MagicMan
Just using this as a bit of a placeholder, will hopefully get a few more pictures up later. Thought i'd log the squads progress as a bit of encouragement to get them done! Here's my first basic bolter marine to whet your appetite. The first image is kinda crappy.. But im still getting used to the camera, so hopefully the pictures will get better. Wahey, managed to get a better picture of the front of the guy. I think. Haha. Kierdale
The weathering and scratches are very good. Do you mind if I ask your method? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251684-wip-ultramarine-army/#findComment-3052007 Share on other sites
feuer_faust
Nice stuff, although the damage effects and the highlights do seem to work gainst each other in some parts (notably the left knee pad). That said, i do like the freehand work. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251684-wip-ultramarine-army/#findComment-3052036 Share on other sites
Dosjetka
Ah, I think that you used Cosmic's method, didn't you? :tu: I do like your test model, looks good and I've always had a soft spot for Ultramarines. Keep up the good work! Ludovic Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251684-wip-ultramarine-army/#findComment-3052051 Share on other sites
MagicMan
@ Sword Brethren Thanks bud! @Kierdale Hah really? Its my first time trying to weather marines. I basically went over the models adding random scratches with a paint brush in Chaos Black where i thought weathering would look decent, then i went over with Chainmail and painted a small amount inside the black area. :tu: @ Feuer Faust Thanks dude, im not very confident in my weathering/power armour painting skills, but i try to make up for it by adding small details like with the shoulderpads. @ Ludovic I certainly did! Its a great tutorial and i loved the results. Its not as clean as sitting down and going through 5 layers of colours, but its so much quicker, and gives a very gritty result. Thanks for the comments. Well i got two more regular guys painted last night. The one simply holding his bolter across his chest had most of him done as a test marine when i was off work sick, so my hand was a little shaky, and im not entirely happy with him. Especially his shoulderpad. But im putting little touch ups like that on the back burner until i have the squad done. Lachdannan
Very nicely done. Love the weathering and the freehand. Liking how this squad is coming together. Jaigo
Well done, apart from adding my cheers for the weathering, I do like the lenses a lot, and the hightlight on the eyesocket part of the helmet where the lenses are placed is very smooth. MagicMan
Thanks alot for the support guys! Your encouragements have given me the spur i needed to finish off the Sergeant. Luckily it was fairly sunny today. I'd been struggling to get his wrist guard/chainsword finished in a way that i liked, but im pretty happy with him. Originally i had him wearing his helmet, but im better at painting faces than i am Power Armour, and having him bare-headed just made the model look better in general... After seeing the pictures ive noticed a few places that need touching up, so ill get on that. Coming up, the flamer guy, and some WIP pictures... Which have been a little absent from this log, haha. fudblinker
Very nice work, I liked the weathered look on the Ultramarines. Makes me want to give the technique a try! NightHunters
These are some really nice looking Ultra's! I also am a fan of your weathering, and if these are the first you've done in this style well bravo sir, bravo! And excellent work on the Seargent, old head from the Tactical squad with some GS hair? Looking forward to more. FTE Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251684-wip-ultramarine-army/#findComment-3052374 Share on other sites
MagicMan
@ Fudblinker, Thanks! I wasn't sure how they looked tbh with the whole weathering thing, so the positive feedback has been really cool. I'll try and keep it up. @Nighthunters, Thanks a bunch man! I was really pleased with the sarge (Took forever to get his arms like that, they're regular bolter holding arms with some cutting/resculpting) so im glad the work wasn't wasted. And yes good eye! Im not a fan of all the space marines being bald, so ive taken so scultping some hair onto a few of them. Heres what im working on atm, another bolter guy and the squads flamer specialist. Im trying to get the squad looking good in two halves, one will be fire support, one will be following the Sarge in an assault. These two are for his half. And heres the leader of the second half of the squad, the heavy bolter marine. It was such a bitch getting that metal bolter to sit anywhere near right, my advice to everyone, buy the plastic devastator set. Save yourself the pain. Originally i had him with the scout Heavy Bolter, but i think the bulkier one looks better. Just behind him is the squads objective, just a flag with a battered helmet and a few skulls on the base. Im trying to make an objective for every Tactical squad i make. And just because i liked these pictures, a squad in progress shot! Or two. Dosjetka
You do realise that you are slowly but surely pushing me into a situation where I'm going to have to paint some Ultramarines, don't you? :) Darn you and your excellent models! Rogan
Magic Man, weren't you complaining about your "lousy painting skills" less than a year ago? ^^ Great stuff, man, and inspiring. Now I feel the absolute need to buy a metal heavy bolter kit (although I own three plastic ones) and to convert a sarge or two -.- Could you post some small tutorial on how you did the two-handed thingy? Only thing I could complain about so far would be the sarge's right shoulder pad - to my mind, it's set way to deep to "really work". Again, great stuff here! I wish I could challenge you to an Ultra/Ultra sparring oO Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251684-wip-ultramarine-army/#findComment-3053670 Share on other sites
StraightSilver
These are looking very cool, but I don't envy you trying to get that metal Heavy Bolter to fit, I have enough trouble with the plastic ones! I do really like the weathering on these guys though, gives them a really nice realistic feel, and your blue is nice as well. The two handed grip on the Chainsword is also very cool. MagicMan
Thanks for the kind words, guys. Rogan, thanks a bunch. Your Ultras were the ones that inspired me to start. Unfortunately i can't really do a tutorial on how i made the sergeant wield his weapon two-handed... I just sort of smushed arms together in a frenzy of clippers and glue and got lucky. The reason his shoulder-pad is so low is to cover the fact that his arm joins his torso about half a cm lower than normal.. hah. I haven't updated this thread for four months! I almost have those two new marines done. Ive been pretty busy starting a new career in the military, but i do have this to show, and a promise to continue the tactical squad very soon. Ill have two more guys up in the next few days. Anyway, enough blabber, introducing Squad Varus' close support : Ancient Remus He's a bit rough around the edges, construction wise. A few gaps here and there due to him having an unfortunate cat-related accident while un-painted. Ive done my best to hide the damage... As you can see, the cat still holds a grudge. MagicMan
Thanks guys! Well finally got two more marines painted, and a scout! Only four more members of this tactical squad to go... And its only taken forever so far. :) Still, they're shaping up okay, and im in a bit of a hobby mood atm (Haven't really felt like painting in ages, besides the Dread) so hopefully i can crank the last four out. Im trying to find my pin vice, which is why the barrels are currently lame looking. *shrug* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251684-wip-ultramarine-army/#findComment-3237274 Share on other sites
Sh0sen
The paint and weathering is perfect. They look like they've just walked off the cover of a SM Codex. The way Ultramarines should look.
