Army of Heroes - Iron Snakes

Recommended Posts

You may remember a while back I was working on an Iron Snakes army in this thread, it was by far my favourite 40k project but I always felt that I wasn't doing the character and individuality of the chapter justice in the standard of modelling or painting of the army.

What I've decided to do this time is to take an entirely different approach, I want every model to look like a true hero of the Imperium, and for each model to have his own unique heraldry and battle honours. In order to ensure that I stay focussed on them, I am going to work on this force one model at a time, so each model will be individually converted and painted to my best standard before I start on the next one.

To that end, I present to you the first of my Army of Heroes - Battle Brother Arcadius:

I've not yet started to work on the GS elements for this model, but this is a mock-up of his pose. The shield and spear are both blu-tacked on for now, so I can continue to access the model until I start to paint it.

I know everyone will be keen to know, so I'll start by saying that the torsos were not sculpted by me, I commissioned them from a fellow board member - Sioka. He's an excellent sculptor and I'd recommend his work to anyone.

I hope you like the direction this project is going, and I look forward to hearing your critique, feedback and support.

Thanks very much for the feedback guys, really appreciate it!

I'm still unsure about whether to put bolters onto every marine, food for thought.

Here's the only official piece of artwork of the Iron Snakes from the Black Library:

You can see there are a few details I can take inspiration from, particularly the backpack and the small shield icon, though the marine is literally festooned with little details to inspire my conversions. With that in mind, here's an update on Battle Brother Arcadius:

Small snake detail on shoulderpad, I've also started to sculpt some waves on the bottoms of his legs:

Hope you like how it's going so far, very open to any suggestions you may have so I can keep improving the mini!

WotF.

Think I'm happy to say the Green Stuff is done for this one, unless anyone has any suggestions?

I think this is incredibly awesome!! The thought of going all out heroic on these Space Marines kind of speaks to me! I like it alot!

I humbly just want to add that a roman crest would suit him good... :P

Keep posting these fine gentlemens and ill sure will keep looking!

I couldn't see it properly in the earlier set of pictures but in these last ones the snake in the shoulder pad trim is much clearer...and very impressive! Love it.

When I first heard of the Iron Snakes I thought the name was very cool. It's great to see someone making them, and taking the time to do it well, too!

That's a great start WotF. If it were my mini I'd fill in the GK inscriptions on the legs, or certainly the 'unholy' one at least. What does the other one say? Never really seen the IS as all that 'religious' myself...

The other thing is that there are still mould lines visible in those photos, be a shame to ruin all that hard work with some lines still poking through. Right foot, near the 'lip' of the right knee line, the hand holding the spear (especially when front on in that first, excellent, photo), possibly the left foot and near the crest on the left hand side of the helmet too, hard to tell from the photos.

Otherwise :)

Cheers for all the great feedback guys, I'm gonna go back and rescrape all the mold lines so I'm sure he's all clear.

I'm not going to be able to undercoat him today because it's 28 degrees, and I'd hate to make a mess of him before I've even started on the paint!

Glad you guys are enjoying the project so far, I can't wait to get onto building the next model, but rules are rules and I'm sticking to my guns with these guys.

All killer, no filler.

:D

Love it so far - there's actually loads of other artwork of the snakes though - check out the old Warhammer Monthlys if possible, there were a few different stories in there (I think that may have been where they first appeared, in comic format - Petrok is featured heavily).
