Istaarn's New Independent Characters

Recommended Posts

Right, so I was in NY the other day and went to the official GW store; and the sight of its busted-up sign out front just about broke my heart. So, in the spirit of supporting the fading glory of official GW stores, I splurged on two finecost minis, and this is what I did with them.

First we have counts-as-Dante, to lead my Dragonguard unit (counts as Sanguinary Guard, natch - I posted them a while ago). I was always partial to the "AHH! MOTHERLAND!" Emperor's Champion, but never had an excuse to use him. So now I tacked on some grenades and the Possessed Wings (which my painter hopefully can make look like living metal), and here he is. The fluff behind the wings is that they are an ancient artifact, forged long ago, gifted to the Chapter, and blah-blah-blah. All in all I think he turned out good.

Second we have Joe Commander; no, really. I have many Librarians in my army (because I like psykers), but only a few non-psyker commanders. This guy will serve me when I need an AA or PA commander with power weapon and just about any gun I want; he's got a holster and he could be hiding anything bolter-sized under his cloak. The base is Sicarius of course, but his sword looked like a toothpick, and who stands around resting a SHEATHED SWORD on the ground like that anyway? The head is from the Sevrin Loth's honor guard range, the kit that truly keeps on giving (I bought it ages ago and still have one head left after this). Sicarius' default backpack looked too bland as well, so I replaced it.

I see what you did there:

:)

I like how you covered up the "U"s on the buckle. I can't tell from the image but did you remove the ultramarine icon on the tabard? If so, how?

Ha! I haven't seen yours before today. Great minds I guess..?

I dremeled the U on the tabard with a wide sander... very gently... and then seeing as how that it still looked like crap, I slapped the "skull with wings" emblem over the top of it.

Because I used the original hand for the weapon, he holds the halberd a little closer to himself than he would with the GK hand. This allows the haft to tilt right across the tabard, nicely obscuring any kind of shortcomings in cover-up.
