I'm not entirely certain what you mean by squish mold. If you could clarify that you might get more answers. Gurth
I think what is meant is a press mould: a mould you press putty into so you get a cast. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252508-squish-molding/#findComment-3063144 Share on other sites
greendestiny
Thanks Gurth that is exactly what I ment. I read an article on BOLS about it and was thinking of using it to make some shoulderpad molds for my Red Wolves SM army that I am working on. Grotsmasha
Lamenter has an excellent guide using 'Blue Stuff' on his website, www.masteroftheforge.com. There's one on shoulder icons and one on how to use blue stuff. red_starrise
I use instant mold for this actually. But I do the IF drop pod icon, trim it down & glue the fist to the shoulder. ShinyRhino
The problem with press molding is that you're attempting it on a curved surface (shoulder pad). Trying to press out a flat design onto a curved surfce never ends well. You're actually better off creating a mold of the entire pad and simply filling the mold with putty. Ron over at From the Warp did a wonderful two-part series on the trial-and-error process he used to make custom shoulder pads: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2011/10/my...nd-casting.html Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252508-squish-molding/#findComment-3063535 Share on other sites
greendestiny
Thanks for the info Brothers! After doing reasearch on the sites you sent me to I don't think a press mold will work for shoulder pads. The symbol needed for Red Wolves is the same as the Ragnar company shoulder pad on the SW sprue. Since it is fairly difficult to track down the Ragnar pad I think I will just go ahead and make my own mold of the pad and cast it with two part resin. I've had really good experiences with casting small parts with rubber molds using the two part resin in the past so it should be good. I am planning to still make a press mold to get more symbols for flat surfaces, just not for the shoulderpads or other round surfaces. Thanks for your help and I will keep you posted on progress. Sincerely, GreenD Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252508-squish-molding/#findComment-3064035 Share on other sites

Sincerely, GreenD If that is the case, go on ebay & pick up a couple drop pod SW icons. Then press mould very thin. After it's cured cut around the wolf head to remove the diamond shape from behind it. GS is flexible enough if you use super glue & hold it for a bit it should stay curved on the pad. As I said this is how I do icons on my IF since round decals on a curved surface can be frustrating as all get out.
