What do you think of this unit?

Picture this unit.

Logan

Arjac

Wolf Guard Battle Leader: Saga of the hunter, lightning claws. Runic Armor.

5x Long fangs: 4 Las cannons.

Drop pod.

It lands in cover turn one, and starts to blast the side armor of your transports, by turn two the Las cannons will be tank hunters and can even pose a real threat against land raiders. The unit, although expensive, demands that you direct even more points from your army to take it out. How would your army stand against this unit? What would you do to counter it?

Why have you posted this in the Inquisition forum?

In any case, my answer to this unit is simple: Exorcist + Melta Dominions in a Repressor. He'll never get to fire those lascannons. That death star is what, 6-700 points of "can't do anything on the turn it arrives"? Exorcist can kill the entire unit in 2 turns if it's lucky for a fifth of the unit price, and five TL meltaguns and a heavy flamer will kill anything, even before you get to the storm bolter and any bolters you might want to fire.

I posted it in the SW forum and in the SM forums as well, I wanted to see what different generals would think, and different army’s would do. I personally get mind locked when considering this unit. I would have to reserve my entire army and direckt all my firepower towards it when I came in from reserve. And emperor help me, I do not think 5 paladins could take this unit in cc.

5 Pallies, probably not. Too much ID.

But 5 GKT with Halberds would probably eat this unit, for a third of the cost. ;)

Add on a GKBC with 'nades for an easier victory.

DCA would run roughshod through this unit, if they could get Frags! ;)

I make every attempt to deploy with interlocking fields of fire, with "rapid reaction force" (Elites or FA) centrally located, so I'd accept whatever losses I take from their shooting as unfortunate, then concentrate ridiculous amounts of firepower. Anything left alive would get blocked by my disposable RRF, hopefully setting me up for a second round of concentrated fire if they manage to get through that. Turn 3 should be about my Troops getting on with their lives and engaging whatever you spent your leftover points on.

This coming down in the middle of the game would probably ruin my day completely, though.

EDIT: I feel it's worth mentioning that I've played against an army that used a similar setup to this squad on a few occasions. Arjac is my special Space Wolf nemesis...

A few thoughts,

The unit in question is Cheaper and better with Multi-meltas, than it is with lascannons. (I guess you could drop far away but then why bother with the pod at all.

As for how my Grey Knights would counter it, it depends on the rest of your list, the terrain, etc. to some extent.

Deploy Cotaez with 10 Purifiers to bubble Wrap my army.

If it is your only pod, and I get turn 1 pop-smoke on exposed vehicles so everything gets cover than cast shrouding so I get 3+ cover.

If you do drop away from me, try to use terrain to mitigate what you can shoot at.

If you drop close, assault with DCA, and even if I lose all of the lascannons will be gone, then just drive away. Especially if I just swing at the squad, then probably ARjac and the Long Fangs will bite it. I'll get killed by your ICs, but I just traded 75 points for 300 or so, ore if I actually swing one DCA at the battle leader.

It feels a little bit better that no one else seems scared of this unit, I think it is terrifying. If I managed to deliver 5 halberd terminators into assault range, and they managed get an assault of, they would probably manage to kill the long fangs and then get hacked to death by Logan and Arjac. So I just traded my Heavy hitters and troops, and probably whatever Stormraven or Land Raider that tried to get them there in one piece, for a long fang unit. 10 purifiers and grenades would probably be the better way to go. But still, assaulting through difficult terrain and into a unit with two IC’s, the outcome isn’t obvious. Perhaps a purgation squad using astral aim… Out of sight and bumping the cover save back up to 4+. But then again, the enemy isn’t stationary, they can run around as they please or catch a ride with a Land Raider.

I have my own "death star squad"

Belial LCs

Command Squad w/

standard bearer everyone gets extra attack

all LCs

Intergator chappy LCs

mounted in a crusader

all have extra attack all get reroll failed to hit from all get reroll failed to wound from LCs and the crusader punches alot of firepower right away

It usually tears alot up and if im not in a good position I load up for protection in the raider

seems to work pretty good for me

Id take em on ^_^ course Id try to soften em up a bit wth range first

So they're not Drop Podding right next to you?

Even better.

Just shoot the unit to death.
