New. Help me build my Space Wolve army please

Hello everyone,

I have not played 40k since second edition. Have tried a few times to get goin again and have ended up with fair amount of models needing assembly and paint.

So anyway, I want to make a Space Wolves army out of the marines I have, unfortunately I dont have any wolf specific boxes. Is this too big a problem?

What I need is some advice on how I can turn what I already have into a start of a Space Wolves army. IE: what units should these guys all be painted/organized as?

I can't really buy anything else just yet so I would like to wait until this is all painted up. I will however get 1 box of a Space wolves pack and maybe a wolf upgrade sprue if they even exist.

What I currently have is this:

(everything still in open boxes and in pieces except assault termies and dreadnought, and battle for macragge marine tac squad)

-10x tac marines (from battle for Macragge boxset)

- 1 box of tactical space marines

- 2 boxes of assault space marines

- 1 box space marine veterans

- 1 box assault terminators

- 1 space marine dreadnought

- 1 predator tank

- And i have an old old rhino that I wouldnt mind using either.

Can the experts here turn this into a decent Space Wolves army? I know this is not the ideal starting point with so many generic marines, but I cant really spend more money right now, and I really dont want to do any other chapter. I figure once i get the Space wolves Pack box I can mix those guys into the normal marines to make them look better.

Any help is much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Welcome brother!

Yes, you can easily make what you have into a Space Wolves army, no problemo!

If it were me, I'd wait to get a space wolves box (or two) to kitbash with your tacticals/assault and a terminator box to kitbash with your Assault Termies.

That being said, there is nothing keeping you from painting what you already have as Space Wolves, just know that they will be kind of bland (lack of pelts, teeth, runes, totems, etc etc.)

I'd organize them like so...

Tacticals into Grey Hunters. These are the backbone of any Great Company.

Assault Squads into Sky Claws. Debatable whether they are worth it, but as your only other option would be Wolf Guard (crazzyy expensive points wise) I'd go with Sky Claws.

Veterans. Not so sure on these. Robes and such aren't really our thing, but they could be Wolf Guard I suppose.

Assault Terminators to Wolf Guard Terminators. Mix of Wolf Claws and Thunder Hammer Storm Shields. (Though I'd wait to kitbash with Space Wolves TDA box for more weapon options)

Dreadnought is fine as is as well as the Predator and Rhino.

Hope this helps! Looking forward to seeing your army. ;)

Thanks for the advice Kassill. I will try to pickup the space wolves pack box tonight to give me some wolf bits, I really want to get started gluing these guys together.

Unfortunately i have already glued together the assault terminators. Including alot of the fancy stuff they supply...so they are pretty busy looking already...and it doesn't seem like this plastic glue will allow me to remove pieces without hurting the model. So it looks like they will have to just remain generic terminators.

The Veterans were giving me the hardest time fitting in. Like u said, robes aren't really a wolf thing, don't know where they will fit in...maybe once I have a pelt or 2 or some tails to glue on it will help. Kinda feel struck with them. The box still has everything in it, but plastic is off, Im not sure what GW return policies are like but I doubt I can do anything with this other than use it at this point.

Whats a common weapon configuration for the Predator or dreadnought? I am an extreme novice in this game when it comes to everything. My painting/conversion skills are virtually non-existent so I doubt I will be putting magnets in anything.

keep the robed veterans. guess what, they stripped all the furr off (paint it leather) and made cloaks out of them! (wolf Guard)

your termies will be fine.

TBH i have several bland marines in my wolves stuff, they just have not been in enough conflicts to adorn their armor with all the pelts, and such. even though they are all grey hunters they are not that long in the tooth to fill their chambers with their war prizes.

One box of Spaces Wolves pack should be enough for beginning. Mix them with tactical marines and assault box. You have two boxes of assault marines, one is enough for a Skyclaws pack, so You the cool running legs from the other to make dynamic Grey Hunters. With that You should have enough to build three packs of Grey Hunters with most upgrades.

EDIT. Oops, I forgot that the box has only 5 of them. So You have to make a decision - will You field the Skyclaws, or use the minis for bits and trade away their jumppacks (these bits will be traded quite fast, I believe).

Also, You should try to trade away those veterans too, preferably for a Rhino/Razorback if possible.

Main problem is meltaguns for Grey Hunters and combimeltas on Wolf Guards. I'd suggest either getting the old Space Wolves accessory sprues from GW website (they have meltagun and cool bits for Wolf Guards, HQ kitbash and extra bare heads) or buy the metal meltaguns from their website, or probably both. Currently You should be having two - one in the tacticals box and the other in Macragge. You need ~ 7-8 meltaguns more. Also, since You have those Macragge marines, IIRC there was also one guy with missile launcher, am I right (or there was flamer and meltagun?)? Tactical box has meltagun and missile launcher as well. So You need to find the third missile launcher for a small Long Fangs pack.

If You are not low on money, I'd suggest looking at the Space Wolves battleforce - You'll get two SW packs, scouts (really good option for Wolves) and Drop Pod (situational, but since You already have a dread, it may have a place in Your list).

Keep the predator for the beginning, and get some Razorbacks (never buy Rhinos), even if You intend to use the kit as Rhino, not Razorback (just don't glue the top hatch).

offcourse it's possible! here are but a few exampels of space wolves models i made from the assault on black reach box/various standard marines, including the veterans

all it takes is some head swaps, etc. as recommended buy atleast two space wolves boxes, this will grant you enough heads etc to space wolf up those non-space wolves marines while you can use the standard space marine heads on the space wolf bodies etc :)
