Byzantine Space Marines

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't go down the Roman influence for Byzantine Marines. The Byzantine empire didn't really come into being until the last 200 years of the Roman empire. By that time, Roman arms and armour had changed. Instead of a gladius, the Roman legionary carried a spatha which was a longer blade and instead of the lorica segmantata (which was only in service for about 250 years) they wore lorica hemata (ring mail). Also the scutum (the shield) and the helmet had changed. The latter period Legionary had more in common looks-wise with a Norman knight.

Maybe looking at Turkish or Ottoman warriors would better represent the Byzantine influence you are looking for.

Would anyone have any suggestions as to how I can go about modelling this onto my marines?

I've thought of giving every marine a helmet crest, however that seems a tad redundant

Note I will be giving each marine a gladius (more or less), to set them apart.

Well, I can't help you too much with the modelling part. But...

If you love Eastern Rome, here is a book that I really loved reading: The surprising life of a medieval Empire

Juddith Herrin wrote it and it is delightful.

Seriously, read it!!!!!!! ;)

You could probably get it from your Library if you can't get books cheaply :)
