First time topic, Please give me Criticism. Still have not perfected bleach bone painting large empty areas, need suggestions, tips on that. Also how to paint weathering on metal armor. As always For the Lion!

I was very excited to dive in on this project and knocked it out in just a few days, although he's not completely finished, I thought I would go ahead and post some pics to get a bit of criticism and a suggestions for his lower left shin guard.

I'm using the chassis of an AoBR Dread as my starting point for Venerable Brother Azdiel, Praetor of Felled Angels

Here he is with his sarcophagus. new shin guards and random gear.

Like I said i got this done fairly quickly and didn't take pics of some of the more mundane painting. so here is without any(much) shading or highlighting.

This is where I am now, There is a lot of cleaning up to do, and the left shin guard is empty and needs something to be painted in... Suggestions?

Azdiel Irons in finished! Here is the finished product with possible touch ups later but over all I'm happy. Still criticisms and tips for improvement would help me out a lot. Thanks

This is my first contribution on this website, and more importantly, my first contribution to the 1st legion. Thanks to Semper for answering my questions. Since I finished quicker than I originally planned I have decided to make another vow.

I farfromsam answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete a ten man tactical squad, with flamer, plasma cannon, and a sgt with a power weapon, plasma pistol, and meltabombs from Codex: Dark Angels of total value of 220 on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to the mighty war gods of the first legion and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end. - farfromsam

I spent the day assembling them. Meet Dropsquad Bezet.

Unlike the rest of my army (excluding scouts, terminators and assault marines and brothers who wield weapons that may ignite robes) they take to the field without the iconic robes of their brothers. Shamed after failing to reach an isolated band of their brethren before being over run by orcs, squad Bezet foregoes all but the fastest means of transportation, the drop pod. They shall know no fear nearly rings hallow for squad Bezet. Perhaps not fear but a constant anxiety of arriving late ensures they are the first to the fray. This often means into the maws of the enemy in an attempt to take the place of the doomed, isolated brothers they once failed. Redemption is landed one drop at a time.

there they are, minus the plasma cannon! Here we go again.

Again I'm new to painting, any suggestions or comments go a long way. FOR THE LION!

Welcome to the forum Brother Sam, and congratulations on being first amongst the Legion to complete his vow first! Your dreadnought looks great (I'm a huge fan of dreads!) and there is nothing I can see to offer other than to drill holes into the multi-melta. Other than that, looks amazing!

Squad Bezet is ready for action! I'm fairly pleased with how they turned out. Still unsure what company colors I want to give my army hence the bare pads. Regardless, 220 to the unforgiven!

First the WIP picts.

You can see my first attempt working with green stuff on the left shin guard. Lol got a ways to go.

Here is sergeant Bezet and brother Heman with the Auspex. The sergeant's sword is my first swing at giving the sword a lightning effect, tips? I can't recall where I got the pack for Heman but a metal pack on plastic was a pain to glue to a base.

Let me know what y'all think. Squad Bezet got knocked out quickly... they still need a painted transport... incoming drop pod!

Here's the start! I really need help deciding the colors for the icon, it is bleached bone now, unsure of what to do with it lol

Well this took me far, FAR longer than expected. It is my first attempt at large scale freehand and it shows, but I'm pleased for a first try. shown in the picture above, I started with bleached bone doors and black frame. I then outlined the sword and wings in pencil and painted black around the outline, then green over the black.... Does anyone have any suggestions on a different technique that I could have used that would result in cleaner lines? Either way Squad Bezet has its' ride!

Here is a collection of all my previous completed Vows.

http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh501/farfromsam7/IMAG0276.jpg

I think it's about time that I make another vow, This one has more "character...

“I farfromsam answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete Asmodai (Interrogator Chaplain) from Codex: Dark Angels of total value 120 points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to the Dark Angels Chapter and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end”

Asmodai it is! Again let me know what suggestions you have on improving freehand work on vehicles, any links to guides would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah nice DP and good freehand! Maybe when you do the pencil outlining use a ruler(if thats the right word), to generate more straight lines? But respect for doing such a big FH, id fail on that! -_-

Another stupid question...what is the advantage of using DPs? Just the fact that it can deep strike even if mission dont allow deep striking?...Well when i go play my first games again with 6th edition i geuss im gonna be beat by my friends :)

Thanks for the compliments guys I was starting to doubt the results. Not any more! also Brother-Chaplain Nemiel, the ruler is a great idea! wish I would have thought of that! As for why use a Drop pod, half (rounding up) come in first turn, deep striking, and do not suffer deep strike mishap (unless it goes off the board) as to why use one? I generally use them for Dreadnoughts since otherwise it's a long walk. Same goes with high priority targets you want to have get into the fight.

Any way, I spent today painting up Asmodai.

http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh501/farfromsam7/IMAG0277.jpg

I primed the body up white and arms powerpack black, as I was about to glue the sword arm I realized I had a chance to personalize him a bit. So I converted up the helmet from the Ven dread pieces with wings from the ravenwing box to create a fallen's helmet with head still in. An idea I completely ripped off of the Venerable Candleshoes and his ETL, No Weapon So Savage. ( http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=246565 ) It may be heresy to not have him wielding both weapons but I plan on finding a way to have his P Sword packed up.

Anyway

http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh501/farfromsam7/IMAG0278.jpg

Asmodai is finished up! Glory to the 1st! Glory to the Emperor! Glory to the Lion!

The backbanner is a little off but my freehand is still a WiP. Without further adieu

http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh501/farfromsam7/IMAG0283.jpg

I'm still uncertain about how I feel about the Fallen's head... suggestions for improvement?

http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh501/farfromsam7/IMAG0284.jpg

Small chapter freehand- suggestions on how to hide the paper flaps?

There he is finished up! New vow inc shortly!

farfromsam:

Is it too late to comment on the heavy plasma gunner? He is one striking figure; the gun itself is incredibly detailed. From the freehand to each wire being individually colored, the detail is awesome.

In regards to the drop pod, I'm not sure what you mean by, "It is my first attempt at large scale freehand and it shows," unless of course you mean it shows you're a natural. I'm really feeling the need to try some freehand.

Lastly, removing the sword from the small Ravenwing icons and attaching them to the helm is utterly brilliant. The freehand on Asmodai is a joy to look at.

I continue to be inspired...

Finylcut thank you for the kind words! Means even more after seeing your very refined work. Your highlighting, crisp white bike wings and the detail on the power fist lead me to believe you must have a bionic painting hand. Any way (OH! Looking forward to viewing that 2nd speeder once its' complete btw) anyway again, the idea for the ravenwing icons on the helmet are pirated from Candleshoes' "No Weapon So Savage" thread seen here but I agree, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after realizing how simple and well it looks!

Again thank you! :(

  • 4 weeks later...

Well it took me much long than I had expected but I finished.

Anyway finished my 6 bikes, 1 MMAB, 2 plasma guns, sgt with a Power weapon/MMgrenades for 320 Points. Got to try a little battle damage on the Sgt. and had to dismember a biker after I discovered the old metal satchel plasma I had went missing. Any way here she is my fifth vow.

Right now I'm debating on whether or not to pledge one last small vow... perhaps a single model? Perhaps the HQ from the AoBR in a successor's colors? I Dunno, Let me know what y'all think. I'm sure I would be able to finish, and we have a long way to go to be "First"

They look great farfromsam - excellent work there! The deep red of the bolters is really to my liking and the two-headed eagle? an excellent touch! I also like the basing - I sure hope you expand it to the rest of the squad.

Just remember to declare your completion to the official thread adding a link to this one! Also I'd advice to be conservative - make another vow only if you are 100% sure you'll finish on time - else or your previous work will be for nothing!

Thanks Isiah, thanks C.S. on the basing I was on the fence about it only because all of my other D.A.'s are on based on Flagstone. But I suppose it wouldn't make much sense for bikes to be speeding through a monastery either, even if they are Ravenwing. ;)

farfromsam:

Excellent work on the Ravenwing. The two headed raven... looks a bit... mutated. Your use of extra colors from the Codex baseline really adds so much to the squad.

I still need to review Candleshoes' "No Weapon So Savage" thread, but thank you for pointing me that way.
