Dark Sons Terminator

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, this is my first finished miniature in 2012 as well as my first competition model in over a year!

I'm entering him in a local painting competition at our lgs.

Well I decided to pull an all nighter tonight because I got off work at 1am and had to be back at 6:30am. So I sat down and started cranking out the Dark Son Terminator for the painting contest this weekend. He is now 100% finished for the contest. Anything else I decide to do will be next week on him!

Let me know what you think!!

I'll take better photo's next week once I reset my light box.

C&C!

Magnificent

The only little piece of criticism I have is that he looks a lot like a Dark Angels Successor Deathwing Terminator (dark green and creamy-white). But then maybe the Dark Sons are Dark Angel successors ;)

Are you planning on painting any more Dark Sons?

Cheers mate! Glad to see another old face! ;)

I'm not sure any background on the Dark Sons, I built the Terminator to test painting Templar's on and heard about the competition and asked a GW staff to pick a chapter! ;)

He's just a one off model, unless I get commissioned for more! lol

I really like the model and your paintjob, but the halberd doesn't reach the quality of the rest in my opinion. I guess it would look better if the pole would differ from the blade in colour. But apart from that, very impressive.

Looking excellent! ;)

Great job!

The only tiny critique I could give is that the tyranis head looks unfinished, maybe some feathered highlights?

Cheers! Hard to tell in the pictures but there are fine feathered highlights at the edges of the panels ;)

Hopefully when I retake the pictures all the little details come out! :)

Pretty cool basing, so cool it actually overshadows the (cool as well) mini a bit.

Much appreciated :) what would you add to bring more attention up to the mini? Taking parts off the base equates to time

I don't have, the solution is only to add to the mini!

Thanks. The halberd was a last minute decision to change the colours. I had the staff painted and the trim painted but couldn't get the look I wanted on the blade so I opted into the metallic blade with blood splatter to break up the monochrome tones of the halberd.

Unfortunately as you said it means the entire thing is two different but similar colours.

At this point though I can't go back and repaint the blade or the handle.

Looks awesome - a great painting lesson in DA colours ;). Talking of which, are these new GW paints or old or something else?

Shame he's a one-off... you gotta do at least one squad ;)

Cheers

Thanks! I used to be a huge DA player back when 3rd edition came around. With the newest book I can't even touch them! Lol

As far as paints go, I own a handful of the new paints and used them entirely for the armour. The chips are done with chardone granite skull white and chaos black. The Metallics are Tin bitz boltgun metal Mithril silver and umbral umbral from p3.

Blues red and parchment and skin are all old paints.

:cuss

And maybe I can be convinced to do a squad or something ;)

You're welcome, actually as Nightspaw suggests painting the halbert's blade in a spectacular way might be a solution to bring more attention up to the mini. May be like Grey Knights' force weapons but with green tones rather than blue ones. But it's just a suggestion.

The base is way overdone.

Ironically 95% of the base is sitting on a 40mm base.

I'll play with it and see what happens.

The blade will probably remain the same but the shaft can change.

I think the skin tones and metallics are absolutely top notch, if I had to critique it would be that none of the armour has any sharp edge highlights.

That might well be a stylistic decision, but I'd expect it of a competition standard paintjob, and it's generally the style space marines are painted in.

Don't want to sound too critical because I think it's a great model and paintjob, but I think it needs that extra highlighting to make it truly magnificent.

I appreciate the comment :)

Some of it is the pictures but your right, I strayed away from a lot of harsh edges highlights.

It was a main problem for me making it look right on the green and it's definitely something I'd like to work on.

The white/bone has a lot more but again it's hard to tell from the photos.

The skin was sheer luck that it worked out and the Metallics Im fond of washing with umbral umbral which has a great green tint to the brown which works well with boltgun.

one of the best mini's ive seen in this forum, matches the artwork perfectly! Great job!!!

Cheers! I've never seen their artwork! lol

It's the first I'm hearing of it. Last I heard, they were one of the blank slate Chapters. Color scheme, name and emblem, but that's it. But it's possible. Would like to be able to check it out. By the way, great mini.

I ment more the whole space marine artwork, they are never shiny and polished. It is generally heroic, gritty and powerful
