The departure of Necron Abyss

Recommended Posts

Anyone painting Crimson Fists will probably have noticed that Necron Abyss has gone the way of the Squats. It was a lovely paint and formed the base for mine and many other players Crimson Fist scheme. Previously my colour scheme was:

Black basecoat

Necron Abyss

Black wash

Paint the armour in a 50/50 mix of Necron Abyss and Regal Blue.

Highlight with Regal Blue then Ultramarines Blue, using Asurman Blue wash to tone down the highlights if need be.

So, the results of my little test. Apologies that the pictures are a bit rubbish.

So, the bad news. Kantor Blue is much lighter than Necron Abyss. In fact it's much closer to the mix of Necron Abyss/ Regal Blue I use for my armour. Altdorf Guard Blue is a bit lighter than Ultramarine Blue. It's also notably thinner.

The good news (though not shown in the picture): The new blue wash Drakenhof Nightshade is much darker and arguably better than Asurman Blue. Asurman was a good glaze but didn't create shadows. Drakenhof does create shadows beautifully, it's almost like someone premixed Badab Black and Asurman. The new glaze Guillman Blue is quite light but had worked nicely in shadowing snow bases so far. I can see it being very handy for dulling highlights in the same way I currently use Asurman Blue.

I'm going to try the following scheme as a replacement

Black undercoat

Kantor Blue base coat

Heavy wash of Drakenhof Nightshade. This should darken the shadows nicely

Go back with Kantor Blue on the armour plates.

Altdorf Guard Blue highlights

Guilliman Blue to tone down the highlights

The new red wash Carroburg Crimson has changed in a similar manner, gone is the almost glaze like in consistently of Baal Red, in is a red wash that really creates shadows. It looks quite nicely on the Crimson Fist powerfist I'm put it on so far.

Anyway, that's all for now! I'll get together some step by step pictures of how the new colours work out.

Check Warstore for Vallejo paints. Their "Game Color" line has a similar color, off the top of my head, I don't know the name. The Game Color series pretty much duplicates the GW colors, including ones they discontinued over the years, like Copper. Good paints.

Between Reaper, Vallejo, P3, and GW, I figure I have all the colors I'll ever need... ;)

Long story short I just grabbed 5 pots of Necron Abyss and a couple of Regal Blue from the interwebs, that probably sums up the match!

Kantor Blue is a nice colour but it's considerably lighter than Necron Abyss. It's also a lot more of a pastel shade, Necron Abyss has a tinge of purple that really sets it apart.

I've taken a few in progress shots but the difference between the two isn't too clear on my not particularly fancy camera/ light conditions.

If I was starting a fresh army of Crimson Fists I would have no problem using Kantor Blue. Continuing an army in progress it's just too noticable.

Your thorough and rational quest to devise a good looking process using the new paint line is an affront to human dignity! I demand you replace this post with a long rant about how GW have killed your puppy by changing their paint line, at once! :HQ::HQ:

On a more serious note, I look forward to the pics, I'm about to get back into painting after a break and most of my paints need replacing(the GW's have dried out and the Vallejos have separated so much that they're unsalvagable), and so far most reviews of the GW paint line amount to "they rock" or "they suck".
