Brother dean
I bring this before the brotherhood because I am indecisive... Okay, when I lose my mojo (like now) there are things I do to trick myself into working... like just sitting at my desk untill I pick something up and start working... Looking at my unfinished projects, doing one off minis, cleaning stripped minis. I was cleaning the stripped backpack (bad primer) and banner for my ltd ed captain and decided that when in doubt, punt. I am not happy with the red cloak, I know I could do a creditable job but I'd rather do a diferent color (no not the purple on the studio version either). He is my 4th co captain and the 4th co is a black and white checkerboard above a bleached bone field. How would a black cloak with red chapter symbols on it look to evoke the original colors? http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w20/fred40k2002/Dark%20Angels/Azrael-1.jpg Will that make it too dark? What other colors should I consider? For comparison have a look at my 5th co Captain David: http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w20/fred40k2002/Dark%20Angels/Command1002.jpg I copied Nife's captain and his SW grey cloak cause it looked good... Chaplain Lucifer
Truthfully I'm not a big fan of large area of black tissue because black is a hard colour to paint in way that mimics tissue texture. Other Issue is that with black and red you get a big palette of colours on the miniature(black, red, bone, green, white), perhaps losing some cohesion looks-wise. just my 2 cents. Captain Semper
Personally I like red cloak especially over white robes. Red and white is a very striking combo highly reminiscent of DW! I think black will just make it way too dark... I guess white would also be a solution but a bit overdone... I'd stick to red myself. elmo
Personally speaking - black is a complete pig (I know from my recent stuff  ) I would steer clear of it if I could avoid it - as Cap and Chap said earlier black would make the model overly dark and can be hard to highlight for cloth. MadDoc
My suggestion is stick with the red over white, its an effective look, but then I might be somewhat biased. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250998-a-question-brothers/#findComment-3044439 Share on other sites
Brother dean
Yes you might.. We all might be at that... I guess I am doing red but I think I may have to get some of the new paint range to play with. I dont much like characters.... I've spent several hours faffing about with the red... <_< did the banner yesterday... http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w20/fred40k2002/Dark%20Angels/SecondSquad005.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w20/fred40k2002/Dark%20Angels/SecondSquad006.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250998-a-question-brothers/#findComment-3044762 Share on other sites
Captain Semper
The overall color combo looks fine to me although a brighter shade of red would be even better imo... not towards orange but towards blood red. elmo
You can highlight the raised parts of the cloak in blood red - that would be better imo. ^_^ Yay for the 4th! Tengo
I always like to paint cloaks/mantles red, with white (and if possible, gold) detail it just has that majestic feel to me. Other than that, DA Green and White detail would look good. Isiah
I think the crimson red colour you've gone for is just about right as it sits well with the DA's green plate. Great banner too btw. All awesome sauce. [Edit - purple cooling coils are novel and work well.] Cheers I Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250998-a-question-brothers/#findComment-3045399 Share on other sites
