The Best 40k Artwork

Over the years there have been some stunning examples of Space Marine related artwork, and 40k in general. One of my all time favourites is this:

Most of Mark Gibbons' artwork is brilliant, but this guy oozes Grimdark, and to me, is one of the best examples of a chaos marine, despite its age (It featured in the 2nd edition box Codex Imperialis book)

What are your favourite pieces of classic 40k artwork over the years? I'm thinking mainly official stuff, but as there is so much fan-made art that is excellent, feel free to post it :P Try and keep it power armour themed though, don't want the Inquistion to purge this thread ;)

Apologies if there is already a thread like this - i did search but no joy

By far one of the best.

Though the gates that stand between the mortal world and the immortal Realm of Chaos are now closed to me, still I would rather die having glimpsed eternity than never to have stirred the cold furrow of mortal life.

I embrace death without regret as I embraced life, without fear.

Best art I've seen so far is from brother Greyall.. Here's his drawing of Chapter Master Conrad of the Blood Dragons.

If you go searching for "Sisters of Battle" on deviant art, more often than not you get some images that are not safe to share :)

This is one of my favorites. I had it as my desktop at home and at work for a long time.

I miss the time when Chaos was that freaking awesome.

Favourite? Favourite?! I don't think I'd be able to choose just the one and I doubt picking a dozen would be easier even exluding fan-art (and also keeping within the confines of PA). That and the fact I'm a fickle bugger. :D

Okay, so considering one of my old standbys isn't PA related I'll post something PA related I've quite liked for a while. It's not necessarily my absolute favourite but it certainly is in my top 50. :)

Apologies for the lack of source, I forget (although I'm sure someone here knows).

One of the most breathtaking pieces of artwork in all of 40K, and something etched into my mind ever since I first saw it as a kid.

I love that guy. He's in Betrayer.

I am very fond of almost all of the tiny inset images in the third edition Space Marine codex. Not sure which artist(s) drew them though.

One of my favorites of all time is this:

I've also always been fond of the drawing of Ancient Galatan standing in the breach on Corinth. I'm still trying to figure out a way to repluicate it in block art for application to a Land Raider or Rhino hull.

Same here.

I was already excited about Betrayer, but now you've made me want it even more. Curse you ADB! Currse yoooooouuuu! *shakes fist*

:D

*snip*

Just fond of the organisation of this one. Plus, Devram Korda is awesome.

EDIT : don't know if this colored version is fan made, but even the black&white is cool.

My fav image of all time as well.

Colored version is indeed fanmade, they guy did an amazing job though so I'm more than happy.

I want to say my favorite 40k image is the Dark Apostle on the Word Bearers page of the Chaos 3.5 'dex (I believe it's by Paul Dainton, the Googles call it "Daemonworld"):

But to be totally honest with myself, there was this Karl Kopinski painting of the Raven Guard making planetfall, spread over two pages in the front of the 4e main rulebook. Best version of it I can find on the interwebs is MajesticChicken's recolor of it on Deviantart (which is also quite good), titled "Sons of Corax":

I got into 40k right at the start of 4e. A friend of mine convinced me to play Dawn of War, so I knew Space Marines were supposed to be these big huge guys running around spouting religious-sounding stuff about this Emperor fellow IN SPACE, but beyond that I didn't have much understanding of what they were about. Opening up the 4th edition rulebook for the first time and seeing that image, with that whole "They are my Space Marines and they shall know no fear" quote under it really defined what Space Marines were for me. I just love all the details, the Apothecary administering the Emperor's Mercy to a fallen brother, that guy behind him recording the battle with a quill, the chapter serfs supporting the Librarian's massive tome. Every piece of armor is an ancient monument to the Emperor's glory, and all the exposed cabling, the Chaplain covered in skulls, and the down-and-dirty-yet-ornate look of the tech really hammers in the feeling that this is NOT some cleancut Star Warsy-type universe. I look at this as my Final Boss for modeling, I dream of one day feeling confident enough in my own sculpting ability (and having enough money for all the bitz I'd need...) to make a diorama of this. I could wax on all day about it, I'll stop now. ;)

Still my favorite, and the piece(s) that truly nailed the 'Grim and Dark' feeling of 40k firmly in my mind forever....

Hell, I still rummage through the old art from 3rd ed. for inspiration from time to time.

I LOVE that japanese banner thrown in there.

Creepy.

That picture always made my mind go crazy, about what sort of secrets are hidden and unrecorded in those halls.

The left picture reminds me of something.. Someone refresh my memory- Who did that Emperor's Throne piece with the severed arm next to him?

Like Cyrox, Mark Gibbons' art work is a fav of mine. How ever, I also used to like Tony Ackland's stuff too. Haven't seen much of his stuff online, however, but his stuff in the RT:Era "Realm of Chaos" books are still awesome even after twenty years

Jes Goodwin's stuff is another I love. I know most of it is concept sketches, but even so :)

Despite being relatively new to the game one of my favorite pictures is the one on the Rogue Trader Cover of the Crimson Fists making a last stand. The one from the OP is also now on my short list.

For newer stuff I really like several of the HH novel covers. The new one they just posted may be my favorite.
