ShasVa
[summary] Name: The Protectors Gene-seed: Ultramarines Colours: Deep Grey Homeworld: Gaira Speciality: Various Strength: Unknown Battle Cry: "Strength and Honour!" [Origin] The Protectors are a Loyalist chapter that were founded sometime during the 24th Founding. [Homeworld] The chapter's homeworld is Gaira, a fertile and ordered civilised world, in an otherwise hostile solar-system, located in the Galactic North-East. All other planets in the system save for Gaira itself cannot support human life for numerous reasons, from the existence of dangerous predatory lifeforms, to elemental and/or galactic phenomena. Gaira is home to the battle-brothers of the Protectors, as well as a non-Astartes human population of 12 billion (at last census). Gaira's fertile landscape and environmental stability remind some of the tales of Terra's far-ancient beauty. Not only that, but the civilisation of the planet thrives and is vastly well-ordered. On the largest and central continent of Gaira, atop Mt. Teratto, lies the Aldor Spire, the chapter's Fortress Monastery. The structure can be seen from the furtherest edge of the continent, shining across the entire breadth, symbolising it as a beacon of order and calm. Deep within Mt. Teratto are the Catacombs of the Rested - those battle-brothers who fell in battle and have been interred here, their noble deeds engraved into their sacred tombs. Other planets in the solar-system of note: * Quatrex is the Forge World of the chapter - a barren planet used by the Mechanicus there for the research and development, and eventual testing, of new or rediscovered technology. * Allomnis is a hostile, multi-environment planet. It is home to many predatory forms of life, all of which do not take kindly to human presence. The chapter uses the various enviroments of Allomnis to train their new recruits. * Impervision is a research station the size of a planet. It has since become a sizeable defence station, armed to the teeth with multiple offensive and defensive armaments. * Cyron Zero: Outermost planet. Uninhabitable dead world. The Absolute-Zero temperature combined with a temporal-stasis anomaly emmitted from the planet cause all that enter its atmosphere to be frozen in both space and time. * Pyrene: Innermost planet. Uninhabitable due to massive heat, recorded to be even greater than the star of the system. Such is the temperature that even the living metal of a Necron ship is turned to gaseous vapour within milliseconds of entering close proximity. [Organisation and Combat Doctrine] The Protectors, having descended from the Ultramarines, adhere to the Codex Astartes, and as such their organisation structure is largely the same as its parent chapter. They view the text as a guide to war rather than dogma to be strictly followed without deviation. Although each and every marine in the chapter knows the Codex Astartes like the back of their hands, they are also taught the benefits of thinking for themselves - to look beyond the obvious and work out the answers to a situation without textual guidance, for one day this might just be necessary to survive. [belief System] The Protectors, like their parental and most of their brother chapters, venerate the Emperor and Roboute Guilliman as exceptional and exemplary men, rather than deities. Although they know the truth about the Emperor not being a god, they willing keep this from the populace, believing that even hope and faith can be a weapon against the forces of evil. The chapter believes in the worth of mankind, and has great respect for non-Astartes who display courage or genius in the face of overwhelming odds. Likewise, they are not fond of any chapter who shows utter disregard for human life, like using civilians as human shields or viewing them as collateral damage. The Protectors have a tolerance for certain xenos, but only to a very limited extent. They are willing (albeit with reluctance) to work with races such as the Eldar or the Tau, in order to defeat a common enemy. When this enemy is defeated, the Protectors simply leave as if they were never present, as they find the idea of turning on their one-time allies distasteful. [Gene-Seed] The chapter's gene-seed is that of the Ultramarines, and as such has no inherent defects on the genetic level. [Recruitment] The Protectors recruit from their human population on Gaira. They pull potential recruits from most walks of life, and show preference to potentials that display heightened skill in a particular field (working with machinery, logistics, fighting skill, etc). The Triium Trials are the chapter's way of determining which recruits have the strength to survive and eventually become a fellow battle-brother. They consist of three sub-trials; Rudimentum Corpus tests the strength of body with intensive exercises and sanctioned fights, Rudimentum Mentis tests the strength of the mind through training in tactics and strategy, and Rudimentum Animus tests the strength of spirit via the chapter's high-ranking Librarians. [Chapter Relics] The items listed here are sacred to the Protectors, being either created at the dawn of the chapter itself, or confirmed to be ancient technology from mankind's Golden Age. The Protectors take care to protect these treasures, but do not shy away from bringing them to the battlefield. * Storm, Thunder, and Lightning: Two weapons and a suit of armour, created and fashioned not long after the chapter's founding. Only the Chapter Master of the Protectors is sanctioned to wear them. The two weapons - a sword and claw, were inspired by and modelled on the same weapons used by the Emperor of Mankind. Meanwhile, the suit of armour is Tactical Dreadnought Armour with integrated Storm Shield plates, providing very-resilient protection. * Invictus Maximus: The designation given to a Contemptor-pattern Dreadnought found by an AdMech exploration team, and reactivated on the chapter's Forge World of Quatrex. The Dreadnought is only taken to war when the situation is dire. Invictus Maximus has numerous defensive armaments that allow it to withstand virtually anything. PorridgeMeister
[Origin]The Protectors are a Loyalist chapter that were founded sometime during the 24th Founding. I would recommend that you expand this - not very detailed? Although each and every marine in the chapter knows the Codex Astartes like the back of their hands, they are also taught the benefits of thinking for themselves - to look beyond the obvious and work out the answers to a situation without textual guidance, for one day this might just be necessary to survive. How does every marine know the CA off-by-heart? According to the Storm Wardens fluff, it is quite rare for even one marine to know it all, it being a substantial tome. Codex: Blood Angels anyone? Why do tolerate Xenos? Explain this oddity in detail. The chapter's gene-seed is that of the Ultramarines, and as such has no inherent defects on the genetic level. Sensible choice. The Triium Trials are the chapter's way of determining which recruits have the strength to survive and eventually become a fellow battle-brother.... This kind of thing is already in place (according to 5th Ed Codex). How can it be modeled after the Emperor's gear if the Chapter was founded in the 24th? And how would they do it at all? * Invictus Maximus: The designation given to a Contemptor-pattern Dreadnought found by an AdMech exploration team, and reactivated on the chapter's Forge World of Quatrex. The Dreadnought is only taken to war when the situation is dire. Invictus Maximus has numerous defensive armaments that allow it to withstand virtually anything. Back for more later. Be sure to check out the BB Code page. They seem fairy bland and generic so far - literally in the case of their colour scheme. ShasVa
I've been thinking today about revising my DIY chapter entirely. I've got some ideas for it but it doesn't really fit the theme of the Protectors here. This new chapter may be: - a descendant of the Iron Hands - influenced by certain Xeno Hybris and Xenarite elements - possibly have something to do with Delphan Gruss' quest for the Omnicopaeia (undecided on this, although the chapter will be lovers of technology regardless) All just ideas at the moment. Although the idea of a chapter being significantly influenced by the AdMech/Xeno Hybris/Xenarites has a lot of potential *cough*HERESY*cough* :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253497-the-protectors/#findComment-3079195 Share on other sites
ShasVa
So I was thinking more on the new chapter idea today. Half on the fluff, half on the houserules. Fluff wise... I think it would be better for them to be descendant from the Iron Hands, due to a) their love of technology, and B) the Xeno Hybris/Xenarite influence within their chapter. I can live with them being hesitant of organics and instead favouring bionics and cyber-upgrades, but I'm not too sure about them out-right hating weakness personified. Perhaps if the weakness in whatever isn't inherently obvious? I dunno. Only reason I mention the Iron Hands is because I doubt a successor chapter of the Ultramarines would love technology and allow Xeno Hybris/Xenarite influence. Correct me if I'm wrong though!? The chapter, like the Iron Hands, would favour bionic and cybernetic augments to their bodies, going so far as to becoming entirely mechanical (save for their brains). They would also favour some rather unorthodox methods of battle, which could piss off more traditionalist chapters. Among these methods would be replacing the Autocannons on Predators with Battlecannons, and lowering squad size to allow all applicable squads to ride inside Razorback transports, among other things I can't think of right now (still working out how to make "Techno Psykers" work w/o turning them into "Imperial Crypteks"). Despite the Xeno Hybris/Xenarite influences (as well as the AdMech), I doubt the chapter would use actual xenos tech. Rather, they'd use weapons and equipment reverse-engineered from recovered xenos tech. Mostly this would be from Tau and possibly Eldar - Necrons may be a bit of a stretch if they phase-out when irreparably damaged. Chaos tech would be outright forbidden (heretical, dangerous...take your pick)!! Their battle prowess would be cold but logical. For example, while they would despise organics and most likely not interact with the populations they'd be liberating from aliens of daemons, neither would they blatantly cause harm to such populations either, unless deemed absolutely vital (if Exterminatus is required for instance). At the same time, they would just do their job and leave, and neither would they pay much (if any) attention to local politics unless it would be a threat. Essentially, the chapter would be "Mechanical Astartes" - the closest thing to actual AI robots.
