to banner or not to banner

Recommended Posts

Yes, when I got back into the hobby after a decade out I noticed a lot less backbanners!

Personally I like 'em. A chance to add character and flex your freehand skills (or work on the lack thereof). However I give them to characters, tactical squads and devastators but not assault, scout or vanguard squads...banners are impractical, I must admit, and on those units in particular banners would look out of place.

Which brings me to your Blood Angels. I'd say go for it when it comes to units other than those who'll be in close combat all the time.

Gone are the days when every Sergeant had a banner, along with Chaplains, Librarians and IC, and even Dreadnoughts.

I still think they have a place. My Dev and Tac sergeants usually have a banner, and one of my dreadnoughts has one too.

Armies without banners make sense from a real life tactical view, as you can't roll around with one stuck to your back, but they don't look as good on the tabletop

EDIT - Kierdale beat me to it :cuss

I think it fell out of favor some when company banners and brotherhood banners became more common. This makes it less confusing about which banner does what. If you see a banner on the table, it probably has a rule associated with it. For example, all of my Chaos SM sergeants have banners but then they are functional banners that double as icons.
I found the banners a bit OTT back in the day (2nd) so maybe my aversion is in response to that. I think sergeants should be the only ones with banners (not including company ones etc). Of course, banners are big and like to break off so maybe that's the real reason behind their disappearance?

I used to love backpack banners, now I hate them. I guess as I've played more, I've grown to be more utilitarian.

I guess the question is what look you're going for. Do you want your Marines to look like classic Warhammer 40000 fare - that is, over the top and in your face? Then go with banners. Or are you going for a semi-realistic look (as far as it is possible in 40K)? Then go with smaller backpack toppers like the backpack skull shrines, iron halos and the like.
