Black Templars 2012 AoP

Recommended Posts

Alright well after a while away from 40K to play Fantasy and then some time away from the hobby entirely, I have been coerced by local friends to compete in this years Armies on Parade.

So I plan on doing around 30 models or so.

The list looks something like this.

Marshall in Terminator Armour, converted from Arjac Rockfist

5 Sword Brethren Terminators

Emperors Champion

Contemptor Dreadnought

20 Initiates

10 Neophytes

So that's so far, I may add more or take stuff away depending on time.

Since I work 60+ hours a week it'll be a slow progress and since this project is with the intent to win and push my limits as a painter, I'll be lucky to finish 5 models a month!

Anyway tonight I just spent clipping out some of the bits I've collected for the 20 initiates and the Contemptor. All the models will be converted and I'll not be using the Black Templar sprues. We're going for a classic 3rd ed look.

I also built a mock up of the Contemptor's base.

They're going to be based on floating tiles like Ben Komet's Sanguinary Guard base.

I linked the reference photo's since I don't own the rights.

Now if anyone has suggestions for painting black, I'd love to hear them. I haven't tried the new GW paints but have the full range of the old ones.

Anyway, I'm off this Thursday so I'll be building the bases and begin prepping all the miniatures for assembly and painting. Hopefully the Neophytes all arrive this weekend.

Cheers!

Alright guys, today I've built the Contemptor Dreadnought and most of his base! He has a little more basework and some cleaning to do and he'll be ready for painting. I'm also going to start working on the Emperors Champion today! :)

Enjoy!

Well here's another update! I'm making progress!

Tonight I sat down and began the sculpt and conversion of the marshal. I left a lot of blank space for freehand work and other details. The sculpt is still rough and needs to be finished but it's at coming along.

I also got 6 of the Neophytes and am prepping them for stripping!

Cheers mate!

The fine cast resin was so much easier to work with than I expected! I was worried it'd take to much time to file off all the space wolf icons and clean him but it ended up being so simple!

I even lost some detail I wanted because I over estimated the toughness of the resin! But Im pretty happy with the result, I may just have to convert another model out of this guy sometime!

I've always enjoyed your work, MCA, so it's good to see you back. :tu:

That said, I'm not sure I'm too convinced by your Arjac stand-in. I think it would look more appropriate with a different head, or perhaps even helmeted... and that shield doesn't scream Templar to me at all. The Master of the Watch's shield could look really cool, or maybe another cross-pattern style. I know you easily have the painting talent to change my mind, but as of now in these early stages he still looks very feral. Where's one of the Emperor's Dark Knights that we've come to love? Imperator Vult.

I hope it doesn't come across as offensive, because you've still done some great work reshaping the model. The tabard looks fantastic, as does the hammer conversion.

Well I'm glad to see your following! :)

Don't worry, I assure you once I start painting Arjac he will impress :)

But to add to it, I built a second Marshall tonight out of random terminator bitz that hopefully meets your approval!

And here's the horde as it stands now. 6 Scouts, 20 Marines!

And no worries Darth, there's no offense between friends!

Cheers!

what is the head on the resin termie from?

didnt realise how big the contemptor dreads were O.o

also i think the resin guys TH would look better if the head was rotated slightly, closer to horizontal, i think it would make the swing look more realistic

He's an example of Like Father Like Son ^_^

The head is the head that is already on Arjac. I felt like it made for a grizzled veteran.

I didn't realize how big he was either but I like it!

And the hammer head is fickle. The resin on the shaft isn't very strong so it warps bad. I may have to dissassemble it again and run a rod straight through to keep it angled.

I have to second the statement that the shape of the shield on the arjac to marshal conversion just doesn't seem to work. Can you provide some inkling as to how you're going to make it sufficiently templar-y?

I haven't knocked anything out as far as freehand or anything yet. I may make a change, but it'll come about at paint time!

On another note, the force is growing slowly.

Got the 5 terminators built, also got the models to do 5 more marines and an EC as well as 6 scouts and then this nice box.

Sealed in its original wrapper :cuss

Hopefully I'll have the generic marines built tonight. I bought a molding kit and plan on casting the bt torso's so I can have several as well as the oop scouts to have enough for a full force! :D

The Munny in the background is another new project! I finally found a local store with them! ;)

Definitely agree! I didn't know they were still in a sealed box when I bought them on eBay either! I'll have 15 of the old metal scouts and should be able to cast at least another 15 from this sealed box!

I only managed to get 6 marines built and the Emperors Champion conversion tonight, but I'll show what I have anyway.

These are my 3 favourites, the others are pretty generic.

And the Emperors Champion. I used a Plasma Pistol instead because it looks better! :P

Alright, next Saturday there is a painting contest at my local GW. I haven't participated in about a year due to bad judging and annoyance, but I figured I'd make a surprise entry. So I decided to paint this terminator I originally built as a Templar test model.

I'm using the Dark Sons scheme on him.

Pictures don't do it justice, but the white is finished, green is now awaiting weathering. :)

Base also got finished and primed. Tomorrow, I hope to get the Halberd done and base started! ;)

Alright so after the meeting this morning I came home and started working on the base of the model and finishing him up.

Base is now completed and he is down to touch ups and the force weapon.

So enjoy!

Well I decided to pull an all nighter tonight because I got off work at 1am and had to be back at 6:30am. So I sat down and started cranking out the Dark Son Terminator for the painting contest this weekend. He is now 100% finished for the contest. Anything else I decide to do will be next week on him!
