Circus Nurgling
Hey all. Thought I'd consolidate my forces, since all of them are basically from the Vraks campaign anyhow... Apostles of Contagion. Here's my WIP army for the Nurgle worshiping Vraks renegades, consisting of Daemons, CSM and a sprinking of traitor guard mechanized units. I built them a while back, and took a break from the hobby, but I've made a significant amount of progress the last few weeks so I figured I'd post before, during, and after shots. http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/025-1.jpg Chaos Sorceror http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/024.jpg Daemon Prince http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/022.jpg Chosen Squad Alpha http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/011-2.jpg Chosen Squad Omega http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/021.jpg PM Squad Invictus http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/020.jpg PM Squad Xenos http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/019.jpg PM Squad Exterminatus http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/018.jpg Renegade Leman Russ Demolisher http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/017.jpg Renegade Leman Russ http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/004-7.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/009-2.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/010-2.jpg Plaguebearers http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/012-1.jpg Some Proxy Beasts of Nurgle http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/013-2.jpg Plague Ogryns http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/036-1.jpg Herald and Epidemius http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/001-4.jpg Termies and Dreadnought (I have the other FW one as well, built and based) http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/001-5.jpg Some swamp terrain http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/015.jpg Big Daddy Hope to have it all ready to prime in the next 2 weeks. Hopefully that's not too ambitious. Also, the painted marines are getting a makeover, now that I have a better idea of what I want to do. The painted plaguebearer is the prototype paint job for the rest of them, as well as for the Great Unclean One. The depressions in the bases will be filled with Envirotex Lite, for some good swamp effect. I have 3 rhinos, an OOP mk 1 predator (the one with the plastic round turret) and a mk 1 Land Raider that are in the early stages of building, as well as some scratchbuilt Blight Drones, Blight Flies (proxied screamers of tzeentch modeled as 'wild-type' blight drones, aka no armor, guns and the like; still have their wings), and an aftermarket daemon or 3. As far as gameplay goes, my playgroup lets me proxy in stuff or play straight from the IA books, since I play with a themed, non-competitive list, but it basically breaks down into a little over 2k worth of CSM and a little over 1500 daemons for regular games. Son of Carnelian
That's way more metal and resin than I would ever be comfortable with, but it seems like you have a great handle on it. I'll watch this space! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250721-apostles-of-contagion/#findComment-3039034 Share on other sites
Lachdannan
I'm keeping an eye on this. Love the mix of old and new kits, but they fit well together for the theme. Awesome stuff. Circus Nurgling
@muskie soon very soon. I just got done priming about 40% of my force, so I'm letting that cure overnight and some painting fun will begin tomorrow. I'm doing some test runs of color combinations on 3x5 cards now... @ Brother and Marshall thanks! I'll try not to disappoint. In the mean time, here's a Lord with Daemon weapon I've started converting last night and this morning. It's a pain to work with metal, but it's a good feeling to get something that heavy on the table, I dunno why. There will be some tabards hanging from his front, extending to a torn cape off the back; his left fist will be clenching a wad of chains which hold a couple of skulls and plague-infected censers. I have some specific skulls I'll be using, which are on their way in the mail. On the base, a plague-zombie rises from a pool of stagnant swamp-water (reminiscent of my other basing techniques), at least that's the idea floating in my head. Obviously early stages, but hey... Test fit http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/077-1.jpg Still missing a finger, but look at all that cable-y goodness going into his neck and head! http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/080.jpg The shaft of the Reaper will be resting on a rock or some other basing material http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/081.jpg Oh yeah, I also got a Baneblade this weekend! Woot! It was in pieces when I got it, and was missing some tread, and the back roadwheel, but I got it in trade for a good deal so I'm not complaining. Still kickin' it around in my head, so I haven't done anything but repair it back to 1 piece so far... Biohazard
The lord is looking good. The old Termi Champ head looks great on the Typhus body. And kudos on working with metal I find it too frustrating to do anything with. Circus Nurgling
Alrighty, I got some painting done. First thing I've painted in 2 years. I still have the highlights and detailing left to do, so this is a WIP still, but they're mostly done. I still have another dozen or so to paint, so I'm going to do the detailing to all of the Plaguebearers at once, since they basically have the same details to flesh out. http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/003-11.jpg I thought the gore was a bit fresh, but I still have many more to paint, so they'll get varying degrees of rot I suspect. Before I forget: Primed Tamiya white, Base Hormagaunt purple, Blend of 1:1 Reaper Pure White & Ashen Blue, Blend Rotting Flesh, Blend Bone White, Wash Devlan Mud; Blood is a mix of Devlan Mud and Blood Red, wash Devlan Mud; Horns, Bones & Maggots are Graveyard Earth, Blend Bone White to varying degrees (unfinished); Metal Bits are Tin Bitz. I can't find mah dang notes for my test plaguebearer (see first post) so I'm pretty sad about that. I really like the way it turned out and I'm not sure what exactly I did there... I know I wrote it down somewhere... Anyway thanks for the compliments! Circus Nurgling
Thank you. I'd have to agree, though there are aspects of the test-model that I like more, overall these work somewhat better. I'm debating on just painting the rest of them this color, or continue on with the plan and painting some in different color schemes. These were to be studies for a paint-scheme for my Great Unclean One, which is in the process of being based on an old CD. I tried to get a close-up of each individual, but my macro on my new camera doesn't like me at all. I'll have to look into how to rig up a mini photo-booth to take some more shots once more painting gets done, which will most likely be tomorrow. Do you think a Plague Ogryn would look good in this scheme? Lachdannan
I think it would. You have achieved a nice palid sickly greenish/greyish hue with them that turns the stomach the more I look at them! Circus Nurgling
Hey thanks guys. Made some progress yesterday and today, and sort of committed to a paint scheme now, finally. Here is my squad of Rogue Trader era Nurgle fanatics, sans rust/corrosion of the metal (which will add quite a bit of color), highlighting, and fine detailing like eyes and such. http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/001-7.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/002-9.jpg Used the same technique as with the plaguebearers, adding a step of blending between each color by mixing an intermediate 1:1 of the previous color and the next. Tin bitz trim will be oxidized using some mix of scaly green/DA green/hawk turquoise for a bronze rust effect, and I'm not quite sure which direction I'm going with the boltgun metal yet. Whether I want to do true 'Apostles of Contagion' and blend in some brass and rust there, or just go with rust, I don't know. When I got these guys they were mint/unpainted, and I wanted to do them justice. While I'm not quite finished with them, I'm pretty happy with them and think they turned out well. [edit: personal note]Boltgun metal, Tin Bitz, Devlan Mud wash Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250721-apostles-of-contagion/#findComment-3044733 Share on other sites
Circus Nurgling
Here is the general idea for the rest of my marines... still not sure which direction to go for the silver part of the armor... highlight and rust, or bring it up to brass and rust as the Apostles of Contagion fluff suggests. Still need to do touch-up work on these, but any suggestions, criticisms, or direction would be greatly appreciated. They're taking forever to blend and stipple this mix onto the armor... http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/002-10.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250721-apostles-of-contagion/#findComment-3045484 Share on other sites

Circus Nurgling
Thanks! I have a love-hate relationship with a lot of the older stuff. Things like the old Land Raider, and obviously the Nurgle Renegades, are much to my liking. Others, like the square-foot marines, not so much. I'd like to get some thoughts and opinions on something, before I glue. I have this nice chunk of resin sitting here, with a base ready to go, but I'm indecisive about the horns. I've always really liked this cover art (speaking of old stuff) http://images.wikia.com/warhammerfb/images/f/f4/Nurgle.jpg ...and was looking to pay homage to it a bit with my Great Unclean One, whilst simultaneously making use of all the materials that came with the kit. The center horn would obviously be filled in, filed down, and otherwise smoothed over, and the horns are just tacked on, but it's the general idea: http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/001-8.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/002-11.jpg Thoughts? Lachdannan
Love those old plague marines. Does indeed tempt me to pick some up. Such great models, and I love the scheme you have fro them. As for the old Lost and the Damned artwork, just awesome, and I love how you are trying to recreate it. Think you are on the right track with filing the central horn. Could even put some nurglings on him as well, like the picture. sigh..must resist the call of nurgle... Biohazard
I really like where the GuO is going. I love that model, I have the old metal ine and its tiny! As Brother Syth suggested I like the idea of the Nurglings. I would have them on the base though, I don't think they would look good actually on him. Excellent job with the horns though. I agree with filing the central horn down. I'd also look at the Beastman sprues to see if there are any horns that could replicate the really small ones in the artwork. Circus Nurgling
@Marshall it's from the old 1990 release of the Realm of Chaos book, which I feel privileged to own a copy of. I actually have an original piece of art of one of the nurglings used in that book, by Tony Ackland. FYI forgeworld's Apostate Preacher of Nurgle (the one with the funny hat) is based off of artwork in that book, as well as the daemon of the plague hulk, as well as several other older minis. I'll be basing some of my banner artwork off of references in that book as well. @Brother Syth Resistance is futile... oh wait wrong universe. I'm going to try my hand at sculpting some nurglings, and if they turn out good enough to where they don't detract from the model I may throw one or two on as you suggest (and I hadn't thought of that, so thanks!). @Biohazard that's a thought, but they probably won't be detailed enough to mesh with the fine work that FW has put into this model. I'll take a look at them none-the-less, but I'm not trying to replicate the artwork so much as pay homage to it. There are elements, such as the 'inner mouth', that I simply don't feel fit in with the scheme of things any more, and really isn't a way to modernize without being cheesy (at least not at my skill level). Anyhow, I took the plunge, so there's no turning back now. I took an exacto blade and a file, as well as some dental tools, to his forehead, and a drill around his skull (those horns are pinned in and glued). Here he is, and I'll be working on him until he's ready to prime this week. Then it's back to painting plaguebearers and other organic Nurgle things until I feel competent enough with a solid paint scheme to do him justice. http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/003-12.jpg Thanks for your encouragement and suggestions. Circus Nurgling
Thanks bud. It's actually ready to prime now. I'm going to try a few more techniques on some plaguebearers and some other fleshy, rotty things, before I get to painting this thing, so it's getting primed and shelved as soon as the epoxy putty and glue cures. The base is bit boring now, but as soon as some water effects and grass clumps get in there it will look better. There was such a big gap in his hand I really had to do some sculpting to get in to blend together. Other than that everything is ready to go. I'll be painting the tongue separately. Oh and Biohazard, I had a look at some beastman bits. There's some good stuff in there, and as soon as my supplier gets a restock, I'll definitely be plundering. Nothing took inspiration's grasp for this particular model, though. Thanks! http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/001-9.jpg Those little nurglings have drums, bagpipes, and a war horn, in case anyone wanted to know. They're from Mordheim, and were pretty hard to track down. I've been saving them for something special, and I think this is it. Circus Nurgling
Ok quick update. Here's a squad of Plague Ogryns and several bases of Nurglings for when Kugath poops them out. Bases will be filled in with Envirotex Lite for water effects, and will be accented with some clumps of long static grass. They all need detail work, and some highlights here and there, but I'm done for the day and haven't updated in a bit, so here you go. http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/009-3.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/010-3.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/007-2.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/005-6.jpg http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac197/gfan360/011-3.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250721-apostles-of-contagion/#findComment-3052493 Share on other sites
