Wolf Lord in SW Army lists

I've been debating adding a wolf lord on tw mount to my 2k list. However most of the lists I've looked at omit the mighty Wolf Lords entirely and go for either another RP or additional troops.

Hence my question that I'm posing: in the matters of HQ choices in SW armies, exactly how useful is a wolf lord?

In my opinion, a Wolf Lord with a Thunderwolf mount is an exceptionally destructive force.

I've recently begun using mine with a Frost Axe (essentially just the stock Deathwolf model with a head swap and a storm shield.)

I've played 4 or 5 games with him against some of the guys in my shop and hes very tough to kill.

I'd reccommend it if you have the points, but bear in mind it weighs in at around 250 points fully kitted out (can't remember the exact number and i've left my codex elsewhere.)

Heres what I take with mine:

Wolf Lord

Thunderwolf Mount

Frost Axe

Storm Shield

Melta Bombs

Saga of the Warrior Born

2x Wolves

Hope that helps, Mike.

Mathematically speaking, the Wolf Lord at 100 points loses head to head against both the Rune Priest and the Wolf Priest in head to head matchups. The Wolf Lord needs to be upgraded heavily in order to properly fill the role he specializes in: bludgeoning force in close combat.

The Wolf Lord at 100 points even loses in a direct head to head matchup with a single 50 point Thunderwolf Cavalry. :)

Both mike and guardian are right, as a bare-bones HQ you can do much better, but properly upgraded he is a real heavy hitter. Fortunatly you are trying to use him in a 2k list where such upgrade costs are easilly justified. Other then that, from a fluff perspective you can't do much better then your fearless Wolf Lord leading the pack into glorious battle.

I was amazed at what you can bring to the table if you don't bring Powerful HQ choices. This was a friendly 2K game and I know the list isn't competitive, but here's what I had:

Wolf Priest, WTN, Jump Pack

WG w/ Jump Pack and 2x Powerfist

10 Skyclaws, PF, MoW, Melta

Long Fang Pack

2x Laz Cannon

3x Missile Launcher

Razor Back TLLC

There were jugheads running around everywhere. Lots of fun! (Oh, and I was wrecking faces everywhere - Skyclaws just need good timing to be effective).

If you are willing to go over the base cost of a wolf lord, his importance can multiply a hundred-fold. He works best in lists that are wanting to run TWC as it is, so he has buddies to kill with. It's like going fishing alone, you can do it but after an hour of drinking all of the beer yourself, you say :) the fish, I'm hitting the bar. I degress... I also think that WL and TWL are more fluffier, more full of fluff, whatever. While the RP has that flavor, it's power level (is over 9000...) vs it's point level is just better suited for tight lists minimaxing every unit. Of course I am not saying the RP is bad, far from it. At 2k try out a lord and a priest, you have the points for it for certain.
