Non GW chainswords

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of any decent non GW chainswords out there? The beefier and more brutal looking the better. GW chainswords are fine up to a point for me, but at the moment I'm trying to create a really mean looking assault squad and none of them are quite doing it for me. I like the double edged blade some of the Space Wolves ones have, but they are too small and thin overall. Ideally I'd get a load of the Forgeworld Assault squad one, but you can't buy it on it's own and I'm not shelling out for a FW Assault Squad for five chainswords! (I'm already going to have to get a boarding upgrade and chain axe pack, but that's a whole different unit project...)

I'm aware of the Kromlech Rippers, but there are only 3 designs in that pack and one is sword, so in a pack of 6 I'd be getting 4 chainswords. That plus the fact I already have more power swords than I need means I'd rather scout for other options.

So yes, alternatives, do any spring to mind?

The kromlech rippers make great eviscerators.

These may be large for limb replacement, but they do make some "beefy" weapons.

If you just want something different, MaxMini makes these.

The simplest and easiest way is to get a bunch of Chaos SM double sided chainsaws.

With a little knife work to remove the chaos arrows you have two sided chainswords that work well on loyal SMs.

You can 'cut and shut' two of them to make longer ones - pinning if careful/needed. If REALLY careful or an adequate converter, you can cut them lengthwise to thicken them out. If I had a camera I would put up examples, but I am sure there are others on here that could show you examples.

If you ask around CSM players they should have a few laying around in their bitz boxes, or look on the Bitz Sellers sites - plenty in the UK, and most are quick to deliver - 2-3 days.

Or you might consider these?:

Cheers for the quick responses guys.

Brother Nihm - Ork weapons certainly have the beefiness down, but they do look out of proportion with space marines (aged 12 I experimented with some Armageddon inspired Ork Hunter Space Marines and some of those conversions still haunt me today). They are worth considering for some heavy conversion work if I fail to find anything pre-made, but where possible I like to be lazy and have the parts already designed for me!

Jacinda - yeah, I do really like the Rippers, but the double edged one looks significantly smaller than the one on the left and that sort of thing would bother me inside one unit. Then there's the sword issue I laid out in the OP. I actually have my eye on those Steampunk weapons for my Techmarine and combat 'servitors'.

Tanith Ghost - see above really. While I like the look of the Kromlech Rippers they do have some flaws which would lead me to prefer something else if it's available.

I probably should have been a bit more specific in the OP that while I want the weapons to look beefy they should still be marine sort of scale. The FW Chain Axes are a perfect example, though the hafts are a little short (which can easily be rectified), the blades are big and nasty but not overly so and do not make the marine holding them look silly.

I know I might seem a little picky here, but I'm not discounting anything, I just want the broadest range of options possible.

Seleucus - yeah that was another option I was considering. I'm not a huge fan of the Curved Chaos chainsword but the more 'traditional' one looks good. The only problem there is the that the bitz sellers I usually use all seem to be out of them at the moment!

Funnily enough I just put in an order with anvil for a bunch of the Heretic Pistols and was eyeing up the chain glaives but they didn't quite look right to me. I might go back to them though and swap out the blades for some GW ones.

Keep it coming guys, it's all helpful.
