Hello fellow champions.

Following on from the victorious LPC, i have been busily building up my army I have now invested in some more mini's and am merrily building and painting away!

My first painted squad was some veterans which was my vow for the and had mixed results, but have tried to learn from the experience and hope to improve and have a half decent 4th coy.

I have bought a battleforce and some old metal minis, so the first one i have completed ( not based yet ) is a sergeant, please tell me if i am going in the right direction with these, you re wisdom will be much appreciated..

Hey Hezekiel, nice to see you're back in business! :tu:

You are definately on the right track! These are turnig out quite good actually, so you have every reason to be proud! I really like what you did with the sword and the face of this sergeant! I agree with GM Neo that your detailing is great!

Basing of course will help the model no-end but since you already ordered the basing kit, all we have to do is wait! :P Regarding the coils of the plasma, they BEG for color! How about purple? Not joking - I've seen it done in a Iron Hands army and it was jaw dropping! It could turn out to be your signature thing too, being uncommon an'all!

The assault squad guy... Is it possible to get a close up? I'm not sure I'm getting the face...

Thanks Cap , i will have a play with colours (i like the idea of purple) and see what you think, ..

As to the assault squad i basically just put them together and started to prime, then got bored painting black ( and promptly bought some spray!) so thought i would have a go at painting some freehand on the shield, i will put some updated pics of these over the next couple of days.

ok , please have a look below and tell me what you think any C/C will be much appreciated as i am new to this...

I Have had a go at basing the sgt and painting the coils with some colour what do you think?...

I have also nearly finished one of my assault squad...

Cheers..

Really like you your assault sergeant, looks ace!

Scouts look good too, nice attempt to make a burned metal muzzle of the heavy bolter! Maybe consider adding a little black? Like really dry, dry brushing? I think it will add to it considerably. Also good job with the coils. The contrast certainly looks better. Now try a bit highlighting on them, a lighter share of blue and pure white will suffice and the result would be excellent!

Keep on painting mate, things are shaping up!

Edit: forgot to mention the basing! Don't know how you did it but it rocks! It really makes the mini come alive!

Chaplain Lucifer,

Cheers mate, believe it or not i have highlighted (and washed the scouts troosers), i will give them a bit more of a going over!

Cap,

Thanks for your imput boss man,

I tried painting the coil with blue in the corners then mixed up some purple and tried to lighten it up, i will add a bit more,i think with this practice makes perfect  (i will keep practicing) do you think its worth getting a couple of purples?

Nice work Hezekiel, they are improving every time. I'm loving the purple plasma, that Semper is smarter than he looks:P

Never be afraid of so called 'extreme' highlighting and shading, on a small mini they actually need it to look 'normal'.

Cudos for sharing

<_<

stobz

That's pretty good work. I think you do the scout eyes much better than I did on my scouts, so well done.

I will echo what the others said, as someone who has discovered the virtues of "wahses" only in recent years ;) ... try and do repeat washes rather than one thick one. The other issue is I discovered if I take photos with a flash (as opposed to using two table lamps and a backing to reflect back the light) it oftens reduces the impact of your shading and makes it look a lot bland.

For the metal of the guns, try doing repeat badab Black Wash over your boltgun metal. Again soemthing I discovered recently (rather than dry brushing black on boltgun metal or boltgun metal on black) gives a nice subdued metal look... then drybrush the burnt effect on...

I also tried for the first time, doing an orang highligh and a yellow dot on the "lens" and "targeters"... a tiny effort and it makes a big difference. Looking at what you've done with the eyes...you have the skill to do then lens up too...

By the way, love what you've done with the old metal sergeants eyes.... the one with the scar going through one eye!!

Well done!!

Agree with all the above, also the 4th Company badge is a sod to paint, yours need a little touching up just to tidy them.

Try going with bigger squares as this makes it much easier

I do it this way...

http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz66/jonbrooks_photo/B%20and%20S%20WIP/Presentation1.jpg

Paint the kneecap Bleached bone

Paint the top half in watered down white

Use watered down Chaos black to:

1. Split it in half left to right

2. Split the top half in half again

3. Split the top half top to bottom in half

4. then in quarters on either side

Colour in alternate boxes in black and touch up the white as required.

This normally gives a consistant company sign fairly quickly.

The picture explains it better :)

I really love the 'blackness' of the PA, and although I'm fond of the highlights, I probably would have tried to make them a bit more subtle if I was going in that direction.

Luckily, I like my marines green.

I also love the way you've done the power weapons, I normally build up layers and streaks of blue ontop of a really light metallic like chainmail, or even mithril, I think I've definitely gotta try out the 'black metal' look you've got going there.

Some very skillful painting there, you've done the fine detail better than I would hope to, I love all the models there, but there's something about that Plasma/PW sgt, I really like his eyes!

In truth I think that's why many folks do 3rd or 5th company Greeenwing.

I agree with this assesment ;)

Shame because as we all know – the 4th is way cooler – so well worth the effort involved :P.

Don't know about that... ;)

Thanks all for your imput, all tips are very helpfull.

Isiah,

The 4th is DEFINITELY the coolest,

Elmo,

Thanks a lot mate! will be absolutely trying that technique, i have painted the assualt squad sergeant and turned out ok ( compared to other sergeant), but your way will make it quicker and easier to get a more consistant result i think

Tengo,

Cheers fella, i agree with the dark power armour it probably is better to have a slightly more toned down highlight, i am still kinda of testing things out( hence the thread) and posting as i go so that you guys who have more wisdom can steer me in the right direction. i have painted another sergeant and got an even darker finish on both the PA and highlight, so will post in next couple of days and see what you think.

The Shadow Guard,

Thanks for your kind words, will be giving these marines a good wash as per your wise advice. And am also experimenting with the orange effect on the lens's, i think i have seen some painted like that in the Codex. Only thing is when i start painting things like eyes or little scars my own start to go wonky or walleyed when i am trying to focus on the wee details :P . Does anyone else get that?

Thanks all again I will keep painting and posting if you dont mind.
