Chapters of the Badab War painting challenge.

Recommended Posts

Oh hey guys, what's happening in this thread!?

Nice to see some more Badab War armies here. Good stuff. Can I cast my lot in with some Tiger Claws and Tyrant's legion stuff?

Hi, glad to have you on board and especially with some tyrants legion!

- edit - ; I just realised who you are DB, i read your blog the first week i signed up here and couldnt stop till i finished - gripping human drama:) and I still love the look of the old zerkers minis as tiger claws. In fact you inspired me to try it with my own but hopefully with more time to get ready lol. Keep clutching RT101 and never lose the faith!!!!!!

@Dusktiger really nice work on the scouts, a head swap makes them instantly better then the regualr scuplts, are they BA heads btw?

yep, those are all BA heads on that squad. i like them cause you get enough variation in the squads even if you double up on them a bit; painting the hair and skin in slightly different colors makes them look like they're different even if it's the same head.

I feel like such a slacker for not getting anything done yet! Unfortunately work and home projects have been taking up my time, hopefully next week I can get a good start. On a side note I have not had a chance to order my copies of IA 9 and 10 yet (I know again with the slacking) and I've been trying to do some research on markings for the Astral Claws and unfortunately I haven't been able to turn up many details yet. I've noticed that several images will have some marines with two silver shoulder pads, two blue, one blue and one silver, some with gold trim shoulder pads and others without, and some number markings on knee pads. Is there a method to the madness that determines the color of their shoulder pads ( for example certain companies or units get a certain color combination) or is it not defined in the books. I will be placing my order this weekend, I was just hoping to get a little jump on it to help plan out my scheme.

@ fudblinker - I do have access to those books. I will have a look in the next couple of days and see if I can decipher the marking scheme they have. Worst case scenario just go with codex markings as the Astral Claws were until the seccession.

Thanks, I appreciate the assist. At the moment I was thinking of going with the codex markings like you said with maybe a few personal deviations, but if possible I want to incorporate or at least take inspiration from the "official" markings. I'll also dig up my trusty old insignium astartes for further inspiration.

@fudblinker - Ok, so I can't figure it out with a high degree of certainty, there is a lot of variation.

What I can tell easiest is that if you want early badab war then use the astral claws tiger head chapter symbol. This is on a blue background and the rest of the armour is silver.

If you want to go late Badab war then the tyrants claw thing is the way to go. Whether on a blue background on not is a bit wishy washy so I suppose it's personal choice.

Veterans seem to get a bit of gold involved in the action but helms don't change colour. And company numbers seem to be roman numerals on a kneepad, though either side.

To be honest, given that they are basically a legion, I would just make up your own unit and make up your own spin on the heraldry as long as you roughly stick to the general scheme you see in the photos i.e. silver amour and maybe blue on the shoulderpads and the tyrants claw as chapter symbol.

looking real quick at my pdf versions, i see that retaliator squads, which were specialized assault squads, are shown without their jump packs and have all their exhausts painted gold. squad leaders and apothecaries, etc; anyone of authority beyond 'guy with a bolter' has both shoulder pads blue with the chapter insignia.

the pictures in the book show apothecaries as all white, save for blue insets on the shoulders, and the left knee cap.

the retaliator squad leader has gold shoulder trim.

terminator armor's shown with both shoulderpads blue, and the left knee pad as well. the 'inner' part of the shoulder pad that peeks out from under the termy pad is painted gold, along with his belt. and the eagle on his chest is mythril silver.

the whole chapter appears to favor green eye lenses.

just to keep people from mistaking the color scheme for relictors and silver skulls and all those other silver/grey armored chapters, i'd probably paint all shoulderpades blue with matching silver trim to the armor, with squad leaders having a gold trim. it would look nice and visually appealing i think

Astral Claws have 'loose' standards in my opinion. Everything mentioned by LamenterMarine and Ddusktiger are valid.

Armor is mostly (or completely) silver/metallic. Knee pads and the main surface of shoulder pads are blue. Then, you have either chapter symbol (the lions head or the tyrant's claw). Then some gold on veterans, retaliators, and even squad leaders.

This is the madness of a Chapter that had numbered around 3,500 astartes. I personally wouldn't have given specific unit markings to all of them if I had wanted to hide those numbers.

Wow, beautiful Astral Claws! I tried to paint one once when I was deciding on a chapter and it came out horrible (that silver!). If I'd got a result half as good as yours...

Cal585, Post 2 - More Marines Errant Test Schemes

Having decided on white (cheers for the feedback), I have now been tinkering a little more and came up with an alternative white (Marine on the left):

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii106/Cal585_GW/005-2.jpg

I know he's halved the wrong way, I painted him up from something else and I just don't feel like stripping him :P

This time, instead of building up from a grey base, I used bleached bone. Makes the white a little warmer and potentially sets him apart from the Eagle Warriors or some such? Also tested out black vents rather than metallic. Painting the vents the same as the colour half is also a possible alternative. I'm interested to hear people's opinions on which is better out of the vents and white colouring. After that, it's off to painting my first proper miniature.

(Personally I think I prefer the bleached bone white, but maybe that's because I just found it easier to get a solid colour. The camera washes out the white a little in the picture - it's a bit more creamy and there is a bit of depth)

Oh man, there's some great work in here. I can't wait to see some more. PJ1933 I especially love your dreadnought, beautifully executed.

Thanks :) and as you like my dread so much here is another angle:
