General Eggs
I've been playing 40k for a while, but my wallet is small and so is my army. I've finally saved up some money to buy some termies for my army. I want to field a Rune Priest in with a squad of Wolf Guard. Can I do this? Or will they have to be fielded separately? --Eggs Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253192-hq-questions/ Share on other sites

General Eggs
Ok, that's great :D If I put him with terminator in a squad of Wolf Guard termies, would they be able to get the benefit of having 5 members in the squad and having a heavy weapon? --Eggs Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253192-hq-questions/#findComment-3072213 Share on other sites

WG Vrox
If you are thinking how do I get 5 Wolf Guard and 1 Rune Priest in a Drop Pod. consider putting 4 of the 6 in PA so maybe 2 of the WG are in Power Armor and 3 + Rune Priest are in Terminator armor. You would then have 5 WG and can take a heavy weapon if that was your goal. Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
A common practice in SW builds is to add a Wolf Guard in power armor to your Grey Hunter packs. You could think of it this way: Drop Pods hold ten models or five in TDA. Take four in TDA equiped how you like them, make sure to give one of them your heavy option (I recommend the Cyclone Missile Launcher) Then in the same pack take as many power armor WG as you need to fit into your troop units (the common load out is a combi-melta and a power fist). Then since you have a spot open in the drop pod, put your TDARP in with his buddies. Drop in the Drop Pod and let loose the wolves of war!! General Eggs
I'm not going for putting them in a drop pod, I'm just trying to save points for other units and money. I normally reserve drop pods for only dreadnoughts anyway. However, as for what Arez said, how would Runic Armour be better for a Rune Priest than TDA? Same price, but with the Runic armor, you keep your combat grenades in Leu of the 5++ from tda. Valerian
However, as for what Arez said, how would Runic Armour be better for a Rune Priest than TDA? Instead of TDA, for the exact same points, you can equip your Character in Runic Armour. With RA, you'll have the same 2+/4++ saves as TDA, but will have the following additional advantages: 1. You'll have an additional attack in close combat, because you get to keep your pistol. 2. You get to keep your grenades. 3. You can still conduct a Sweeping Advance. 4. You get a 5+ save against Psychic attacks. 5. You only take up one slot in Transports. 6. You get to ride in all transports (I.e Rhinos and Razorbacks). 7. You can select a Thunderwolf Mount (Wolf Lord and Battle Leader only). The advantages to taking TDA over RA: 1. Grants an Invulnerable Save for characters that don't already have one. 2. Models in TDA will probably look cooler. EDIT: I originally made this list when discussing a Wolf Lord, who had a Belt of Russ, hence the 4++ Inv Save (same goes for Wolf Priest); a Rune Priest doesn't have that, so one advantage of TDA for him would be the 5++ Inv Save that it provides. Wulfebane
1. You'll have an additional attack in close combat, because you get to keep your pistol. Wouldn't that stay the same since stormbolters are 'assault' weapons? Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
1. You'll have an additional attack in close combat, because you get to keep your pistol. Wouldn't that stay the same since stormbolters are 'assault' weapons? no, because the storm bolter being an assault weapon just means you may launch an assault after you shoot it (which termies could anyway, being relentless and all) the only way termies get the +1 attacks for close combat weapons is if they double up on the weapon type (say 2 thunder hammers, power fists or wolf claws. the first 2 are crazy expensive though) WLK Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253192-hq-questions/#findComment-3073203 Share on other sites
Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
I didn't see 'TDA looks cooler' on your list Valerian??!! Sorry General Eggs, I miss-read your question. My two cents are that the amount of hate thrown the way of the Rune Priest, having an invulnerable save, albeit only a 5+ is better for those pesky las cannons et al. Of course I am more often than not keeping my RP back with some Long Fangs, or in cover with some TDAWG holding an objective shooting LL at anything that moves!! Getting him in a rhino/razorback and then into hth is something I hardly ever do. If he died, I would loose all of hit shooting goodness, and I'd be sad... :D End of Line Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253192-hq-questions/#findComment-3073285 Share on other sites
Valerian
1. You'll have an additional attack in close combat, because you get to keep your pistol. Wouldn't that stay the same since stormbolters are 'assault' weapons? Being classed as an Assault weapon has nothing to do with it; you have to have either a pistol or an appropriate CCW in your off-hand in order to get the extra attack. That's one more thing that makes Njal Stormcaller exceptional; he is the only character in all of the Marine armies in 40k that keeps his pistol while wearing his Runic TDA, so he gets yet another attack in close combat. Edit: I didn't see 'TDA looks cooler' on your list Valerian??!! Fixed above, fair enough. Here is to hoping that 6th edition makes TDA more worthwhile, again. Its your army, etc etc, so you can play fluffy or to win (at least in most cases), but sounds like your initial idea of putting a rune priest in a pod doesn't keep your usual opponents in mind, as fun as it may be.
