Starting / Assembling Space wolves

Hey guys!

So with the upcoming release to the Warhammer 40k 6th edition, I decided to start my own 40k army! I play Dwarfs in WHFB and I decided to play Space Wolves in 40k. So up to now I have, 5 terminators, 2 Space wolves packs, lord on wolf, Arjac and Lukas.

I'm going to magnetize the terminator weapons. As for the marines, I was going to build them as Blood Claws. Now what weapons should I use to build the blood claws. I know I should max out on the chain swords and include at least 2 with melta guns (which apparently I have to buy separately)... and what else?

Note that I don't know anything about the game and how it is played (I'm waiting for the release first)! What should I buy next? I have the codex as well and a Rhino I think.

I appreciate the help guys thanks a lot!

Hi and congratulations on your army choice!

First of all I would strongly advise you to use your Space Wolves packs to build Grey Hunters instead of Blood Claws. GH are currently one of the best troops in the game, with strong abilities and upgrade options. Blood Claws need maxed out squad to be effective, and then you'll need Land Raider Crusader to get them into the fray fast. Grey Hunters are much more flexible. You can make two squads of 9 GH, meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen + Wolf Guard with combi-melta and Power Fist and put them in rhinos (which should be your next purchase). Note that you need to field minimum three Wolf Guard, which means third squad (Wolf Scouts with melta are good here), or Terminators. Beside Rhinos the best purchase would be a squad of devastators to model as Long Fangs, and a Rune Priest, but this one can be made from leftover bits.

And from my experience Dwarven bits fit perfectly with Space Wolves ;) Good luck!

Not sure you can be given a true answer/opinion. You said you're waiting for the release of 6th edition before playing, but the truth is, no one knows when that is yet... not to mention when it arrives, it could easily be that Blood Claws are the new favorite for GW.. or even still, meltaguns and rhinos will cease to exist in the new edition.

Point is.. we can't advise you on what to get/build based on the lack of knowledge anyone has regarding the 6th edition rules. If, however, you want suggestions for the current edition, we can certainly oblige, and Mimir's suggestion was pretty spot on for an "all-around" composition, minus the rhino. Never EVER buy a rhino. The rhino chassis kit comes in the razborback/predator/vindicator/whirlwind boxes, so always buy one of those and magnetize (or sticky-tac or whatever works for you) the additional sponsons/turrets as needed.

Wulfebane is right, buying any other Marine vehicle kit is the only way to go. I must've had a moment of insanity to suggest a Rhino :P He's also right about 6th edition, we really don't know how our units will be balanced after change in rules. Hopefully Swiftclaws and Skyclaws will be more useful (Swiftclaws can be useful even now, but YMMV :)
Ah ok well I'll assemble them into Grey hunters then! :) Right now I'm having trouble with GW because of the Arjac model. The first one had a defect which was beyond repair and the replacement they sent me had the exact same thing..... Jesus. Next I'll buy 2 more boxes of space wolves packs, and I will definitely be buying the thunder wolves because I like the models and I want to use them!

magnetising wolf guard is a great plan, and not just your teminators, id recommend magnetising the wolf guard who are goign to act as pack leaders too - as i find that altough most games ill take them with powerfists, other games i may drop a fist for a power weapon or mark of the wulfen.

I wouldnt bother magnetising grey hunters though, well, maybe the special weapons, but i pretty much play 100% melta guns :)

As folk have said above too, use 5th edition for now, 6th may not be out for at least another year, and even then, i doubt theyll be bringing out a new SW codex anytime soon!

Well after some reading and thinking I decided to start by converting some priests. Up til now I've come up with these two which are still WIP

I'm really liking the posing for both those guys - the 1st guy could even be either a Wolf Priest or Rune Priest haha

just to let people know - especially you Mr Hellfoot - the key new stuff coming out in 6th will be DA, Chaos and Eldar (don't quote me on this though as I'm not a rumour-monkey), no idea about contents of 6th Rules - but is likely due autumn/winter this year or early next  so plenty of time to game in 5th beforehand <_<

Agreed, great job on the two models that you've put together - well done!

I expect 6th Edition to come out in July - but we'll just have to see if that rumor pans out, or not. Either way, the Space Wolves themselves won't get a new codex or new rules for a very long time, I expect. However, even with no new codex, fundamental changes to the baseline rule-set will undoubtedly affect the Space Wolves, and will impact which units are considered to be efficient and effective, and which units are not. Dramatic changes to how Assaults work, for example, might make Blood Claws much more worthwhile in the future than they are now. We just won't know, however, until we've had the new rulebook in our hands (for a few months, and for a few dozen games). Regardless, I wouldn't expect that there will be such drastic changes that our bread-and-butter units will be hit with the preverbial "nerf-bat", so you are probably more than safe in assembling those now.

Since you are new to Space Wolves, and new to 40K, you may want to check out my guide to army list building, that is in my BnC blog (the link is below, in my signature block).

Best Regards, and welcome to the Fang; I think you'll like it here.

Valerian

cheers guys thanks alot for the help! Right now I'm working on my color scheme. My replacement nozzle for my airbrush just arrived so I will be busy with painting :)

For tanks... what kit/kits should I buy?

firstly - don't pretty much ever buy Rhino's purely because you'll save money by buying Razorbacks and not gluing the guns/roof hatches on - thus you gain both a Rhino & Razorback for the price of 1 :)

I am a big fan of Predators and Land Raiders, I know there's a guide somewhere about magnetizing preds, especially useful if you want to switch between lascannons and heavy bolters.

I'd deffo suggest getting a few (2-6) Land Speeders, build them how you like as it'll depend on your playing style, some use them as fast tank hunters with heavy flamer/multi melta combo, others use them as fast support with typhoons.

All in all have a nosey at valerian's guide (very useful) and then decide based on what you like :)

I completely agree when buying new kits, but don't forget that you can often pick up dirt-cheap Rhinos off of eBay, so ensure you check there first, and a particularly good deal on one is going to over-rule the advice to "always buy a Razorback instead".

Thanks much.
