The Saga of Harngvr Skyhowler

Recommended Posts

After coming up with the idea for a Lone Wolf to paint up for Kill Team style games I decided to begin writing his saga to maintain interest in the project while I awaited some of the bits I needed for him to arrive in the post. After posting my efforts in the Space Wolves sub-forum I was invited to join the E Tenebrae Lux challenge by Kassill. After thinking about it for a couple of days I thought what better way of making sure I follow this project to it's conclusion than accepting the challenge? This also gave me a neat excuse to buy a few of the new Citadel paints to take for a road test <_<. Just to be fully prepared I've composed a 'colour list' in advance so I know how I'm going to layer up the colours!

After writing his saga which can be found here I decided to paint up Harnvgr's wolf pack too (they will be ordered tomorrow when I get paid). So without more needless pre-amble I present a slightly dodgy pic of Harngvr before any painting begins. I'll put up pics of the wolves once they've arrived and been assembled;

Again apologies for the photo, I'll take a better one once he's basecoated.

cheers

James

With the bald head, goatee beard and ear-rings he looks like the doorman/bouncer dude at my local bowling alley! The guys big enough to be a Terminator too :D

Anyway, looks like you are off to a great start there - Vlka Fenryka!

thanks for the comments guys,

I got the paints I needed on friday and had a wee painting session on saturday night. I've got to say I'm pretty impressed with the new Citadel Paints. I picked up Russ Grey, Fenrisian Grey, Ulthuan Grey and White Scar. As you'll see in the photo below I've only begun blocking the main colours in at this stage but the Russ Grey basecoat on the armour plate went on very smoothly with only two thinned layers and the Ulthauan Grey only took 3 thinned layers to get a smooth coat. I did notice I had to thin the paints slightly more than I used to with the old Citadel range, infact I'd go as far as comparing them to using Foundation Paints... although they don't have the same coverage as the Foundation obviously :P. I won't be replacing all my paints in one fell swoop but I will be picking up more of the range as and when I can find an excuse to.

My rambling review aside, here's a pic of the progress so far:

You'll notice that only his upper body is present just now, I separated the components for ease of painting because of the wolf pelt and trophy chain. I'm also debating swapping his head. I really like this one but I don't think it quite fits the 'howling battlecry' part of Harnvgr's character. I've got another head in mind so I'll probably paint both up and see which looks best.

Also, the Fenrisian Wolves have arrived at the local post office so once I get back from the course I'm on this week I'll go pick them up and get them assembled and undercoated. Oh and I finished detailing his base, just need to decide on the theme for the whole kill team's bases. I'm swaying towards ruddy brown/martian to contrast with the grey armour of the Lone Wolf, but I need to pick the colours of the Wolves before committing to this as I want the bases to contrast their pelts too.

cheers

Looking good - the paint is really nice and smooth. I picked up the 40k starter box and found that the paints in there were pretty nice to use. I agree with you though, they do need a lot more thinning down than the old paints - mine were slightly lumpy as if they had dried out.

It's good to see what other peoples views are on these paints - for example, I love the new Lamenters yellow glaze, others hate it (they say it's too glossy).

Anyway, I'll be watching this with interest!

Thought I'd throw up some update photos tonight since I've had a really good afternoon painting session today:

@ Kassill: I'm glad I vowed to paint him too, hopefully this is some good progress .

@ Lestat: I found that my pot of Ulthuan Grey was kinda lumpy too :tu: still no complaints about the paints I have though. I' delighted with how the grey and white have come out on this mini.

Other progress, I've opened the Fenrisian Wolves kit box and clipped one wolf from his frame. I need to find my liquid green stuff as the seam between the two halves of the model along his belly (and thus the other four's as well) looks pretty bad... they are coming though...

cheers

I guess it's down to the higher amount of pigment in the paint that it goes lumpy. Not really a problem - just thin it down a bit more as I found :)

I'm still liking the bald head (he really does look like the bouncer). The wolf pelt is very nicely done - enough detail to make it stand out but not so much that it draws your eye away from the model as a whole.

Looks great brother! Where is the first head from though, the bald one? I can't place it.

From the SW Terminator boxed set. Its just had the mohawk shaved off in this case.

Also, nice looking model so far!

Badaab and longfang66 were correct I did shave the mohawk from one of the heads from the Wolf Guard kit. Someone used this head with the same haircut to make a miniature of A-D-B a while back and I loved the look... I've been waiting for an excuse to emulate it :P.

More pictures this evening as I've got the Fenrisian Wolves assembled:

A couple of aesthetic nitpicks aside I really like this kit, ridiculously quick and easy to clean up and assemble I did these from opening the box to finishing the basing in about an hour or so :) they'll be ready for undercoating as soon as the weather allows :).

@ Lestat: I'm glad you liked the pelt, I my aim when I was painting it was to keep it both subtle and visible as well as a different colour to the pelts of the 'live' Wolves that make up his pack. I didn't want it to look like he'd skinned one of his pack mates :P. I see what you mean about the head. Once they're both painted I'll take photos of the body with each head on and post them up for opinions.

cheers

Gotchya. Yeah, it's a neat little "conversion" :P I was actually thinking it was like that, as I had seen someone else recently use that head like that on a Fire Hawks Space marine sergeant over in one of the two Badab War threads.

Really like the poses you've done, and I'll have to echo Lestat in saying the landing one is my favorite as well. ;)

Thanks for the comments guys,

The wolves are already posed unfortunately but I did swap a couple of the heads around to make them 'mine'. I like to think that the way I've based them complements and adds to the poses... Well that's what I'm going with anyway :P

I'm in the middle of moving just now which is actually kind of handy as it's allowed me to focus on this project as it's not boxed up and it's given me the opportunity to look back over previous projects that I've let fall by the way side. I've decided that I'm going to keep most of them that way and just keep my unpainted Contemptor Dreadnought and my unbuilt Crassus out. That way I've only got three projects that are different enough for me to do different things with and keep focussed on. I've also got a single Tartaros pattern Terminator on it's way just now which will replace this project once it's concluded. Only thing I need to do now is decide how I'm going to paint things ;).

cheers

Got another pretty good session of painting in last night so both the head choices for Harngvr are done:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8160/7413879378_3a0909ed1c.jpghttp://farm6.staticflickr.com/5336/7413880034_063d35fc0d.jpg

Not sure which one looks best though, I think the original (the bald one) might be edging ahead but what do you think?

Also got his company markings done:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7124/7413880482_e9b39e3539.jpg

Still need to decide what pack markings to put on his right bracer (the yellow one) and I'm thinking that I could maybe do with adding some runes to the white pauldron too so it doesn't look quite so empty.

Still waiting for an improvement on the weather to be able to undercoat the Wolves. I haven't decided how I'm going to do their fur yet but I'm swinging towards reddy/martian looking bases so it'll be contrasting with that I think.

@ Brother Syth: thanks brother, move is almost complete and has been relatively hassle free so far ;)

cheers

I've still got a few details to add to Harngvr but aside from that I'm pretty much there with these guys now .
