Musings on Land Raider purchase

Dear Team,

GW have a big fan in me, but this year's price rise is the straw which has broken the camel's back; I'm having one last splurge to complete my Company and then (aside from the 6th starter set (DA dependant, but I will want a rulebook from somewhere) and the odd DW unit (again, new DA dependant)) I'll be pretty much calling it a day purchase-wise.

I don't own a Land Raider, have never felt like it would fill a hole in my force, and had always just assumed I'd get one eventually. However, in a couple of days time, £50 will be too rich for my blood, and as I don't own one of any flavour I feel like I should. I realise that I can get them elsewhere, but the GW rise will of course lead to rises across the board.

My point is not to bemoan GW, but rather to ask the DA community:

i) Who has Land Raiders?

ii) Who does and thinks they are the bee's knees?

iii) Who does and feels fairly ambivalent about them?

iv) Who doesn't and has a LR-shaped hole in their life?

v) Who doesn't and is happier for it?

My favoured army is DW (foot squads with Armour support), but I've tasked myself with completing a Company by the end of 2012, so I'll be able to field most things (from the current codex at least) eventually if anyone was wondering about how it'd fit into playstyles etc.

It is quite a legendary vehicle, and one I feel I should own as a PA enthusiast. But then, GW Godhammer, or DW Crusader...? Help Please! I'd quite like 2 Crusaders and 1 Godhammer, but no way am I buying 3!!!

I own 2 LRCs and a Godhammer and I'd have three LRCs if I could... (Mrs. Dean understands the FOC.. )

Everything in your DW army is a 24" range, (outside of CMLs and any other support vehicles). A LRC will fit in perfectly, It has firepower enough to rip up a 10 squad of almost anything by itself every turn and will (unless you are unlucky)(or parked next to a SoB melta squad) soak up quite a bit of AT fire that could be directed at your termies. The new plastic kit makes assembly a breeze. The loss of the old PotMS and old smoke rules hurts a bit but we knew it was coming...

LRC, Go Get One!

I own two Godhammers and a Crusader.

I bought my 2nd god hammer right before the price hike. Still debating if it goes with the Deathwing or with the Crimson Fists. I like them because they're iconic. They're imposing. They suck up AT fire like no body's business.

Land Raiders..........Hmmmmmmm......let's see are they worth it.........well, yeah!

the Black Templar in me says CRUSADE, CRUSADE, CRUSADE, CRUSADE, CRUSADE, but the Dark Angel in me says CRUSADE, CRUSADE, CRUSADE, CRUSADE, CRUSADE. Point is the LR is a solid points sink. In my experience, most opponents are TERRIFIED of LRs. the image is usually compounded by the fact that we, as Astartes players, usually put our hardest troops in them.

I cant tell you how many games I have swayed to victory with a well placed LR, I rarely put troops in my LRs. my Enemies usually see those termies on the sidelines and ASSUME they're in the LRC. they then spend a turn or two dumping all manner of punishment into it, ignoring my footsloggers altogether. when they finally take it down, their triumphant smiles turn into groans of dismay when they realize that my army is closer than they would like........especially my Assault squads and dreads. then, just to emphisize their insignifigance compared to the glory of the Imperium of Man, Those Termies on the sidelines.......just teleport right in and really get the party started.

It's not the perfect strategy, but it works for me nine times out of nine. so yeah, LRs are awesome. at least in my experience.

I'm a pretty big fan. Since the early days, I've always felt that a DW army should have 3 things: Terminators, Dreadnoughts, Land Raiders.

Over the years I have collected:

3 Land Raiders,

2 Land Raider Crusaders

1 Land Raider Redeemer

1 Land Raider Prometheus

1 Land Raider Helios

At the least, I recommend one just so you can enjoy assaulting out of it.

I own two crusaders, a mars, and a TU...if you only buy one, make it a crusader. You want to be able to transport a squad with an attached character, no? Not to mention that 17 shots is a nice bit of horde control for an army (DW) that's lacking in that area...

Hey there, I've got a few LR's in my Motor pool:

The Bahamut (an Ares pattern, with firestorm cannons)

The Defiant (a Crusader pattern)

The Resolute (a Crusader Pattern)

The Retribution (a God-hammer Pattern)

Out of them, I find that they are fire-magnets like you wouldn't belive, and for the cost more or less of a squad of DW, sometimes they fill a need, I like the Defiant and teh Resolute for fights with the local Nid or Ork player.

I find that the Bahamut, when I get to feild her (at a wapping 300 points), she is great and locking down a whole side of the board, as nothing wants to be with in 30 inches of that beast.

I have 3 MK3 Phobos with the Goddhammer Las, A Promethius, a Helios, 2 RT era MK1 Proteus, and a crusader. Since SM lack a MBT The Land Raider fills this role right now. People tended to fear them and dump alot of fire power trying to kill them. In my mind if The LR Draws fire for 2 tujrns it has erned it poinst. That said nothing short of a drop pod can get a squad saftly into combat better then a LR and you still have alot of firpower to use after they are delivered. I always have 1 with 1500 pts or more. past 2500 I take 2 or more.

Well despite its excellent armor and being the best troop transporter i always thought the godhammer is either undergunned or overprized...i disagree with RavenAngel that LR fills the MBT role, its more a APC on steroids i think.

If i think of it, the closest to a MBT that we have is the vindi(with some severe limitations for sure), even the predator i hardly would count as a MBT which fills either pure anti inf or antitank, a true MBT should be able to do both...but that mainly depends on your personal opinion what a MBT should be i guess ;)

The Space dogs are the only chapter which has a true MBT with the Leman Russ imo...i simply hate to see them on the other side of the table, hell my worst games i had vs imperial Tank companies :P

I know exactly what you are going through. I was in the same place with my DH a few years back.

The best advice I can give you is to borrow ore proxy one and try them out. Lock at some tactics (http://www.3plusplus.net/2011/10/guest-article-using-landraiders-in-5th.html ), or have a chat with Crynn here at The Bolter and Chainsword.

My advice is always to start off with the God Hammer. Use it as a LoS blocker, fire support, command bunker, and objectives holder. But avoid rushing it into melta range to be torn to pieces, at least your first couple of games.

Great responses guys, many thanks for getting behind some ramblings that could have been essentially quite boring.

As mentioned, the inclusion of a LR for me is less one of tactics, and more a question of collection completeness. Based on responses, I think I'm going to buy a Crusader, and then keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on a Godhammer just in case...

Thanks for the tactical suggestions also, I will take them on board. As Chaplain Lucifer says, the LR is iconic for Space Marine players; I gotta have one...

Ok, so just to round off this thread, this weekend I managed to snap up a brand new Godhammer for a song, and also a metal Crusader conversion kit.

After an introduction to a drill, loads of super glue and some magnets, I'll hopefully be able to field both types of Raider, mood-dependant!

Going to go for the DW colour scheme, as I feel it'll be a transport for Terminators or force commanders (who are themselves DW), and all my other tanks are green.

Thanks again for everyone's input, and keep your eyes on my WIP thread; I suspect it'll make a starring role once the ETL is over!

$20 in magnets and a little extra time building has saved me $100's in unneeded extra landraider kits. I have 6 raiders that can switch between crusader/redeemer/godhammer by simply changing the weapons. Highly recommend you buy the godhammer kit, then buy the crusader upgrade pack, and the magnets needed for the switch out. Do it right the first time and you're golden.

Plus theres a lot to be said for a highly secured 21" charge...
