sombreromaster
Hey Everybody, New to table top gaming but have always had an interest. Seeing that my friend had begun to assemble a force sort of gave me the push i needed. This forum seemed the proper one to join as i am planning on constucting a chaos marine force. Oh, and if anyone knows of a site or forum dedicated to newbies, thats be great. Video games are becoming stale, i've always loved magic the gathering and its extremely inviting atmosphere, and friendly/fun games and non technological dependance. I feel warhammer shares these traits. I'm also a sculptor by trade, so the aspect of assembling and painting seems to seal deal. The real question here is though, everyone seems to keep saying on everything i've read get the blackreach starter set. Now, im not completely opposed to that in order to learn the game mechanics on a smaller investment anf scale, but don't really want to play as either of the provided races. I am also eager to paint, but i dont know if resale would be better painted or left unpainted. So basically should i start with that or just get the rule book codex, and maybe just a basic marine force to paint for the time being while i study up? Thanks A Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250785-hey-new-to-40k-and-the-forum/ Share on other sites
Olis
Hail and welcome to B&C, brother! This forum seemed the proper one to join as i am planning on constucting a chaos marine force. Oh, and if anyone knows of a site or forum dedicated to newbies, thats be great. As far as I'm concerned, you couldn't have picked a better forum to start with, dude. The folks here are real friendly (most of the time) and they are pretty knowledgeable, to boot. ;) The real question here is though, everyone seems to keep saying on everything i've read get the blackreach starter set. The thing with the Black Reach starter set is that it is an introductory set to the rules and two of the most popular races. If you've set your sights on Chaos Space Marines already, it's a waste of cash to bother getting the set, imho. Just find yourself an A5 (page size) rulebook on Ebay for the necessary rules, if you fancy having a go at gaming (and a squad of Chaos Marines). If you like the look of things (or feel like jumping in with both feet) you could try to pick up the current codex off of Ebay, too. As for resale, if you need to do it, it entirely depends upon the quality of the paintjob. Anything less than top notch and it'd be better to strip unwanted models before selling them. People tend to prefer going for models that are bare more so than models with an okay paintjob on 'em. Anyhoo, like I said, welcome brother and if you have any questions, just ask. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250785-hey-new-to-40k-and-the-forum/#findComment-3039709 Share on other sites
sombreromaster
Thanks for the hospitality! So, your response was pretty much what i wanted to hear, start a chaos force. I mean, i could do space marines, but chaos just look so badass i just cant resist, and if im gonna be painting them and speninf all that time might as well be my favorite looking ones. But i've still got some questions, When you say page size do you mean try and find the pocket sized book used, or the full size hardcover. Wouldn't mind having that for the painting tips unless they are not applicable to the chaos force, as well as all the background information. And as far as starting a force what would be the minimum to play? I'm assuming i need more than just one squad of marines? If so what would be a good addition to have enough To begin playing games? Kind of worried about finding people willing to play small quicker games with me to show me the ropes. thanks again! Olis
No problem, brother. But i've still got some questions, When you say page size do you mean try and find the pocket sized book used, or the full size hardcover. Wouldn't mind having that for the painting tips unless they are not applicable to the chaos force, as well as all the background information. If you want to have info on the background and game scenarios too it's better to go for the bigger hardback version as it has far more to digest than the smaller A5 version you would normally find in the Black Reach set. As for painting tips, GW have just brought out a new guide for painting miniatures which might prove very useful (there is more information in this thread). Let's also not forget our own subforum dealing with problems and troubleshooting for painting. And as far as starting a force what would be the minimum to play? I'm assuming i need more than just one squad of marines? If so what would be a good addition to have enough To begin playing games? Kind of worried about finding people willing to play small quicker games with me to show me the ropes. Let's see... well, the standard army size for most new players to aim for is 1000 points, so that should be the goal for the mid-term, I think. Now, I'm very rusty when it comes to kitting out a Chaos army but we do have a decent Chaos subforum that could help you and a chaos army list subforum, too, to help you refine your army list (I advise visiting the latter to get an idea from other army lists of what you may want or need). :) As far as finding players for smaller, quicker games - I don't think you'll have much trouble, honestly (though I could be wrong), as low point games tend to be a relief for established players accustomed to larger, longer games. I've always considered small games as ideal territory to test out tactics, myself. :D Hope this helps.
