Chapters of the Badab War painting challenge.

Recommended Posts

Hey dude, I cut down a standard razorback/predator/whirlie hatch around the outsides of the turret ring. I then mocked up the position over the front of the Rhino hull where I wanted it and cut into the area. I then glued it in place and green stuffed around the sides to make it a flush fit as well as green stuffing over the old drivers hatches and underneath to add some strength.

That then gave me the room to mount the LR engine in the back with the mesh so you could see it.

Relatively straightforward but takes a bit of finesse to make it look like a factory model. Let me know if you give it a go.

fudblinker, Post 1 - WIP Astral Claws

Well I've finally made some progress on my crash test dummy...er... I mean test mini for my Astral Claws paint scheme. Here are some pics from over the weekend.

The first couple of images just show the standard marine bits and the base. For the base I was trying something new and attempting to make a sort of concrete tile floor with some debris on it. I don't think this first attempt quite came out like I intended. I think there was too much sand on this one, so for the next one I think I will go with no sand to see how that looks. I could always add a little later to try and give the debris feel I want. The "tiles" were made from cut up pieces of a 3"x5" paper card. For painting the base I did a base coat of Adeptus BattleGrey, a wash of Badab Black, a drybrush of Fortress Grey, and a light dry brush of Space Wolves Grey.

The next couple of images are my test mini after one coat of Boltgun Metal, the shoulder pads after two coats of Regal Blue and one coat of Ultramarine Blue. They also show my test of using gluing some of the bits to pieces of sprue to help with painting. I think for the future I will just glue the shoulder pads onto the marines first since the trim color is the same main color as the rest of the model (with my Ultramarines I've found it to be difficult to paint the inner edge of the shoulder pads yellow.)

When I sprayed my primer coat of Chaos Black either it was too humid outside or I got a little too close on a few of the bits, it really only shows on the bolter and the shoulder pads. With this being the test mini I'm not really concerned enough to strip the model and start over, that and I'm so far behind already!

Sorry but Im going to have to pull out of this guys. Real life has taken a run up and booted me square in the stones. :)

Ive also actually decided while in the process of painting the first couple of Star Phantoms that Im going to jump ship to Mortifactors I wont have to change my process too much and the colour scheme should be a little easier to get uniform results with. plus Mortifactors is a much cooler name than Space Ghosts. :D

I already poked them in the eye. A punch would just be cruel? No?

Like I say work/life in general is really eating into my hobby time lately so I cant commit to any timeframe based challenges, even one as relaxed as this. I may well revisit the Star Phantoms at some point as I do really like the colour scheme and what little fluff they have but I will probably wait until I can do the chapter symbol justice with freehand. Im reading Warriors of Ultramar at the moment and loving the description of the Mortifactors hence why they are stealing the glory (and models) at this time.

just print some star phantoms transfers.. surely you could ignore the "challenge" part as such and just take part on a glacial scale timeframe of "i will post stuff when i can because star phantoms are cooler than mortifactors and their meditating trancey ways."

and in regards to the thought of being too cruel i will leave you with a quote.

"We are at War with forces too terrible to comprehend. We cannot afford mercy for any of its victims too weak to take the correct course. Mercy destroys us; it weakens us and saps our resolve. Put aside all such thoughts."

now punch them in the fething face!

Sorry but Im going to have to pull out of this guys. Real life has taken a run up and booted me square in the stones. <_<

First, sad to hear you have to back out my friend. Real life sucks sometimes.

Second, you need to let me know when you start work on your Mortifactors. Hands down one of the creepiest Chapters in 40k!

Rodentbane, Post 2 - WIP Tac Squad

Here's my assembled but yet unpainted first 5 marines for the Carcharadon Astra. Let me know if they're complete pants or anything, I should have painted pics up in the next couple of days.

Sweet posing on the lamenters Mr. Malevolent, I absolutely love the guy with the two hander! The yellow is really vibrant without looking cartoony, and the checkers are intimidatingly well done. Can't wait to see more from you and everyone else here, keep it up guys.

Cheers

Hey folks, long time lurker in these parts but I've finally bit the bolt-shell and signed up, inspired to do so by this thread. There's some fantastic stuff in here and general atmospher is really inspiring. As such I hope I'm not too late to throw my hat into the ring. I'm afraid I may fall into the "mad baboon" part of this thread but I hope I can add something. Who doesn't like baboons anyway?

So if I'm allowed I'd like to present my Astral Claws Strike Group...

Great to see everyone getting on with stuff, due to going away with work for a couple of days I'm going to a day or 2 late with my final entry for this month but I just thought I'd show you that I have actually been getting stuff done;

I know what you were all thinking.....

And out comes:

Sorry FW I love you and all, and you have lots of my money already but I can't afford lots of these.

Fear not, I'm not that good:

Eventually they will become counts as attack bikes. Yes buying attack bikes would be easy but my army is meant to be for boarding ships and not fighting in fields and stuff and it's more fun this way.

Lorenzen Post #3 - Fire Angels, 2nd Company Command Squad

Having just been through the whole plog (after a 4 year gap from 40k) I feel it only right that I let people know how cool there stuff is....

The Yak

Hey guys, I just thought I'd drop in and introduce myself. since Dark Brotherhood dropped out, I'm doing the Tiger Claws chapter. As I'm a noob, I went for the Black with Orange shoulders and legs rather than the stripy scheme...

Anyway, I've not actually started and I won't make the next deadline, as I am stripping the paint off of some of my less well painted models so I can re-use them, hence the thread about Stripping Paint from Plastic in the painting tutorials section.

Everything I've seen so far has been outstanding, I really have my work cut out for me on this one. Should be fun though :P

I confess Brothers, I missed the deadline. I shall report to the chaplains for penance. In the meantime here's the first 5 (mostly) painted Carcharadon Astra. Forgiveness for the phone cam pics, my dslr is on the fritz atm. I decided that I'm far to lazy/bad to freehand the chapter badge, so I got one 'o' them giant sheets of forgeworld decals but I haven't been able to get any decal solvent yet, anyone have any suggestions?

They also show my test

For my urban bases I normally do adeptus battle grey, codex gray, fortress gray, Flesh wash (very dark or light depending on the model), Astro gray. This i have found ads good depth to your urban terrain(depending on the model you can skip battle grey) Astros gray is a foundation so it takes less than normal for a dry brush.

Down side = lengthy

Upside = good results

Edit: so far i have yet to see a marine that sucks on this topic. everyone is doing a great job.

I will finish my 5 marines when im a little less drunk. :(

Unfortunately work and life have conspired to take my hobby time away from me. I was unable to finish my squad, or even my test mini for that matter. I am now stuck out of state until the end of June for some military training, so I will have to redouble my efforts in July and knock out 3 squads!
