Magnets for weapon swaps

Recommended Posts

I'm doing some new models for my codex marines and I'm planning on magnetising the weapons so I can swap them around. Is it better/easier to cut the troopers wrist and have a seperation hand for each weapon or can you put the magnets in the weapons themselves with a corresponding magnet in the top of the hand?

I figured it was better to ask first, rather than ruin a whole load of special weapons.

Thanks.

For special weapons, one 2mmx1mm magnet in the wrist will be plenty for game play, but won't hold if dropped. If you have plenty of support arms, you could magnetize both wrists for a more secure weapon. Also when magnetizing, I can't stress enough how important it is to check and double check your polarisations are correct. I usually magnetize one guy and one weapon. I then use that guy and magnetize all weapon options. I place the magnet that is about to go into the weapon, on the magnet on the wrist and then push the weapon onto the magnet there, I've not messed up polarization since doing things this way.

Thanks for the input folks.

I had considered magnets at the shoulder joint, but when I've done that before on other models they've tended to 'flop' somewhat. I've decided to go with the wrist idea, and I've ordered some 2mm by 1mm neodymium magnets. These are the strongest ones I've found. Should be able to crack on with some stern guard in a week or so.

Depends on the weapon and model really. Magnetizing at the wrist saves a lot of painting time. Also, sometimes finding necessery arms or shoulderpads can be a pain. But more often than not wrist magnets tend to be wiggly and rotate into awkward positions. Shoulder magnets tend to be firmer. Go for what seems to make more sense.

Personally I wrist-magnet combi-weapons, shoulder magnet close combat weapons.

I normally just build a new upper body, and magnetize the legs and body at the waist.

That might not be possible if you're just starting out though, and don't have a big pile of spare parts to use.

For magnets, I've used the company in my sig for while.
