Hi folks and welcome to my WIP.

In this challenge, I plan to make a 10 man Devastator Squad, armed with 4 Plasma Cannons, and the Sergeant armed with a Plasma Pistol.

Challenge updated, see posts below

These boys will be from my Redeemers Chapter, created using the Codex:DA. Their colours will look like dis:

I'm starting from scratch, so I will need these:

which looks like this! (we all love full sprues don't we?):

After a solid night of cutting, trimming and blue-tacking, here's where I am. I have a few robed Marines which will make for good sergeants in my army.

Here's the pics:

Plasma Cannon Marines, without the Cannons.

I used Blue Tac for the arms and heads. Makes priming easier. Things will slow down a bit, as I trim the weapons, drill out the barrels and prime. I plan to paint in the respective groups, Bolter, Sergeant then Plasma Cannons.

More to come soon!

  • 2 weeks later...

In the last few days, my pledge to the Challenge has changed. I'm now working towards a half battle company.

The miniatures above have been re-assigned to different squads. They are still unpainted except for the 5 below. This has now become the first of 3 tactical squads:

I added a banner and Melta Bombs to the Sergeant

I started painting the first 5 minis, Sergeant and 4 Bolter Marines. The one model without a torso will be the Missile Launcher Marine.

Here's a picture of what's waiting to be done:

Front row: Dev Squad

Second and third rows: beginnings of the other Tac Squads

Back row: Assault Sergeant.

As you may have noticed, I'm particular in how I build my units. Dev Squads will have the tubed torso, Tac Squads will have winged skull/skull and bones torso, Assault Squds will have Eagle torso and Skull backpack.

It's the OCD in me.

Stay tuned.

PS - Blue tack is the best stuff in the world. It's so helpful if you decide to change your mind mid build!

Here's the first half of the first Tactical Squad:

Then the entire unit, half painted half primed.

They're a little sloppy right now, I'll touch them up when the whole unit is painted.

I'm doing something new, painting in sections, so it's a slow go for now.

But I've been building stuff tooo....... ;)

Enjoy

That looks like a promising colour scheme. Do I spot correctly that the robes will be the same grey as the torsos?

To start, but will highlight them slightly lighter.... Kind of like getting a paint and a fabric to match. Will be off just a bit

June 8/2012 update:

First tactical squad 85% complete. Still need to touch them up, do the base and decal. Should look good when done.

Taken with flash to show the Grey of the armour (and how much work is still to be done!) ;)

Without flash to show how dark they are.

Should be 100% by the end of the weekend, then I can do the Dev Squad!

Here's the updates for my vow:

2nd Tactical Squad, 3rd Company: Sergeant

Tri-Plasma goodness:

While not quite 100% done, it's time to move on to the next squad. Still have lots of work to do before August 15th!! Here's what's left:

2 more Tri-Plasma Tac Squds,

1 Plasma toting Assault Squad

1 Quad Plas Cannon Dev Squad

Stay tuned!

Thanks Stobz!

I'm not the best at taking pictures. Any advice? The models are darker than the pictures would indicate, the flash really lightens up the grey (and shows what glossy bits need to be matted down!).

I got a couple of Assault Squad boxes today and will start putting them together.

I may add to the vow, to give myself a chance to change things up... maybe more robes!

You need to get a second light source, and take the pics from just above the models head height looking down.

That probably means you also need to get a bit of paper for the background. The setting affects the cameras' light balancing etc. While I'm no expert I've gotten better throughout my log through trial and error more than training.

If the second light makes it too stark, get an old large (A4) photo frame with glass still in and insert a piece of paper to use as a diffusion 'box' between the lamp and models.

More robes FTW!!
