Honda
Probably like quite a few people on this board, the news of a brand new range of paints left us with some level of trepidation, mixed with hope. I spent a good 45 minutes last weekend, just looking at colors, getting the new names in my head, etc. For the most part, I like the expanded range, though I am primarily interested in the Base, Layers, and Washes. Since I am preparing for a project I need to have my colors sorted out and arrive at some level of comfort with them. So I got Dawnstone (layer), Khorne's something or other (base), and Ghenna (Shining Gold equivalent). My first observation is that all three paints appeared to be a fair bit dehydrated, so I added anywhere from 15-30 drops of water to each pot, depending on how thirsty it looked. I'm not sure if that is just a function of the paint having been manufactured a while back to meet the demand for the launch and that newer paints will have more water in them, but I'm curious if others have noticed this as well. I've been working on the base "grey" that I'm going to use and therein seems to be my second issue. I was fairly disappointed with how it covered over a test model that had previously been covered with Space Wolves Grey (a fairly light color) and it seemed to be a bit splotchy and needed a second coat. Have others using this color noticed the same thing or did my thinning mess up the paint? From a consistency perspective, the paint still is a ways from the "milk" I usually try to thin down to, so it doesn't appear as if I have added too much water, but I could be wrong on that. The Khorne's red is the Red Gore equivalent, though a base, so a bit thicker. Even after adding water, this still did a good job of covering the SWG. The Ghenna appears to have more red in it than the Shining Gold (SG), but it seems to be pretty close just looking at the bottle. I'll still have to try it on something to see if it comes close to SG which my unfinished Custodes are based in. I think I can work with this one either way and as long as I don't try to match exactly (i.e. paint next to SG), I should be Ok. Still, I'm a bit concerned that with a random sample of paints, with a third being Ok, a third close, but different, and a third possibly problematical. I know that is WAY too small a sample to come to any real conclusions (except for the need to hydrate), so I don't want to form any strong opinions right now, but is anyone else seeing similar issues? Dosjetka
I won't be able to help you much for the moment, but I'm thinking of getting some paints as well, so I'll post my observations here when I get some paint and models. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread though to see what other people have posted. Cheers for opening a discussion on the new range  Ludovic Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251654-the-new-paints/#findComment-3051226 Share on other sites
King Willy
I got similiar results with a couple of the greens. What Ive found is it's harder to use layers as a base coat over the primer, when I go straight Goblin green equivelent (Warpstone glow) over the black it comes out very splotchy and needed a second coat, but I used Gnarloc Green to foundation and it went over fine, you seem to have to really do the base then layer route or do two coats of a layer to get a good finish. My paints also came a bit thirsty as you put it, asked the store why they said they have been stocking up before the sending them out so the next batches should be significantly better especially as they get the mixes better. lhg033
i've picked up around 30 of the new paints though i've so far only used the ones for the khorne and the bone colour schemes from the GW site to see how these turn out. i'm just turning my hand to their idea of black now too. the bases need a bit of water. khorne red covers black pretty well afterwards (as honda says - close to red gore. much nicer than mechrite red i think for Flesh tearers) but the bleached bone equivalent took a couple of layers for good coverage and looked a little plasticy. The layer paints are about the same as i found standard paints before hand - a drop or two of water with the exception of eshin grey which seemed to need more. i'm not getting on amazingly with the drybrush paints so far. It may be they dont suit armour to much anyway but on a ever so slightly damp brush (cleaned and dried from previous colour) they covered like normal paint over the whole area i was doing rather than the raised edges (chest eagle is now completely grey). this is with barely anything on the brush at all. StormDragon
I've picked up three layers, one wash and two glazes. So far I've only opened up one of the layers, Dawnstone as it happens, I'll crack open the other a bit later on tonight. On opening the paint I thought it looked thicker and more plasticy than the old paints, so I guess that would equate to being a bit more dehydrated that the old paints. I didn't add any water to the pot I just put the paint on my pallet and added water there. I have to say I added less than I thought I'd need based on the thickness of the paint, thinking I'd give it a go and add a bit more water if needed. As soon I got the paint on the miniature I realised it didn't really need any more water since it wasn't really covering the primer very well. I'll admit Dawnstone over a black primer in one coat might be asking a bit much but I'm sure I got better coverage over black from Codex grey. Having said that now I've got two coats on the mini it looks fine. So it looks like my experience of Dawnstone matches Honda's. From a colour matching perspective I'd say Dawnstone is a bit lighter than than Codex grey, but that is comparing a mini that has just been base coated to one that has been finished so I'll reserve judgement until I've finished my test mini. Mazer Rackham
I've bought a set of these so I'll put my findings here: Mephiston Red - nice colour, needed two coats and a little water to smooth it over black. Close to VGC Scarlett Red/Gory Red in shade. Carroburg Crimson - nice, seems darker than Baal Red. Better than Vallejo's red wash shade. Evil Sunz Scarlet = Blood red. Nice, needed a little thinning, nothing major. Wild Rider Red - not sure, looks like a mix of Blood Red and Blazing Orange - saves me mixing it - needed a little thinning, but ok to work with Kindleflame - Heresy in a can - not sure how to get the best out of it, but was advised to let water nowhere near it...need some fine tuning here Bloodletter - I liked it, tied things together and enriched the coulours, shaded Kindleflame nicely, although I think I would need a more orange tone as kindleflame is kind of pink. I'm just an average joe painter so your desires/expectations may vary. MR. Larkyn
Kindleflame - Heresy in a can - not sure how to get the best out of it, but was advised to let water nowhere near it...need some fine tuning here Well, being a DRYbrushing paint, I can only wonder why you need to keep it dry. ;) I picked up the Super Package Deal online, and have to say, I like the new paints. Bases are the old Foundations, Layers are the old Standards, Shades are the old Washes, Glazes are strange, Dry paints are cool. Overall, very impressed. Metric crapton of new metal paints. Gop
Anyone used the textures yet? The snow looks intersting but mixing in some sand to white paint probably is similar? Raphiel
Anyone used the textures yet? The snow looks intersting but mixing in some sand to white paint probably is similar? I've bought the Stirland Mud texture paint. I don't use it for basing, but I use it for weathering vehicles. Still have to develop some techniques, but when I've got some results I'll share them. The texture paint itself seems nice. It simply is what it says on the pot. It is a thick paint with fine sand mixed in it. I think it could work great for quick and easy basing, certainly after a quick drybrush with a lighter color. lhg033
am keen to know what the texture paint does to brushes. am obviously not about to use my detail ones for it but still, cans imagine it do the shape any good? just to confirm - it was zandri dust i was using that looks similar to beached bone (though the colour matching has ushabti bone as the match). a wash of seraphim sepia sorted out hte plasticy look and gives a really nice realistic base bone colour. my previous method was a few washes of bestial brown over bleached bone and working back up to bleached bone from there. am quite keen to see how this turns out following the GW bone guide. i need to pick up flesh colours at some point and possibly will grab another gw colour 'set' to play around with. have to say i'm pretty happy with the range so far Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251654-the-new-paints/#findComment-3052997 Share on other sites
Honda
While browsing around the intarwebz, I found an excellent article that helps with some colors...with some bonus excellent Novamarine action.
