFTER? Before means each combat squad must arrive from the same board edge, but they can do so from different points on said edge. After means each combat squad is rolled for individually, and they may end up arriving from completely different board edges.

My stance is that you roll for the entire Scout unit to arrive from reserves, and therefore roll for the entire unit when determining board edge. You then break down the unit into two smaller units, pick a point of arrival, and walk on.

Opposing stance says that since each combat squad is a "unit," they must be rolled for separately. After determining each combat squad's board edge, pick a point of arrival, and walk on.

Which is it?

ORGANISING A BATTLE

1 Agree points limit & choose forces

2 Prepare the Battlefield

3 Select a Mission

4 Deploy Forces

5 Start the game!

INFILTRATORS AND SCOUTS

In all three types of deployment, the sequence is the same. First the players deploy their forces (apart from any unit left in reserve or that chose to use their 'infiltrate' special rule). Then they deploy their infiltrators (as described on page 75), and finally they move units with the 'scouts' special rule (see page 76).

Preparing reserves

When deploying their army. players may choose not to deploy one or more of the units in their army and instead leave them in reserve. Units in reserve will become available in later turns of the game.

Rolling for reserves

At the start of each of his Movement phases except the first, before moving any unit, the player must roll a dice for each of his units in reserve. Depending on the turn in question, a certain result will mean that the unit has arrived.

Once all of the units have been rolled for, the player picks any one of the units arriving and deploys it, moving it onto the table as described later.

Outflank

During deployment, players may declare that Units with the 'scout' or 'infiltrate' special rules are attempting to outflank the enemy. This means they are making a wide sweeping move to come at the foe from an unexpected direction. When an outflanking unit arrives from reserve the controlling player rolls a dice:

COMBAT SQUADS

The decision to split the unit into combat squads, as well as which models go into each combat squad, must be made when the unit is deployed. Both combat squads can be deployed in separate locations.

The order of operations is this :

- Organize the battle

- Deploy your forces

- During Deployment, specify that the scout squad is being held in reserve and will deploy using Outflank.

- Roll for reserves during the Movement phase

- When the Scout squad becomes available on a successful die roll they are arriving

- While the Scout squad is arriving, but before it is deployed, you roll the die to see which table edge the Scout squad is arriving from.

- Next you deploy the arriving scout squad. When the Scout squad is deployed it is split into two five man Combat squads, each of which may deploy in a seperate location - moving on from the single table edge rolled for earlier.

I remember seeing this in a FAQ, but I do not remember which one.

It is all one unit until it is actually deployed on the table. You can not deploy half the unit. The whole unit hits the table at the same time and then splits into combat squads at that time. You make your reserve roll as one unit, you make your outflank roll as one unit and the you deploy them. It is not until they actually deploy that they split into combat squads; that means they share the same table edge. Even if you get to pick either side, you still have to pick a side before deployment so they both come in on the same edge.

Yeah. What he said :(
