2000pt Fleet engagment

Had my first game of gothic in over 4 years yesterday. My Local GW said we could have a game on Bank holiday Monday.

 

2000pt cruiser clash in deep space.

 

I took

 

3rd war of Armageddon fleet

 

Fleet-admiral onboard the royal oak

 

Ark Royal Oberon class Battleship Ld 8

Iron duke Avenger class grand cruiser (reserve) Ld 8

Royal Oak Mars Class Battlecruiser Ld 6

Hood Armageddon class battlecruiser Ld 9

Resolute Lunar class cruiser Ld 9

Conqueror Lunar class cruiser Ld 8

Dreadnaught Gothic class cruiser Ld 8

1st response squadron 4 space marine swords Ld8

2nd response squadron 1 space marine sword, 3 space marine firestorms Ld9

 

My opponent took a bastion fleet

He had something along the lines of

Admiral with extra reroll

2 Armageddons

2 Mars

4 Lunar

1 Dauntless

 

I had the Ark Royal, Dreadnaught and swords on my left angled slightly into the board

The two lunars and the Armageddon formed a triangle in my center (Armageddon at the point), with the Iron Duke and the Royal oak to the right and slightly behind.

 

The firestorm squadron took the far right with the plan of sweeping behind the enemy line.

 

My opponent spread his fleet out evenly across his deployment zone with the dauntless opposite my firestorm squadron.

 

Battle plan

Keep up a steady stream of torpedoes as I close. Ark Royal and dreadnaught to cross the T with the Royal Oak. Whilst Hood, Resolute, Conqueror and Iron duke get within knife fight range and lock on.

 

Turn 1

All fleet elements move forwards, Ark royal and dreadnaught angle towards the center and the second group angle towards my left.

Royal Oak scores a hot with the nova cannon and causes 2 points of damage to its target.

All torpedoes launched as is a fighter screen

 

My opponent moves towards me, with the dauntless going after my flanking firestorms.

Iron duke loses 3 points of damage to a nova cannon, second cannon scatters

All torpedoes taken down my fighters.

 

Turn 2

All torpedoes reloaded

Firestorms close to within 15cm of the dauntless

I start to realise that my fleet elements are getting a bit close together.

Firestorms cripple the dauntless.

Swords, Ark royal and Dreadnaught cause a few points of damage to one of the left hand cruisers

 

Enemy close even more and begin to turn to bring broadsides

Torpedoes destroy the sword escort screen.

The sword and one firestorm form my second squadron are destroyed. Hood takes a few points of damage

 

Turn 3

All fighters recalled and bombers loaded in both Royal Oak and Ark royal.

Remaining firestorms swing behind enemy fleet

Rest of my force starts to cross the T.

One enemy ship is reduced to a burning hulk, a second is crippled.

Point blank torpedoes deal little damage, but do destroy one of my remaining firestorms.

4 bomber squadrons were placed infront of 2 enemy cruisers

 

The enemy tries to reposition to retaliate but can’t bring their broadsides to bare, in addition a failed order results in no torpedoes being reloaded.

The two cruisers received minor damage from the bomber packs

Concentrated fire destroys hoods plasma drive and she explodes. The close proximity catches 3 enemy cruisers, Resolute, Conqueror and Iron duke in the blast.

 

Turn 4

Failed first order

Carried on my push into the enemy fleet

Another enemy cruiser explodes

 

Realising that I am focusing fire the enemy admiral orders full speed ahead and rams his way out of my fleet. Causing 4 points of damage to Royal Oak and suffering none in return.

 

The rest gets blurry.

 

Iron duke gets hulked as does another enemy cruiser. There is at least 2 more plasma drive explosion. One caused by a point plank lance shot from the remaining Firestorm, which doesn’t survive

 

The dauntless rams the Ark royal, dealing 3 points of damage and is hulked. The last two enemy cruisers disengage.

 

Results

 

Ark Royal 3 damage taken

Iron duke Hulked, awaiting salvage

Royal Oak 6 damage taken

Hood Lost with all hands

Resolute 5 damage taken, fires still raging

Conqueror 1 damage taken

Dreadnaught 2 damage taken

1st response squadron Lost with all hands

2nd response squadron Lost with all hands

 

I capture 3 hulks

 

We discussed the game and decided that my focused fire brought me the day. It resulted in me rarely having shields due to the close proximity of each other and moving into existing blast markers. Iron Duke rarely had all its shields up.

 

I also set up the fleet to easily turn to bring the broadsides to bear.

 

We had fun and can’t wait for the next game

No idea.

 

We only got to play since it was a non peak day.

 

We are allowed to play on Tuesday evenings, but school (work for me) means I can;t get out week day evenings.

 

Hopfully I can get a game in within the next few months. I want to buy an entire marine fleet, rather than just a few escorts.

Ebay is your friend. I just picked up 12 chaos cruisers for the princely sum of £20 delivered! painted as well :)

 

Where are you from? I live in Shrews and work in Wolverhampton (will be working in North Wales in a month) I'm always happy to play a fellow BFGer if you're local?

 

I'm lucky, most of my mates play Warhammer and all of them have BFG (guess that's why we're friends)
