odd wounding scenario

hello everyone, i'm normally a black templar, but my gaming group consists of a Grey Knight player and Tyranid player, and i want to know how to resolve a certain situation should it come up, because they are running the models for this to happen. i'm going to put the scenario as simply as possible to not over complicate things

1 Tyranid Warrior with Bonesword and Lashwhip

2 Grey Knight Paladins with Nemesis Force Swords.

They're in close combat together. If the warrior manages 2 wounds on the paladins, and they fail their invuln saves, normally two of them would go onto one paladin and kill him. however, the boneswords make it complicated, because of the way they can inflict instant death. If the paladin fails the first leadership roll from the wounds (thus being instantly killed), does the second wound caused stay on him and go away, or does it go to the other paladin, forcing him to take a leadership test as well?

I believe that in this case it's just 1 Paladin, as the boneswords state you need to take a leadership test if the model suffers one or more unsaved wounds, which means it the Instant Death doesn't happen until after the wounds has been allocated to a model.

Now if the Paladins were uniquely equipped, one wound would have to allocated to each Paladin, and if they failed their invulnerable saves, each would have to fail a leadership test.

if all of the paladins are the same, then two would have to take wounds (which they failed) and then two would have to take leadership tests. if they were armed DIFFERENTLY the process is still the same. there really isnt a way around with the wounds to try to avoid losing two models to the bone swords. It is just a sad fact that bone swords are super good at killing things when there is a lash whip around.

The rules appear to disagree with you.

Once you have determined the number of unsaved wounds suffered by a group of identical multiple-wound models you must remove whole models as casualties where possible. Wounds may not be 'spread around' to avoid removing models

I agree with Morollan and breng. Allow me to list the rules as I think that they apply :

- Roll to-hit (BRB, Pg.37) - no arguments here, right?

- Roll to-wound (BRB, Pg.38) - no arguments here?

- Allocate wounds (BRB, Pg.39) - in the example cited I see nothing which differentiates one model from the other, so I'm assuming that they form a single group of identical models.

- Take Saves (BRB, Pg.39) - rolled for as a batch, because they are a single wound allocation group

- "Once you have determined the number of unsaved wounds suffered by a group of identical multiple wound models, you must remove whole models as casualties where possible. Wounds may not be 'spread around' to avoid removing models.", BRB, Pg.26, Units of Multiple Wound Models - this is where the two unsaved wounds must go to a single model in order to "remove" it, and this prevents the wounds from being spread around to multiple models.

- "In addition, if a model suffers one or more unsaved wounds in close combat from a Tyranid with a bonesword, it must immediately pass a Leadership test or suffer instant death.", C:T, Pg.83 - only when both wounds are applied to a single model of the group can the underlined portion of this rule kick in and upgrade the wound or wounds to "Instant Death". But it too late to redistribute the wounds to multiple models.

That said, I do think it was meant to work the other way - upgrading the wounds to Instant Death in order to trigger the rule :

"If amongst the unsaved wounds there are some that inflict instant death, the player must first, if possible, remove one unwounded model for each unsaved wound that causes instant death, and then proceed as normal", BRB, Pg.26

But it will need an FAQ to clarify, something which probably isn't forthcoming with the imminent release of 6th.
