Imperial Deceit
What other paint brands do you use? I personally like to use the Army Painter sprays to put the base coat on my models, especially when painting hordes ('Nids). I just give it a once over with the Skeleton Bone and then I only have to touch up the details I want. Or Dragon Red for my Angels, saves a ton of time waiting for base coats to dry, and always gives a nice even layer to start off. I am also a fan of Reaper's matte coating for applying transfers. Olis
Vallejo's paints are pretty good (love those dropper bottles) and Cote D'arms paints are wonderful for getting a hold of paints that are the same a citadel's 90's paint range. I'd also recommend P3 (who also use the dropper bottle design) - their armour wash is certainly a highlight. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252724-other-paints/#findComment-3066235 Share on other sites
ShinyRhino
I'm 100% Reaper Master Series for paint, and GW for washes (though I've not tried the "new" formuations yet). All three are nice quality paints with similar characteristics. I also use the cheap craft paints for basing and terrain, but not for minis. Imperial Deceit
I have looked at the Vallejo paints (with envy) but unfortunatly they don't have a distributer anywhere near me. GumbaFish
P3, vallejo game color, vallejo model color, vallejo model air, reaper masters series, and tamiya for their clears. Gurth
Let's see if I can name them all off the top of my head … Tamiya, Revell*, Humbrol*, Testors, Vallejo, Rackham, Gunze-Sanyo, and probably two or three others that I have only one or two bottles/tins/etc. each of, but of which I don't recall the names right now. Moral of the story: don't limit yourself, but try out different paint brands to see if they're any good, then use the ones that are. Bigger moral: this does not just apply to paint B) * Enamel paints as well as acrylics. Imperial Deceit
I already do that with my terrain pieces, screw GWs 5 trees for $40... I got a forests worth from Wal-Mart for 49c each. They were those little trees for Christmas displays, left over after the holidays. Also I love using textured spray paints for quick basing. Rust-oleum makes a good series, and Velspars metal effects series makes excellent terrain pieces. red_starrise
It depends really. I use GW washes, P3 & vallejo for detailing but for colors I use en masse such as black I tend to use the cheap craft paint like apple barrel & ceramcoat because they're cheap for bulk color & with a touch of pledge with future shine it cuts them quite nicely & eliminates that heavy, overly thick problem they tend to have. Pig Of Sparta
I've only recently looked outside of the Citadel paint range but I highly recommend Vallejo. Price wise they're cheaper than Citadel, they're colour matchable to the 'old' Citadel Colours and the eye-dropper bottles are great too. I'd love to try P3 because I've heard nothing but good things about them... I've also used a couple of Army Painter sprays for basecoating and they're pretty good too. cheers James Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252724-other-paints/#findComment-3075331 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Yup Vallejo, Game Color, Model Color, Coat D'arms, Tamiya metallics, Tamiya acrylic sprays, Humbrol grey primer (this stuff is a steal, its the cheapest price, but gives a lovely flat coat of primer - best I've ever bought), Citadel washes, and pretty much every Citadel paint ever made (plus I'm working my way through the new ones ;p).
