Colonel Logan's Scythes of the Emperor Blog

Recommended Posts

Greetings fellow B&C members,

Over the last 20 years I have collected a large number of DIY chapters, The Emperor's Avengers, The Doom Knights, the Emperor's Hands, The Jade Dragons, The Star Hammers and the Storm Hammers to name those I can remember!

I have recently returned to the hobby after a 3 year hiatus and this time I decided to collect and paint and army I have always been fascinated by, the Scythes of the Emperor. I started just before the new paints came out, but was elated to have access to the new yellow after experimentation with the old range!

I have extensively researched the Scythes and am still working on my particular strikeforce's backstory, but broadly i've decided to run with most of the background, I don't regard any by the Black Library as canon however so will be ignoring those bits. I also regard the Scythes as somewhat less wiped out than the most recent fluff would suggest, believing that 3-4 companies worth of Marines remain alive, including much of the first company.

originally I intended this to be an all-infantry, Scout heavy force, but i've decided as i've gone along that while much of their heavy equipment has been lost some still remains, and Rhino chassis vehicles are relatively easy to get hold of. I also intend to include lots of older armour marks, weapons etc and eventually a contemptor as i've decided to play on the mass boarding actions aspect of their fluff. My version of the Scythes therefore are going to have been expert boarding troops long before the Tyranids arrived, this combined with their need for new equipment following the loss of their homeworld has led to them reconsecrating items they have captured during operations to cleanse/reclaim hulks, etc. the force will still be quite Scout heavy, as the surviving Marines are thinly stretched.

without further ado here are some very WIP pics of the beginnings of my strikeforce, so far it consists of a 5-man scout squad, 3 marines and a converted Captain!

WIP Marines, mostly done, just needing some tidying up and shoulder decals.

First Scout squad, I forgot to mark one out as the sergeant! Still need a little bit of tidying...and the shoulder decals

My converted Captain, due to flaws in the finecast on my 25th Anniversary model I ended up with 3 versions thanks to GW's excellent customer service. I decided to convert this one for my Scythes. He is almost finished, just some work on the base and some minor detailing to go.

looking good, i like the concept behind youre stormbolter/combi plasma, though it looks odd and misshapen to have the plasma portion extend outward from the weapon. like maybe it should have been built into the side more.

that said the color looks great.

I actually can't take credit for that, i found it in my bits box in resin. I think it may be from the Terminator Librarian set, otherwise I have no idea where I got it!

Sweet, another Scythes collector  looking forward to seeing more, you are indeed correct that combiplasma is from the termie librarian.

Another WIP shot, this one is my predator, assembled entirely from my bits box :/ I've also found 5 whole terminators, a Space Marine Command Squad, 15 Tactical Marines and a whole Landspeeder in there...

I didn't have any side sponsons for it, so i've assembled it as a kind of light or 'scout' tank which I think fits marines quite nicely, it will escort my forthcoming Razorbacks/Rhinos

An almost finished model now, my first scout biker. Having taken the pictures I can see a few bits that need tidying up.

I also tried two new techniques for me on this model, my first attempt at OSL on the headlamp, and a (failed) attempt at using weathering power on the wheels. The brush I used was wet so it just painted on as brown paint and needs re-doing.

I see now i missed the GL targeter, and theres lots of tidying up to do!

i've been working on a few on my WIPs this week, the captain posted above is almost complete now, just waiting a final highlight.

I have finished my first scout biker

Still undecided on whether the OSL and weathering powders are working for me, hopefully I can improve on both for the next bike!

two more WIPs here first of all my first use of a stippling brush in an attempt to create a Digital Camo pattern, I think this will work with a bit more practice, next time should probably highlight the base colour before the stippling :/

and finally some progression in the scout Predator. Undercoated, Yellow blocked in and shaded.

Thanks for the support guys :) I agree that a little heavier on the stippling might be better, the damn brush is not the finest tool i've ever used though!

An update for today, my Predator complete in "fresh from the factory'' condition. It isn't quite finished yet as I intend to neaten up some of the highlights, maybe redo the headlamps and then weather it. Theres a few small pieces I might still add to it too.

I had meant for my next update to be something that wasn't the same predator, however I decided to just get this done.

behold the first totally finished part of this army!

when I was assembling it i thought it looked a little bland without anything on the sides and had the idea to fir some anti-RPG grills. I think it came off ok, I managed to make them completely mis-aligned but I feel it adds to the 'battlefield modification' aspect... i've also added some weathering.

Fantastic work so far, I'm always impressed by people who manage to make yellow look badass

I'm curious about those grills though, how exactly would they work?

I'm not sure exactly how they work, but I believe the idea is that the Rpg gets caught in the grill, stopping it directing the explosion into the vehicle's armour. I've copied it from ISAF vehicles in Afghanistan, although I may have made the squares a bit too large!

:) Great idea there with the mesh on the side! Hope you don't mind if I steal the idea for some extra armour on my Rhino chassis vehicles. Having seen the mesh they use on modern tanks and APC's up close (at least for us aussies), it is big, but gets the point across. My only gripe with how you've done it is that it sits a little tall - the top of the mesh looks like it would get in the way of the tank's main gun.

Feel free to use it!

It does indeed sit a little tall and the turret can't rotate without raising the gun. When put it together I had it all fitting flush with the top of the armour but when it came to sticking it on this was the only place I could get it to fit... not sure what happened inbetween. If I chop the mesh down level with the top horizontal bar it will work but I like the prongs sticking up.

I like the mesh concept (even though IRL it is only for light vehicles, battle tanks have Reactive Armour, as the mesh does nothing against HEAT weapons) but it does seem to need to be more... contoured I guess is the right word. It looks nice with the rods on top, but the front looks like it need to be clipped down, otherwise it has kind of a slap-dash look. But the paint itself is very sharp and clean. I always believed that Marine vehicles should look like they are maintained to a polished finish, out of respect for the machine spirit and the honour of the chapters colours.

  • 2 months later...

Hello again everybody, apologies for the delay in any progress on my Scythes, I was moving house and then without internet for over a month...the horror!

I have not been idle however during this time, firstly I used the occasion of a friend's wedding in Nottingham to visit Warhammer World

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0826.jpg

as you can see this was a somewhat expensive trip!

since then I have worked on a few things, The Contemptor is assembled and painted, but not to my satisfaction so he will have to wait for another update, i've finished painting the first Space Marine i'm happy with so far, including freehand Chapter symbol.

I give you Brother Plamen.

currently I intend for him to be a member of a command squad, but he might end up in a Sternguard or Tactical Squad, i'm not sure on army composition yet.

I've also finished a conversion and paintjob of which I am rather proud this chap is intended to be one of the center-peices of the army.

I promise i'll try and take some better pictures at some point, I have a good light but need to make an area to photograph them in. I'm actually really pleased with how these models look, they're not Golden Demon standard by any stretch but the photos don't do them justice at all.

  • 2 weeks later...

My first two Devastators, the missile launcher guy is an homage to the first ever Marine I assembled, a Beaky RTB01 Marine with rocket launcher back in 1993, this time i've stuck it on the correct part of the model too!

I love these Forge World Heavy Weapons, theres just something missing about the current plastic devastators.

need to start painting some actual bolter armed marines now...
