Scouting the way

Well they're probably not my best - they are very rushed and incomplete - and ~gasp~ there are sprue and mold lines showing... but these are my newest conversions for my wolf scouts.

Running shooting, about to slice with a backhand held power sword

Sneaky, scouting the way - still needs his wolf skin cloak with wolf head - need to twist his hand and spear a little to make it stand straight!

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/scout3_motw_2.jpg

Snarly, jumpy, scratchy while wielding a ridiculous battleaxe (that any self respecting dwarf would give his left golden nugget for) as a ccw

Then I have a question. I had planned on running a 6 man scout squad like so:

6x WS

2 with power weapons, 1with MotW

Then 1 with melta maybe or should i rather just give the whole squad Melta Bombs?

Then I was thinking of adding a Wolf Guard to them from my WG squad

1x WG

PA, (MotW or frost blade or claw or fist?), Bolt Pistol, Melta Bomb?

I think the cloak is off the old chaos warriors or marauders. It was part of a bits bundle I traded.

Still need to add some GS to clean up the models.

Any idea's on the load out ie. Melta vs Melta bombs for squad - and how I should run the WGPL to get the most out of my 6 man squad?

MG's are always nice.

I always run WGPL as BP/Fist, even though this is not ideal for many others.

It's consistent shooting, that adds to the pack, matches nicely with WS packs, since there's no BG in the pack unless it's an upgrade.

MB's for six guys? That's some points to set aside, if you're both willing and have them.

I always run my Scout pack Wolf Guard with either a Thunderhammer or Power Fist plus a Combi-Melta.

Valerian

Two questions:

1. Where is that axe from?

2. The bodies are simply scout torsos/legs with different arms and heads added?

1. Two orc choppa's and a wolf skull make up the head, a beastman spear and wolf tail the haft.

2. Yes, although the legs are chopped, pinned, reposed and gs'd to clean up

Surely the thunderhammer is an expensive fluffy toy compared to the x2 strength attack the power fist gives?

It's only 5 more points, which isn't much of a price to pay for the additional stun ability. Also, it looks cooler.

And the next 3 scouts are taking shape...

From left to right:

This is WOLFTIME ; The BladeMaster ; Techno Viking

I really like the way my "This is WOLFTIME" kicking badguys off cliffs, wolf claw ccw guy turned out

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/this_is_WOLFTIME.jpg

And the 6 man squad... now need to do the WG leading them to wolfy glory and then its going to be GS time to clean up, add fur and hair etc.

Great minds think alike :tu:

Btw, I love the use of Tau Kroot shoulderpads - when I was making my scouts, I did not have them yet. Got them later for my MoTW, Plasma pistol+Storm Shield Lone Wolf project.

Eep!! Thread jackers!!

Fetch me my comfy pillows!!

Have at you! I say, have at you sir!

No no, I kid, wow there were a lot of exclamation marks there. Nice work there, one day I will paint too. I'm thinking of a more grey/grey/blue than the regular baby pastel blue that most SW have. More like a mix between Pre-heresy and the current. Will probably try achieve that with grey undercoat, some asurmen blue washes etc.

Small update - not much time, but hopefully will finish up the GS work next week and then start painting

Added some fur to his shoulders and hands, still not sure how I will integrate his meltagun

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/techno_viking.jpg

Just giving him a furry shoulder mantle with paws and claws

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/scout2_vanilla_3.jpg

Added the wolf skin arms, now need to do the rest of the cloak and the wolf head - might try press mold the head off a wolf model or off Njal

wow,

those are some awesome conversions. I dont do much conversion work meself but am currently working on 10 scouts so might have to get a bit of green stuff and give some things a shot ^_^

on the MG vs MB topic...id always take a meltagun instead, if only for the fact that it allows you to pop a vehicle, and then charge whats inside if it happened to be a transport.

Wheres your Wulfen looking dude from?and your GSing skill are really good -_-

Looks like sm scout, beastmen, chaos marauder and fen wolf/wolf rider mount bits.

I was opting to keep it to myself, but since I'm commenting already, I have one small critique on your scout w/ the arms. Don't get me wrong, your GS skills are awesome, but those arms look too big to be a wolf's, even for the largest thunderwolf you could find. I think it would suit better to claim/paint them as an ice bear or something along those lines.

Despite that, I love the dynamic actions you've captured w/ these conversions.

Exactly right :) - plus zombie hands, and 2 orc choppa's for the axe!

Too big for a thunderwolf? You think so?, I mean thunder wolves are frikken huge, plus this is the de-furred wolf, the pelts always look a bit bigger on account they are flattened / rolled out. I was actually inspired by this image:

http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/3/3e/The_Blooding.jpg

and this in terms of size, notice the size of the legs and paws and head etc. its preetty beeg!

http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/1/14/Wolf_Guard.jpg

I actually thought the pelt would have been for a juvenile thunderwolf and not one of the monster mounts.

My GS skills are beginner, fur is particularly forgiving, I find just taking your time and drawing / thinking it out before starting is the best way. Thanks for all the commendation and encouragement though.

Another small update - my clients are wrecking my timeline, no ways I will be finished this week - eish!

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/scout2_vanilla_4.jpg

Added the cloak and the wolf head and the back paws - need to clean up the head, finish the ears, the tail and the rest of the pelt on the back... but its shaping up very nicely.

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/scout_group.jpg

Added some furry bits to them all.

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/wolfguard.jpg

And started my Wolfguard Pack Leader - just need to find an old style backpack with the wolf heads on them, they are not in the boxset!!! why GW? why?

These are some nice looking pups :P

Have you considered just making your own wolf headed backpack? Just cut the vents off a standard pack and replace them with the wolf heads from the power armoured thunder hammers, which most wolf players should have quite a few of.

The backpacks are sold by GW here:

Update time

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/scout2_vanilla_5.jpg

He's complete in wolfy outfit... not sold on the inside of the ears, need to shave that and redo it a bit I think.

http://www.blankds.com/40kimg/blademaster.jpg

Blademaster now with Horns of Power... I guess they are trophy's, I think it gives him a menacing, slightly ominous look.

Found someone local who has some wolf bits to trade to me - including the backpacks with wolf heads - so should get that next week and finish these boys up.

I did consider making my own wolf head backpacks, I have some molding kit left over that I could use to press mold the back of the thunder hammer then make some GS heads and apply to backpacks... cheaper, quicker and less fuss to just buy em though.
