which terminators to get?

I am looking at improving my army with a squad of terminators, and I am stuck between which ones to get, from what I see

'Standard' Terminators

Pros:

ranged weapons, especially an assault cannon give flexibility

power fists are great to deal with big monsters, and as they usually have a higher initiative you would usually hit 2nd in combat anyway...

Cons:

Not as specialised as an assault squad

Assault Terminators

Pros:

More attacks due to 2 CCW

Lightning claws re-roll to wound

Thunder hammers are brutal

Storm shields for invulnerable save (btw is this 4+ or 3+?)

Cons:

Lack flexibility, so if they are not in close combat, they are wasting points, although if they are in a LR the result would be the same....

However, with a priest/libby, wouldn't the assault terminators be overkill?

What do you guys think?

Storm Shields grant a 3++ save.

I guess it depends on what part of your army you wish to augment. If you want a mobile firebase then go for the Tactical Terminators. If you want to go for a rock in assault (or rather the makings of a rock in assault), then go for some Assault Terminators.

Another question to think about is what "force multipliers" do you have available to run with the squad (should you choose to)? Depending what you have, that could tip the balance.

theres no point adding a priest to l/c, you cant reroll a reroll.

I'm taking 5 normals in a storm raven.

Their job is to hunt support units, think basilisks and devestators, or contest objectives, shifting 5 termies from rubble is unlikely to be fun, and 5 storm bolters, perhaps with an ass cannon or a missile launcher too, means they can raise havoc from inside that cover.

If you want to kill an enemy hq, lib/cap and 7 combat terms is one way to go

Priests grant Furious Charge and Feel No Pain, neither of which grants a reroll to wound.

Why the Stormraven for a Tactical Terminator Squad? As long as they are in a Stormraven they aren't shooting the enemy whereas if it were packed with a squad of Assault Terminators then you could use the Stormraven to it's strengths and get that squad into combat faster.

This in itself is another question: Do you have a Land Raider Crusader or Stormraven in your army? Only these are arguably needed to best deliver Assault Terminators.

Not sure what you mean by this, but a priests gives the squad furious charge and feel no pain. He gives them no sort of re roll. Maybe you are confusing a chaplain or reclusiarch? Even then, they grant them re roll to hits, not re roll for wounds.

As for what terminators to get, I would buy assault terminators if you get any at all. Tactical terminators will be mince meat due to all the low ap weaponry out there. 5++ save isn't much and 40 its is a lot to invest in something so fragile. If you put a libby, sang priest, and 5 assault terminators in the same squad, they are a solid unit. The librarian can cast Unleash Rage while the sang priest grants them FC and FNP, they can be quite nasty. Of course, now you have to invest in a transport to ensure these guys get into battle. I prefer the SR over the LR but it is all preference.

I think that there are three variations that are any good.

1) 10x tactical termies with 2 cyclones or assault cannons. (this is the only one that I would ever combat squad)

2) Assault termies in some sort of transport. All except the godhammer are good but different. remeber that you need two SR, or LR in any army to be effective

3) 'thunderbubble'. 8-10 TH/SS termies walking across the board, in front of your mech as a bubble wrap / dangerous tar-pit.

Anything else can be good, but i feel that these are the only competitive ways to run termies.

Hmmm I'm going for the 'standard' 5 man terminator squad plus assault cannon, mainly to fulfil the roll of 'objective bolsters' (i.e. giving a ten man taq squad in a rhino a teleport homer, zooming there and teleporting them down to help hold it.

That said, they can dual role as monster/vehicle killers.

I think they are more versatile than assault termintors (in my opinion) which I usually have to field in a large squad + Character to get their points back.

indeed, i messed up priest/chaplin

And indeed the chaplain/lc rules. Chaplain rerolls to hit. LC rerolls to wound, so a chaplain is an excellent combo with termies, although a librarian is better, as you get to reroll every turn with unleash rage.
