Marshal WIP

I had an extra Grimaldus and crew lying around and finally decided to do something about it. I wanted to make a new marshal for my army (having sold the last two) but I wanted something suitably templarish. With a little effort, and still lots of stuff left to do, I came up with this:

It would be a marshal w/ Storm Shield and Power Weapon. I'm not sold on the spear though, and have a GK Termie sword that can replace the spear. I'm not 100% on the helmet either, and want to do some more work around the collar. I'm not sure about the skull kneepads, but think they are better as is then if I try to remove them.

Ideas, thoughts, comments?

Looks pretty good. I would try one of the heads from the upgrade sprue though instead of of the Sanguinary Guard(guessing?) head to make him more Templary.

The hand also is coming off at a weird angle, try trimming some plastic back so that it doesn't look like he has quite the elongated wrist after his manacle.

In the past I've used both TK shields and Bretonnian shields (linky1,linky2) and I like the way they look. Not completely convinced on the way it looks though currently, so thanks for the comments. Working on getting a head for him. Looking at the Conversion Lab: Knight's Heads (linky) or one of the GK PA heads or the one with the hood. Looks knightly enough. My FLGS owner has convinced me to start LoTR though, so this project is kinda back burner, but hopefully I will get around to updating sooner than later on it.

cheers.

What you did was really brave... I wouldn't remove Grimaldus' head and exchange it for... for... a normal, ordinary, featureless helmet! Not, that I'm afraid of killing a fictional BT hero, but "ruining" the model I crave for would just be wrong... Please change the head :)

Thanks for the comments guys. I am getting a replacement head for him. The one has already been chopped off. There is a GK player at my FLGS giving me a couple of the middle bottom heads in this picture :

As far as the shield goes, yeah the wood throws it off. I didn't want to use a brettonian shield because I'm running out of those, but I like the way it looks better and will prob do something like this:

I'm not sure I agree about the wrist looking too long. When you mentioned it, I looked and could see it, but it doesn't really bother me.

The back banner is to be able to distinguish him on the table top. I'm not a huge fan of them in excess, but I think one on the head dude isn't overkill.

  • 4 weeks later...

so an update. he has gone from potential marshal (well he could still be) but is looking more like an EC to me.

It's a shame I didn't see this thread earlier - I kinda liked the bog-standard head on Grim. Not everyone has to have a special head on them. Oh well. On a slightly different note, I'm not really feeling the new head. It might be the eye-patch or the 'tache, I don't know, but it just doesn't feel right to me.

Pretty neat conversion otherwise, though. :tu:

  • 1 month later...

So after some serious distractions (school, work, empire, infinity...) I got him finished. This is the final product (till I noticed some touching up that needs be done) - bad pictures, will try to take some more when I can get more time for better lighting etc.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts/opinions.

I use a 0000 brush when doing highlighting as I get the best control and width with this size.

Also use a magnifying glass to help me see better too.

I use 1 drybrush application of weathering powder from Tamiya (Gray) followed by varnish to seal and mute the weathering powder. Follow this by 3 shades of grey followed by a small point of white when highlighting.

Astronomicon Gray for the widest edge on the armour plates dragging it out the farthest on the raised edges.

Codex Gray for a slightly thinner edge on the armour plates dragging it less than the previous line

Fortress Gray for an even thinner edge on the armour plates and dragging even less than the previous line

Skull White for a point or 2 that might catch the light

This builds up the colour to the fine point of white in only a few spots where I feel the light would catch and give a sheen or a reflective point.

The rest of the lines are just the 3 grays to give depth or colour and contrast to the various armour plates/edges.

Have you considered trying some of the washes on the cloth to give it more depth followed by a very fine line or even a super light dry brush of the original colour to give even more depth?

The washes tend to collect in recesses and provide a better contrast of light/dark for the cloths giving a little more depth to the piece.

so its amazing (at least to me) what light can do. was able to take some better photos:

I might revisit the black though, with the comments made. Really some good stuff

Looks very nice with the new lighting. It makes the color contrast much smoother. The only thing missing is some scribling on the parchment (on the shield and "banners" especially). Your black is a bit on the grey side, but it's fine. If you want it darker, a wash seems like a simple solution.
