ImperialTemplari
Hi guys, whats everyones opinion on back banners? they don't seem to be very popular anymore, hardle ever see marines with banners nowadays, I'm trying to decide whether to add banners to my 15mm Blood Angels. Cheers :cuss Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253838-to-banner-or-not-to-banner/ Share on other sites
Kierdale
Yes, when I got back into the hobby after a decade out I noticed a lot less backbanners! Personally I like 'em. A chance to add character and flex your freehand skills (or work on the lack thereof). However I give them to characters, tactical squads and devastators but not assault, scout or vanguard squads...banners are impractical, I must admit, and on those units in particular banners would look out of place. Which brings me to your Blood Angels. I'd say go for it when it comes to units other than those who'll be in close combat all the time. Cyrox
Gone are the days when every Sergeant had a banner, along with Chaplains, Librarians and IC, and even Dreadnoughts. I still think they have a place. My Dev and Tac sergeants usually have a banner, and one of my dreadnoughts has one too. Armies without banners make sense from a real life tactical view, as you can't roll around with one stuck to your back, but they don't look as good on the tabletop EDIT - Kierdale beat me to it :cuss Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253838-to-banner-or-not-to-banner/#findComment-3080562 Share on other sites
Sanguinius Chosen Wing
They look great for something like a japanese themed list but other then that they are just confusing. Still use them though grew up with them and can't help myself :teehee: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253838-to-banner-or-not-to-banner/#findComment-3080646 Share on other sites
Jacinda
I think it fell out of favor some when company banners and brotherhood banners became more common. This makes it less confusing about which banner does what. If you see a banner on the table, it probably has a rule associated with it. For example, all of my Chaos SM sergeants have banners but then they are functional banners that double as icons. WarriorFish
I found the banners a bit OTT back in the day (2nd) so maybe my aversion is in response to that. I think sergeants should be the only ones with banners (not including company ones etc). Of course, banners are big and like to break off so maybe that's the real reason behind their disappearance? twofour878
I use a lot of banners for my templars. All of them are just hanging parchment with scriptures written on them though. The only one with pictures on it will be my crusade standard bearer. I think they look great and try to have one in every squad. kemd12812baby
@ warriorfish - if you are worried about the banners breaking off you can always use magnets. I have used them to great success. Captain Semper
Nothing says 40k crazyness more to me than sergeant back banners! I use then and I think they are great! fivepointedstar
Where's Bad-Sam when you need him?. He made a wolf guard force with each one having a back "Blanket" to account for their epic deeds. Jofus
Once I get to starting my Ultramarine army, its behind my Iron Warriors and Necrons, I plan on giving every character and dreadnaught a banner except for ones with jump packs. But then again I am going for a more 2nd edition feel to the army. Olgerth Istaarn
I used to love backpack banners, now I hate them. I guess as I've played more, I've grown to be more utilitarian. I guess the question is what look you're going for. Do you want your Marines to look like classic Warhammer 40000 fare - that is, over the top and in your face? Then go with banners. Or are you going for a semi-realistic look (as far as it is possible in 40K)? Then go with smaller backpack toppers like the backpack skull shrines, iron halos and the like. Azekai
Olgerth is right- do what you think your chapter would do. I had a bck-banner guy for my Iron Hands successors, then I ditched it . . . I decided that they are too coldly practical for such accoutrements.
