irwit
Hi all I'm looking for a new painting desk and hoping people can share their current setup. What I am looking for at the moment is an old Victorian roll top desk or equivalent. http://www.summitlakeantiques.com/Roll%20T...%2005%20002.jpg They have loads of storage and the roll top can protect everything from the cats and visitors. However I am struggling to find one that fits the bill and am wondering if there are any more modern equivalents out there people know of. Would also appreciate any advice of lighting as that would be the next port of call! Thanks all. Dorns Padawan
I just use my computer desk I got from B&Q. Not a lot of room admittedly but then again I do live in a studio flat. As for light, I purchased a tall lamp that has a second lamp on a bendy arm that I can aim at my desk that I got from IKEA. Depends on how much you want to spend mate to be honest. I just googled roll top desk & allsorts popped up. You can get them from £167 upwards of a grand. If you go to a hobby/model craft shop, you can pick up some lamps from them that you can clip onto the table or you could just go to Argos or somewhere like that to get a desk lamp. Again it depends on how much you are looking to spend. Hope that helps? irwit
Cheers for the quick reply. I should of really specified a budget and space really. I've got a good size office room and budget wise for the desk I'm thinking around 100~150 but would pay more for the right thing. Same goes for lighting. The thing I like about the roll top is just l the small draws and spaces. Perfect for our hobby I think. Dorns Padawan
They do look nice I agree, wish I had extra space as my desk is so small & cluttered. If you loook on eBay & search roll top desk & then go to lowest price first, you can see there are 4 or 5 desks in your price range if you are will to travel to pick them up? If not you are probably looking at a tad more the £150. As for lighting I am not overly sure but again, eBay if your friend. I just tried hobby lamps & there are 205 results found with prices starting at around £4.99 + p&p. You can more than likely get what you want for under £150 if you look around. Hope you find what you looking for matey. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3040216 Share on other sites

T14
If you have basic woodworking skills you could go the diy route. This took me a weekend to make :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3040279 Share on other sites

It's like Bob Villa and Gary Gygax sat around a lumber supply store and decided, 'Hey, you know what? I bet there's a market for the baddest-arse gaming tables in the known universe.' Ironfoe
Go check out Lifehacker.com , they have a amazing group of people that send in pictures of the desks they use and usually have guides on how to make them. I'm a huge advocate for making your own furniture, so I'm going to suggest that. Aqui
I don't want to come across as if I'm pimping the Company I work for (mentioned in a post above), but I have had a look at our Range and there aren't really anything like a desk with a roll top (except one which is had a closeable "lid", is fairly above the budget that you mentioned, and to my mind not really practical to paint etc from anyway...), but there are a lot of ways of getting a decent desk with storage for the budget you specify. There are also a fair few lamps that would be suitable to use as a decent light source as well. Again, I'm not trying to do anything underhand, I'm just here as a member of the forum trying to help out (I come here to get away from work not perpetuate it), so, if you do need any help give me a PM and I'll give you honest advice on anything you ask (I don't do hard sell - there's no point in it, insults customers intelligence and it's something I don't like when I'm in customer mode myself) I'll be totally honest though, if I could afford a desk like one in the links above, I'd rather get one of them myself :P Just had a thought. You might want to have a look around your local flea markets, car boot sales or Auction houses, as they might have a little bargain suitable for the purpose ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3040646 Share on other sites

Aqui
which company>? IKEA. Again, without it seeming like I'm promoting the company, at this time of year the company tends to sell off a lot of it's older ranges to accommodate newer ones (other time is usually around July/August). It might be possible to get something at a cheaper price due to this. The bargain corner/AS-IS department is another way of picking up cheaper stuff too. I do say again however, that there are many ways of getting a desk like the one you posted a link of above from flea markets etc. Hopefully there might be a place that sells such things at a reasonable price :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3040800 Share on other sites
irwit
Ah ok Yeah Ikea do some good stuff but I find a lot of it is just a desk, the reason I like the rolltop is all those small compartments and such, really suits the hobby I think with various bits box's, paints, brushes, tools, finished models etc. I was kind of hoping someone might point in the direction of a specilist or if there some "known" desk thats everyone is using that I didnt know about. Also shopping at Ikea has to be one of the most awful experiences someone could spend a day doing! No offence :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3040819 Share on other sites

I have had a look on the Internet for anything that might suit, and to be honest, there aren't many that fit in the budget range that you have in mind. I did have a look on the UK Ebay site, and there are some for £100 (with days left to go on the bidding. I'm not sure if they're suitable. Not sure what else to suggest to be honest :( Sorry :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3040839 Share on other sites
irwit
Cheers for all the help ^_^ The killer I am finding is not the price of the desk but delivery, its around the £150 mark depending on the distance, so I'm just gonna hold out and hope one comes up in my area. No point paying £150 delivery for £100 worth of desk. Ive found out you can set up auto emails from ebay for a specific search within a given area so have done that, so will just sit back and wait ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3041381 Share on other sites
NuclearMessiah
I recently just started drafting up plans to build my own. Figured the only way to get exactly what I want is to make it the way I want. travisb7
Ideal world I would love to do that and get it so it fits the room perefectly, however my woodwork skills are pretty poor! Do some internet searches or just ask around and see if you can find someone who does woodwork. We have a friend of the family who has done it all of his life, and anytime anyone needs something he'll do it for the cost of materials (just to have an excuse to get out of the house, i suppose). You might find someone who will help you for a VERY low cost. Draw up some basic plans for size, and see what you can find. Retired furniture builders are a life saver for this kind of thing. Stolid Fox
And if you have the skills and want to get more elaborate, you can borrow some ideas from here: LINKor even LINK. I have a Valet and a Vizier from Geek Chic (the Vizier is the other top end table along with the Sultan; the owner talked me into it when he heard I play boardgames which the Sultan is not good for). I love them but I'd be super-hesitant to use it as a painting table -- a bad paint spill could really destroy a beautiful piece of furniture. If you want to see the table though, my flickr has some pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/72053283@N07/6997407859/ Also to the topic, have you seen this series of videos? DIDM
go to a second hand store like goodwill and buy an old entertainment center, one from the 1990's-2000's, when people had big boxy tv's. you can mount lots of lights in the TV area, and then have loads of storage for all your other supplies as for lights I like SAD lighting it is expensive, but it gives you vitamins like the sun Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3041867 Share on other sites
irwit
SAD lighting??? As for the desk I will look into fidning a decent chippy but still see that costing a lot more. I do however want it looking good so old TV cabinets I dont think will cut it with the mrs, good idea tho :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250823-looking-for-a-new-desk/#findComment-3041948 Share on other sites
