Lentron
Hi Guys, I have just started playing W40K so forgive any stupid questions. I have so far brought a Battle Box, Codex and Marine Commander (to convert into a Wolf Lord/WGBL) and a friend has given me a SW Terminator Set. This means I have the following to work with: 1 x Space Marines Commander 5 x SW Terminators 20 x SW Marines that can be converted into GH / WG / BC 5 x Scouts 1 x Drop Pod I am aiming for a 1k point army so far, the group of friends I have playing so far is an ~1k point Ultramarine army (From the Ult Vs Orks set with scouts and a whirlwind), 1.5k Chaos Army, and an extremely annoying 2k Tau Army. One of my friends is also expanding on the Ork army from that battle set and numbers 1.1k now. I am thinking 5 Terms in the Drop Pod and set them to hunt armour/threatening units; Scouts to try and hunt enemy armour from behind. Whether or not this is a good idea we will see lol. Now, I am not sure what to turn the 20 x marines I have into. Maybe 10 x GH, 8 x Blood Claws, 2 WG Leaders (1 for scouts, 1 for BC pack?) Or would it be better to have 2 x GH squads? Any help with unit comp/wargear and tactics would be greatly appreciated ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251140-a-new-pack-emerges/ Share on other sites

Toasterfree
i would also consider plasma pistols on the scouts to assist with taking out tanks, and heavy weapon units Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251140-a-new-pack-emerges/#findComment-3044470 Share on other sites

Lentron
Ok made the following changes: Replaced Wolftooth Necklace on the Wolf Lord with Wolf Talisman (Shouldnt need this as he is WS6 anyway) Replaced the 2 x Power Swords on Scouts with Plasma Pistols Replaced the 2 x Flamers on Grey Hunters with 2 x Melta Guns (Not sure if this should be plasma guns instead) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251140-a-new-pack-emerges/#findComment-3044488 Share on other sites

Forté
Welcome brother. Nice little starting list. But...your missing a trick with your Wolf Guard. 4 fists and a chainfist is what a vanilla Marine army would have. You have a chance to have some fun with them. Here's an example using bits from the box (so none of the fantastic combi weapons. WG wt Assault Cannon & Power Weapon WG wt Storm Shield & Wolf Claw WG wt Storm Shield & Chain Fist WG wt P.fist & Storm Bolter WG wt Frost Weapon & S.Bolster Drop pod Still 300 and by no means optimised but a bit more Wolfy. clanfield
i run with a more eco build and put in 3 gh packs i realise this isnt were your at yet so just a few thoughts if your poding your wolfguard the heavy flamer is more efficent and cheaper as would be storm bolter/power wepon on a few my typical pack is : 2 stm boltr/power weps 1 hvy flamer wolf claw 1 stm bter power fist 12x wolf claws drop pod roughly 100 pts cheaper as for scouts there amazing i run 10x bolt pistol knife +wulfwn+melta bombs they are a nice assult unit coming on the rear with 10 melta bombs to mess up tanks etc 50 pots more than your choice wolf lords are great but drop the saga and take the belt of russ he'll need a invi save vs heros and yes the wt necklace is a must as for grey hunters if i run 2 packs i go for a pod pack with 2 flamers and a power wepon or wulfen ,and a 2 plas gun pack as well for defence frendly objectives i find melta guns control what the squad will do to much in my psyc and prefure to be flexable in my assult, one old cheese is to take flamer for free and then a free plasma gun as the second wepon saveing a few more points Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251140-a-new-pack-emerges/#findComment-3044507 Share on other sites
chaptermasters
Go as many Grey hunters as you can. They are great. Don't put plasma guns on models with scout armour. Each scout with a plasma pistol/gun has about a 50% chance of killing it's self in a 6 turn game. Metla guns or Melta bombs are far safer. Looks like you are going to struggle with Tanks. Can you get hold of a Cyclone for your terminators, then attach it to a grey hunter squad. Relying on the Terminators with power/chain fists isn't a good option. If you deep strike or mount them in a drop pod. Your opponent will probably try to kill them the turn they arrive. You can pick up metal cyclone cheap on auction sites. They look fine on a larger base. http://www.chaptermasters.com/Space%20Wolf%20Terminators.jpg Otherwise use the missile lunchers and a plasma gun 3 tactical marines to make a small long fang squad. http://www.chaptermasters.com/Space%20Wolf%20longfangs.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251140-a-new-pack-emerges/#findComment-3044521 Share on other sites
Forté
Thought the 'free flamer free plasma/melta' had been FAQ'd. Maybe its just the sportsman in me. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251140-a-new-pack-emerges/#findComment-3044524 Share on other sites

Wolfsbane
Go as many Grey hunters as you can. They are great. Don't put plasma guns on models with scout armour. They look fine on a larger base. What scouts are on the board more than 3 turns? They come in the board turn 2-3, kill something, then get massacred unless the rest of your army is in their lines. Take plasma pistols, they are amazing with scouts that operate behind enemy lines. Space Wolves don't teleport, so if you want to deep strike your WG termies, do it in a drop pod like you have in your list. Remember that they can fire when they drop, but they cannot move or assault. So pick your targets carefully and try to block line of sight with your drop pod from nasties. Rune Priest, get one. Living lightning and murderous hurricane are wonderful powers. Jaws of the World Wolf will be amazing against your Tau friends since their initiative is only 2. On that note I would recommend getting transports for your grey hunters, simple and cheap via rhino or monstrous tank of doom with a land raider. Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
I agree with wolfsbane that scouts packs should be cheap and disposable. Give them a melta gun and either melta bombs or mark of the wulfen and keep the entire pack around a hundred points. Use them as a scare tactic that comes on blows something up and then dies whilst taking out a couple guys in cc. If your podding your TDAWG, take either the AC or the flamer, with the later obviously being the cheaper of the two. Make sure you have at least one 'dork', or bare bones, no upgrade model for those shots you just know are killing something. I always take a storm shield in my packs as well, but I think a power fist AND a chain fist might be a tad redundant. The chain fist is the better of the two. Grey Hunters are the best troop choice in the game. We get loads of potions, a bolt gun AND pistol and ccw for the additional attack, counter attack, and a stat line that makes ork players drool. Take them. Love them. Win with them. End of Line Edit: I typed 'loads of potions'. not 'loads of options'!! Kassill
Also, you can run two of the Grey Hunters as Wolf Guard who joined the the GH packs from the WG pack you already bought. Give them the fist as they will have more attacks, but you'd lose the extra special weapon, but could make up for it with a combi on the WG. Lentron
Thanks for all of the advice and help so far everyone :) One annoying thing that I have noticed about the battleforce box is that there are no meltaguns nor flamers, only plasma guns/pistols for special weapons.... so looks like I will have to go searching for bits :) I am building up the vanilla GH first, ill do up the special weapons once I can find some bits, I can do the plasmagun squad no worries though. Is it better to paint the marines with the weapons/arms off them, then glue them on later? Or is it better to paint the model as a whole and hope that I don't ham-fist them? If you aren't too far along in your constructure, I'd consider picking up a vanilla battleforce at some point. Let's you spread around the wolfy bits without overdoing the theme, and you get stuff like Meltaguns, Flamers, Missile Launchers, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251140-a-new-pack-emerges/#findComment-3046377 Share on other sites
