Ravager with 3 Darklances, Flickerfield and Night Shields. 125 points

1,500 points

In practice I’d won 7 of my eight games with this incarnation of my army, only loss was to my friend James’ Imperial Guard the night before ToS began! I was pretty happy with the way the army performed in testing, only really showing vulnerability to armies that could spam AV 12 and pack in a lot of high strength, long range shots - James’ chimera spam guard being a prime example.

Without further ado I'll get right on into the games.

Game 1: This game was against a guy called Eddie who had a beautifully painted/converted Snakebite Ork force. It went on to win the ‘Best Army’ award, you can see pictures on the Warhammer World Facebook site.

Eddie won four out of his five games during the weekend - so his army clearly worked as nicely as it looked! I can’t remember all the wargear everything had, but this is the general jist.

His list:

Wazdakka

Big Mek with Custom Forcefield

5 Lootas

4 Nob Bikers with a Painboy and mixed weapons for wound allocation

5 Bikers with a Nob

20 Boys Nob with a Power Klaw

10 Boys, Nob with a Power Klaw

10 Grots

2 Deff Koptas

Battlewagon

Battlewagon

Scenario: Pitched Battle, Annihilation.

Eddie deployed first, his Battle Wagons in the middle flanked by his Bikers and Nob Bikers, with a Unit of looters and a unit of grots hugging some terrain. His Deff Koptas were as far forward as possible....

I deployed as far back as I could, relying on my speed and range to win me the day... then his Kopta’s made a scout move. Which I forgot they could do! He was sent up for a first turn charge on two of my venoms which would be bad news. Not only could it cripple some of my firepower but potentially losing such cheap early Kill Points would have been bad play by me... then I stole the initiative (evil laugh - sigh of relief)! At that point things were firmly in my favour. With so many s8 ap2 weapons (not to mention poisoned weapons) all his Nob Bikers died before doing anything.

I also made a point of gunning down the lootas with my many splinter cannon shots, they were my prime target to stop my flimsy vehicles from being takenout. My Wyches and Archon killed his scouting Deff Koptas in close combat, earning themselves Feel No Pain and then went on to take out the bikers and half of the large boyz squad before dying.

Then it was just a case of picking off his stuff as it came across the table. I think he had 3 kill points by then end of the game and I'd killed his entire army except for the Big Mek with one wound left! There was a funny moment where I fired 4 monoscythe missiles at 10 gretchin... and only killed the Runtherd... especially amusing as in the fluff the monoscythe missiles go off at head height, I guess the gretchin were too short! Even though I caused roughly 18 wounds!

Good game to start with, I felt kind of bad for Eddie that I stole the initiative, but I still think I was fast and shooty enough to have recovered even if he'd had first turn.

Final result: Victory to me 10 – 3

Game 2: This game was against a Chaos Marines force.

His list:

Lash Prince with Wings

Lash Prince with Wings

4 Terminators with Combi-meltas, one had a Chain Fist

10 Chaos Marines with an Icon, Powerfist Champ, 2 Melta guns, Rhino

10 Chaos Marines with an Icon, Naked Champ, 2 Melta guns, Rhino

Greater Daemon

3 Obliterators

Land Raider (Terminators were in here)

Scenario: 3 Objectives, Dawn of War.

I won the roll off and put two objectives in my side of the table, Marcel deployed his objective in the opposite corner from my ‘safest’ objective.

My opponent in this game was brilliant, the entire game was just full of laughs, whilst being really hard fought too.

Hats off to my opponent, he played really well - in fact I've never played anyone who was quite so good at hiding his troops from my venoms! Eventually all that hiding caught up with him though as, at one point, he clustered one of his squads behind the wreck of their rhino and I caused 35 wounds with my Razorwing - the missiles either hit or scattered by less than four inches! Only his aspiring champ and meltagun survived  – the missiles also took two wounds off the Greater Daemon, I love Razorwings so much.

It was pretty close despite all that, Marcel managed to dismount my Wyches with fire from his Obliterators and then lash them into open terrain. The next turn he lashed them again and plasma cannoned my unfortunate Wyches to death!

His Terminators also really outdid themselves, accounting for my Blaster Trueborn, 2 Venoms and a Warrior squad... but in the end my speed and firepower won me the game. I held my backfield objective all game, killed the troops holding his objective and then in the last couple of turns contested a middle objective... thought for a while it looked like the two survivors of the razorwing's wrath might camp the objective in the Land Raider.

Thankfully I had plenty of lances to hand!

It felt a lot closer than perhaps it felt from my opponents perspective, he fought tooth and nail and really played for it. If I hadn't destroyed the raider he could potentially have pulled off a draw with a last minute contestation - yet again, so glad I have lances

Marcel ended up being my favourite opponent vote (he scored 5 in that category) - great game all round, a strange mix of extremely tense and ridiculously fun.

Result: 2-0 Victory to me.

Game 3: was against a Dark Eldar player called Rob.

His list:

Baron Sathonyx

Haemonculus with Agoniser, Liquifier and Webway Portal

15 Hellions

5 Wracks with a Liquifier

10 Wyches with Haywire Grenades, 2 Shardnets and Impalers, and a Hekatrix with an Agoniser

5 Warriors, 1 Blaster in a Raider with a Flickerfield

6 Reaver Jetbikes, 2 Blasters

5 Beastmasters, 1 with an agoniser, 10 Khymerae, 6 Razorwing flocks (one very scary unit – about 90 attacks on the charge!)

A Ravager with Night Shields

A Talos with a Twin-linked Heat Lance and Twin-Linked Liquifier

Mission: Bases - Spearhead

Rob hid his wracks and a Haemonculous at the back behind a bastion with his objective and gave me first turn. I put my objective in a wood in my table quarter.... I'm glad Dark Eldar are fast as there was acres of space between objectives! There wasn't anything for me to shoot at for the first two turns so I turboboosted around in preparation for his reserves arriving :P. I figured that I had the greater speed and flexibility - but thanks to Rob's stuff arriving from reserve he'd probably get the opening shots of the match.

His ravager and the raider arrived in his turn 2, moving on from the board edge oppositve my objective - with clear line of sight to my Razorwing. Thankfully I made my cover saves from turbo-boosting with a roll of 4 and 6 (Flickerfields wouldn't have saved me from the first shot!). In my return turn I killed the ravager, the raider and all of the warriors because my entire army didn’t really have anything else to shoot at besides some pot-shots at the Wracks! Rob's reinforcements kept coming in through the webway portal and his board causing some damage to my Venoms - though my Trueborn gunned down the Talos with a single salvo after I saved their Venom from it's Heat Lance with a Flickerfield save.

The warp beast unit had me really, really worried as they could easly have camped my objective or killed anything they got in combat with. Once again, speed and firepower (with a healthy dash of luck!) saved the day. My trusty Razowing got to an angle where the beast pack couldn't take cover saves and unleashed it’s strength 6 AP 5 missiles. The Razorwing and 3 venoms managed to cause enough wounds to cause a moral check (killed 4 beastmasters, 3 flocks and 4 Khymerae) and they fled the table!

Winning the game would have been much harder without that happening. I saved the missiles on my remaining razorwing for when the Hellions and the Baron turned up (in-case they Deep-Strike into my table half) but I was putting on enough pressure that Rob had to bring them on from his webway portal.

The hellions killed killed all my Wyches with shooting before charging my Archon and blowing up a venom (which exploded and killed five of them). Rob lost combat by 1 with my Archon (Rob failed a 2++ save on the Baron!) and his Hellions failed their leadership and my Archon ran the Baron and the remaining 7 down! Having killed off the last jetbike to prevent it from contesting I flew 4 vehicles onto his objective to contest :P while I held mine.

Result: 1-0 Victory to me - At the close of play on day one I’d won 3 games and lost 0 - pretty good going so far!

Game 4: Was on table 2 against a Grey Knight Player called Franco.

My heart sank when I got there and saw his army

His list:

Coteaz

An Inquisitor with 3 Servo Skulls and Psychotroke Grenades

Venerable Dreadnought with 2 Twin-Linked Auto-cannons and Psybolt Ammunition

Dreadnought with 2 Twin-linked Auto-Cannons and Psybolt Ammunition

Dreadnought with 2 Twin-linked Auto-Cannons and Psybolt Ammunition

Dreadnought with 2 Twin-linked Auto-Cannons and Psybolt Ammunition

6 Purifiers, 5 halberds and 1 Hammer

3 Inquisitorial Henchmen in a Razorback with Psybolt Ammunition

3 Inquisitorial Henchmen in a Razorback with Psybolt Ammunition

3 Inquisitorial Henchmen in a Razorback with Psybolt Ammunition

3 Inquisitorial Henchmen in a Razorback with Psybolt Ammunition

5 Interceptors with a Psycannon

Stormraven with Plasma Cannons

Scenario: 5 Objectives, Dawn of War

Of all the armies I saw at ToS it was the one I didn't want to play against – that much High Strength firepower, when twin-linked, is doom for my army. I got horribly shot to pieces - it wasn't even close! By turn 6 I had killed 2 squads of henchmen and a Psyback.... all I had left was an immobilised ravager with no guns... which was shot down in turn seven by his entire army!

My opponent said that he'd never lost to Dark Eldar and I could see why. He gave me some interesting things to consider, like the possibility of taking Hellions instead of Wyches (and the Baron rather than an Archon) - I think if I ever fight an army like that again I'm going to try and kill off the troops choices and then just run and hide as much as possible. Going for the draw!

I still enjoyed the game despite it being VERY one-sided in his favour. Our game put Franco on a 4-0 streak, but he eventually lost to Yiaw’s Deathwing who’d cleaned house, winning all 5 of their games and giving Yiaw the overall best player award.

I was always going to struggle against this many Grey Knight vehicles and this much twin-linked Psybolt spam - 4 Riflemen is just horrendous.

Result: 4-0 loss to me – I was totally tabled!

Game 5: My last game of April ToS, I was very much looking forward to it. My original goal was to win 3 – so if I could win 4 that’d be amazing! I’d spoken to the other Dark Eldar players and I had the best record (along with Rob who I played earlier – he was also 3-1).

This time I’d be up against a really nice Flesh Tearers force lead by a guy called Matt. This army was beautifully painted and a very fluffy composition. He'd won 3 and lost one, like me. He did mention that he won his 3 games by being very aggressive and he’d lost the game where he tried to use his Stormraven defensively. He said that he’d not fought Dark Eldar often and was thinking of starting an army so he’d be interested in how my army played.

His List:

Reclusiarch

Sanguinary Priest with a Jump Pack (joined the assault marines)

Furioso Dreadnought with Extra Armour

6 Deathcompany, 1 Power Fist

10 Assault Marines, 2 Melta and One Fist

10 Tactical Marines, Fist, Flamer and Missile Launcher in a Rhino

Baal Pred with Assault Cannon

Baal Pred with Assault Cannon

Stormraven with Mult-Melta, Assault Cannon and Extra-armour

Mission: Annihilation, Spearhead.

This game was a fun way to end the weekend, Matt was a great guy and took everything in good humour. The dice gods were with me and I made roughly 75% of my flickerfield saves and my skimmers dodged every attempted ram that matt’s gun-less vehicles made.

Matt said himself that it all went wrong when he used his Stormraven to try and shoot down a Razorwing in the first turn and I agree - I think it cost him the game.

Though he immobilised me, he didn't shake or destroy it. In my turn I shot it down and started picking away at the death company and the dread within. It was 6-2 to me by turn four, 6-4 by turn five and I killed what was left of his army in my turn six. Fun game but I felt kind of bad for him - losing the Raven in his half of the table was a huge blow. He did and incredibly brave Deep Strike with some assault marines in the middle of all my vehicles, and it nearly paid off but my Wyches were there to clear it up.

At this point I spoke to the other Dark Eldar players and it turned out that only Rob, my opponent from game 3, had won 4 and lost 1– like me. At that point I felt the icy fingers of dread..... Rob’s army list was just a simple print off (I had a copy in my bag).... but my printer had broken the day before ToS and I’d had to hand-write my army list in the hotel! I knew that tied top-scores were decided by favourite army votes (which me and Rob tied) and then by the best presented army list.

Handwriting my list cost me the best Dark Eldar player award, but ‘them’s the breaks’. A shame, but next time I’m going to print off my army list well in advance! Congratulations to Rob, his army was really nice and amazingly painted – and I can take comfort in the fact that I (luckily) won my game with him

All great opponents, all fun games. Definitely the best ToS I've been to so far and I can’t wait for next time.

As far as army performance goes, everything worked pretty much how I'd hoped it would. Anything on foot/Monstrous creatures were swiftly taken out of action by the venoms, the Dark Lances gave me plenty of anti-tank (or anti-troop if I REALLY wanted a squad dead), I don't think there's anything I could have changed that would have let me win game 4.

I might experiment with some Hellions and the Baron rather than Wyches - although the Wyches do provide a certain security against dangerous CC units (Mephiston for example).

Oh and if anyone is labouring under the impression that Ravagers are a better choice than Razorwings for Heavy Support - I'd say don't be too hasty. The damage output of a Razorwing is tremendous, having 7 weapons makes them hard to shut down and they're invaluable against things like Razorwing Flocks or large units of Orks (which even multiple venoms can struggle to cut down). The ability to turbo-boost 36'' can pull off some 'out of no-where' last minute objective contestations too. Lastly, though they're only AV10 and not AV11 like a Ravager, they're not open topped and they seem (to me at least) to survive longer because of that.

Nice report mate. Glad to see you had some sucess.

Incidently, I know the pain of losing out to someone who had supieror sportsman scores (similar in principle to what saw you lose out) but it's not too bad when you think it. You can hold your head up high with such good results ;)

Haha, cheers mate ;) - Yeah, for it to come down to something other than how you actually do in the games...

Like you say though - can keep the head up knowing you used the army well (and in my case, had the occasional dose of good luck ;) )! I kept going over the Grey Knight game and thinking ''Could I have snatched a draw''..... but I really think I'd have struggled to even manage that!

Have you decided what you're taking to the next ToS?

Nice report mate. Glad to see you had some sucess.

I reckon my Ultramarines! I just want to finally win the best Space Marines player title!

Had a bit of luck last year but this year I'm bringing Null Zone and a Vindicator, amongst other things. Though must confess I'm not sure whether I want a Landraider or three Troops choices. Decisions, decisions.

Hehe - just make sure to be as sporty as possible and bring a really pretty army list ;)

Do you think 6th will be out before July? I don't think so - but you never know. If it isn't I'll say one thing - there were A LOT of Dark Eldar at ToS, so lance weaponry abounded. Mind you more than one person ran a multiple Land Raider list. I'm actually a Vindicator fan (I tend to take two) - can be quite unpleasant for Terminator armies combined with Null-zone.

Are you still championing the Honour Guard?

Are you still championing the Honour Guard?

Was there any doubt?

I find they enable me to wipe armies off the board in a few games. They generally do something decisive for me most games.

Just updated game four - forgot to include the 3 other riflemen in the guys army! I could have beaten him if they hadn't have been there :P

Well - the Honour Guard seem to be working for you - plus if I ever play someone at ToS who's using them, at least I'll know who I'm up against ;)
