RebG
Hi all, Transferred these from my blog rather than taking the easy route and linking...but if you're interested, click here Four of us went, I took the Angels Sanguine, our friends Dave and Kai took Iron Warriors and Imperial Guard respectively and Draigowing was taken by Nurglez from here on Bolter and Chainsword (see Insane Psychopath's reports, he's on there). The first thing we found out was that Dave's Iron Warriors had a Bezerker squad, a Havoc squad, 2 Obliterators and 2 Rhinos to get painted up to standard. Not finish them off, completely paint them. So my first few hours at Warhammer World were spent painting. Again. We all chipped in though and got them to a playable standard, it was a good vibe to start the weekend if a little mind-numbing. Fair play to Dave though, he painted until it closed at 11pm (we arrived at about 12:30) and then did another 90mins at the hostel. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eo3dUcn-MAU/T58QNsqyMTI/AAAAAAAAAd0/oiutJl-ASec/s320/2012-04-27%2013.17.09.jpg MORE painting... That night I had a practice against Kai's Imperial Guard - the first time I've ever played against them in a non-apocalypse game - and won; a good start to the weekend. The army list I'd taken was: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DpZfCKw_zxY/T58DNVgS25I/AAAAAAAAAc4/A3jRLnz0Brg/s320/2012-04-29%2009.23.53.jpg I made mucho effort on the display board (thank you GW canteen) Recluisarch 5 Death Company DC Dreadnought 2 x 10 man Assault Squads 5 Devastators (3 missiles) 2 Priests 2 Land Speeders Stormraven Game One on the Saturday was annihilation against Tyranids. He had 2 big Gaunt squads, Tervigon, Trygon, Broodlord with Tyrant Guard, Carnifex, 12 Genestealers and 7 Ymargl (spelling?) I hate Genestealers - I tend to get bogged down by anything more than 5 of then thanks to my now legendary dice skills! http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ifYPIuRRBW4/T58QVqm3c6I/AAAAAAAAAd8/VT8V3uCRajE/s320/2012-04-28%2010-2.11.22.jpg This was a rough game, and a slooooow one. We took almost 2 and a half hours! A bit of a Mexican stand off. His Broodlord and Fex did nothing as I spent the game outmanoeuvring them (basically the half of his army in the left of the photo), although they got close: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cCkP0dzgfDc/T58CkG4sNuI/AAAAAAAAAcQ/_e4_lx7bsOw/s320/2012-04-28%2011.45.17.jpg His Yumgargles came on, as usual, in the Devastators terrain piece: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S0YQSARs3vc/T58CcIn3ErI/AAAAAAAAAcI/oRyjQg7cIvA/s320/2012-04-28%2010.58.51.jpg Those 5 guys held out for three turns of combat until their brothers arrived to clean up. Going into turn 6 we had 5 mins on the clock left and he was winning 7-5. The late arriving Assault Squad finished the last Yamagril and the Raven, which survived the game well thanks to having only two shooting models in the enemy army, blew the back of the Trygon's head off. The round clock hit zero and we tied, 7-7. Game 2 I drew a guy called Alex with his Marines. Redeemer, Cassius, 2 Tac Squads with Rhinos, Pod with 10 Sternguard and 7 lightning claw Terminators. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M6fLmWUGaTk/T58CsfqXKSI/AAAAAAAAAcY/be-qnnLoNio/s320/2012-04-28%2013.20.58.jpg Dawn of war, two objectives. The picture shows my turn one move after I kept everyone off the board for deployment (HQ is in the Raven and Priests can't accompany their squads on). In contrast to the previous game he blew my Raven up at the start of turn two. Thus he unleashed the DC and DCD on his Sternguard. They didn't last long. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kntfMGeKdAc/T58QmuMDvVI/AAAAAAAAAeM/A_veQC7IhEc/s320/2012-04-28%2013.55.03.jpg The right side combat squad in the above pic were the highlight of the game - along with the priest landing in the woods on the right and lost three (THREE!!) Marines, including the priest. The DC then blew up the Pod (the Dread had gone hunting Rhinos) and killed another of the squad. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3m8oS332DF8/T58C0ynSXbI/AAAAAAAAAcg/C9pS9Cd_3A0/s320/2012-04-28%2014.27.07.jpg With two men left they headed onward. Another died to the now-imobilised Redeemer but his surviving friend lived thanks to a marine sized rock and claimed the central objective at the end of the game! I won this game 2 objectives to none (contested). We had a rule dispute but it was all very sporting and was a fun game. It's one of the first game I've really used unit 'synergy' and tried to coordinate elements together and it worked a treat. The heroic Marine was the icing on the cake. Game Three was against Sisters of Battle! Three Exorcists, 5 Rhinos with three Sister squads and two Flamer-Sister-Fast Attack squads and Saint Celestine. 2 objectives, spearhead. I know barely anything about Sisters, or I didn't going into this. I do now. He was another really nice guy but the most tournament minded (for want of a better expression) i.e his objective was in his table corner blocked entirely by a Rhino. The rest was a line of shooting while Celestine floated forward. I was a bit screwed. He really took me apart turns one and two and I thought all was lost. Then I started breaking Rhinos and by turn 5, with a little luck, it'd be a draw. I popped and then broke his advancing Tac squad and took down Celestine. Unfortunately next turn she got back up and an empty surviving Rhino mended itself and picked up another troop. My squad which had headed for his objective (and made it) took a squad, Rhino and two Exorcists on two men. They died pretty fast. Here is my whole army when the game ended: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WYW_SqAp5WQ/T58C9VtSSJI/AAAAAAAAAco/rlxCingx1jI/s320/2012-04-28%2017.43.45.jpg It was a tough game but I think it was bound to be. I'd have to play him a few times to figure a way round it. The Exorcists are brutal as they are hidden behind Rhinos (can't be seen) but can see you as he measured from the organ pipes. Oh well. Loss, 2-0. I'll get game four up this evening, game five probably tomorrow... Hi Reb G - nice battle reports, I think I saw you guys furiously painting away on the painting table :) I know what you mean about it being frustrating when vehicles shoot from behind vehicles, I had a game against Grey Knights where the Dreads were shooting over the back of Razorbacks! Looking forward to reading the rest of the games. Kierdale
Some good reads! Sounds like you had fun (and educational!) games. I'm also looking forward to reading about games 4 and 5 ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251768-more-throne-of-skulls-reports/#findComment-3053094 Share on other sites
RebG
Hi Reb G - nice battle reports, I think I saw you guys furiously painting away on the painting table :P I know what you mean about it being frustrating when vehicles shoot from behind vehicles, I had a game against Grey Knights where the Dreads were shooting over the back of Razorbacks! Looking forward to reading the rest of the games. Hey Scarus, It was annoying as (I guess I should have asked but) I positioned them tucked in nicely, assuming he was shooting from the gunner. Moral is, always ask! No doubt you did see us, there was four of us sharing one pot of paint for about 30mins! Some good reads!Sounds like you had fun (and educational!) games. I'm also looking forward to reading about games 4 and 5 ;) Yep, a lot of learning. Just wished I'd played something a bit different (never played Dark/Craftworld Eldar with my Angels, or Tau. Game four coming up now... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/251768-more-throne-of-skulls-reports/#findComment-3053276 Share on other sites
RebG
Saturday night had been the pub quiz and was a good chance for another beer or two, after that we found out the hall was open for another two hours, until 11pm, so I got a game in vs Dave's Iron Warriors. Two objectives, spearhead. He had Termie Lord and Sorcerer, 5 or 6 Termies, Bezerkers in Rhino, Chaos Marines in Rhino, 2 Oblit's and 5 Havocs and some lesser Daemons. (for my list, see previous post). He deployed quite deep in his corner and set off with the Rhinos to meet my Raven. He got the Bezerkers out to try and shoot it down with a plasma pistol and quickly discovered the disadvantages of facing a DC Dreadnought. The 'Zerkers died quickly. His Marine squad died fairly early on too and I assaulted his objective holing Daemons for a dragged out fight (bloody 5++). I expected his Terminators to come in with the Oblit's near my objective and shoot/charge my Assault Squad off it. He didn't though and brought everything on in his corner, essentially handing me at the very least a draw as he had nothing that could come over to meet me. All I had to do was destroy the remaining Daemons to wipe out his troops, which is what happened. Won 1-0. Game 4 Coming off the spanking from the Sisters I was hoping for a decent game to get me back in the swing of things. I wandered over to my assigned table and saw... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Kz1KgwUxHdI/T58DFTWij8I/AAAAAAAAAcw/djnf7QUAMZY/s1600/2012-04-29%2009.23.44.jpg Templars. Specifically 20 Terminator Templars, 14 of who were armed with Thunder Hammer and Storm Shields. This was gonna be tough. He also had the Emperors Champion, Pred Annihilator and 3 5 man Crusader squads with a Lascannon and Melta each. I wasn't worried about the power armour, I can cope with combat squads no problem. The Terminators were potentially going to be a huge problem though. He set up his 2 squads on close together objectives with his tank in support, everything else would walk on. My whole army waited to come on turn one and respond to where his Terminators arrived. Turn one his remaining Crusaders walked on to the 3rd objective behind some trees and the Termies came on in two long lines. I brought the Speeders and Raven on my right flank flat out and all 3 squads through the centre (onto one of my objectives). http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NxAbbdybeIA/T58Qt-qLBJI/AAAAAAAAAeU/QF5snmkaDb4/s1600/2012-04-29%2010-1.08.30.jpg End of turn two, behind enemy lines. Turn two I put the Raven and Speeders right in his face by flanking and moving behind his whole army, hoping to distract the Terminators from marching forward. Sure enough the Champion and his squad turned back for it, Crusaders shot at the Raven too. The Land Speeders took some damage but the Raven shot a Crusader which meant his whole squad fled from the table! Turn three and I moved into position to shoot and Assault the Terminators with an Assault Squad, the DC and the DC Dread. Shooting killed two and, thanks to Righteous Zeal (which I didn't know about) the squad moved out of charge range of the DC! Buggers. I don't think I killed anyone in the combat and he blew up the Dread and squashed half the squad who thankfully fled. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fTI-bBgrLls/T58Q12zyEzI/AAAAAAAAAec/AwPikCr3xtY/s1600/2012-04-29%2010-1.39.02.jpg This left the DC exposed next turn but also meant his more advanced Termie squad turned back for them (see above). They also died pretty easily once their attacks had done relatively little. The remainder of the previous assaults Assault squad rallied though and jumped through trees to wipe out another Crusader squad. Then then attacked the Terminators to draw them backwards again and killed four through shooting and combat!! They all died in return but it was a worthwhile tactic. After a rubbish start for me it was now one objective each. and he had four Marines who could claim left. The other, undamaged Assault Squad had entered and combat squads so they moved to go and hold both of my objectives. He continued to pour fire into the Raven and blew off the Assault Cannon, Multi Melta and one Bloodstrike Missile over a couple of turns, nothing more though. I moved it in to contest his only held objective incase the game ended. I now was in a winning position - 2-0. I started to think I could actually win! The game continued though and the Raven died. Back to 2-1. His Terminators moved and ran for both my objectives (he didn't roll less than a 4 for run all game, it was annoying!) and it was clear it'd be close. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--mo1qd6WFXc/T58RY7uphtI/AAAAAAAAAe8/hBwQ32tjB1E/s1600/2012-04-29%2011.19.14.jpg By my turn 6 he had only two Marines left on his objective and if I stood still at mine I was clearly going to be attacked by 13 Terminators in turn 7. Not good. The squad in the picture above held fast on the off chance they could take down another 3 before getting splatted or if the game ended. The other combat squad though went after his held objective after the Devastators couldn't kill them and the Raven was gone. Turn 7 did happen and his Terminators, true to form, killed the guys in the above picture so I was now losing 0-1. I assaulted but rolled poorly for my charge through cover and only three Marines got into combat range. Between them they killed one and lost none. The lascanon Crusader of that squad the only model denying me the win at the end of the game. This was THE single most tense game of 40K I've ever played. sweaty palms and a bit of adrenaline coming and going. My dice let me down a few times (anything involving moving or charging through cover was a 3 at most) and he had some luck (especially with runs). But I didn't dive in and think I did well at outmanoeuvring him where possible. I kept one Terminator squad and the Champion totally out of the game apart from a single, fruitless assault on the Raven which was a good idea! A good game though against a tough opponent with a nasty army! Game 5 should be up tomorrow along with some general Warhammer World bits and bobs. Doesn't happen often - the thinking part that is...
