Kierdale
Beautiful! I have four Devs with that missile launcher myself. Ah the nostalgia. Must get myself the other heavy weapons pack too. You're building all the weapon combinations (las cannon, heavy bolter, heavy plasma gun, multi melta and two missile launchers)? Colonel_ Logan
Beautiful!I have four Devs with that missile launcher myself. Ah the nostalgia. Must get myself the other heavy weapons pack too. You're building all the weapon combinations (las cannon, heavy bolter, heavy plasma gun, multi melta and two missile launchers)? I'm attempting to use the Heavy bolter to make a retro scout. I intended to have the Dev squad be 2x missile Launchers, Lascannon and then one of the others :s. I might just assemble them all anyway. I also bought the plastic devastator box so I could chuck in some variation, and i'm probably going to have a Tactical Squad too, the current rules are quite limiting stylistically in making you have a 10-man squad if you want a heavy weapon. i must add that i'm really enjoying making this army, i've been collecting for 20 years and tried several vari-colour marine armies in the mid-90s but this is the first non block colour Marine army i've done since I suddenly got ok-ish at painting in 2004, its looks so much more striking than my own DIY chapters. The new paints certainly make a bold strong yellow a lot easier to paint. ManiacMadhatter
Thinking of starting a loyalist space marine chapter and the Scythes of the Emperor caught my eye as a pretty cool chapter. Colonel_ Logan
Thinking of starting a loyalist space marine chapter and the Scythes of the Emperor caught my eye as a pretty cool chapter. Any ideas for getting started on them? advice for painting them? My advice is not to get too hung up on the background thats available and collect what you want, i'm planning a blog post soon detailing my thoughts on the Scythes. In terms of painting i'm sure you can find better guides out there but the method i have evolved to so far is: Black undercoat Basecoat of Iyanden Darksun - could easily be dropped entirely or replaced with another coat of Averland Sunset Maincoat of Averland Sunset Shade with Casandora Yellow Highlight with Yriel Yellow Glaze with Lamernters Yellow i've never been happy with mixing up colours consistently hence using all of these straight from the pot, on my next model I plan to experiment with Highlighting back to Averland sunset then doing only extreme edges with Yriel Yellow. For black I was initally highlighting with Adeptus Battlegrey, then switched to Shadow Grey, however I quickly ran out of that as my pot was over 10 years old and was forced to buy The Fang which I find to be much 'bluer' and so have switched back to Adeptus Battegrey. I think these colours give me a good looking model which is suitably 'Grimdark' for me. My chest Eagles etc are XV-88, highlighted with Screaming Skull, washed with Gryphonne Sepia, and if they don't look dark enough I give them a Devlan Mud too. I have a wide selection of paints from over 20 years of the hobby, including an Ultramarine blue I bought in 1993 that stick works. Very survive from GWs short fat pots with screw tops era, or their successors with the flip lids. The new range of paints is easily the best they have ever produced in my opinion, but I had just bought 12 paints from the previous range the week before they were released, hence still using some of those! I tried to use decals but hated them so have started hand-painting them, don't try this when inebriated! Colonel_ Logan
So I find myself with a spare few minutes so time for a proper blog post firstly some new photos A bolter Marine for my devastator squad, his bayonet is from the original plastic space marine set which has been in my bits box for best part of two decades http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0910.jpg and a proper WIP shot, here we have a an apothecary and command squad member, two sniper scouts and my Scoutbike sergeant, featuring vintage metal scout head. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0911.jpg so i thought I would take you all through some of the ideas behind my Scythes. We know that their homeworld was destroyed and that they made a last stand on Miral (which makes no sense, why would a Space Marine chapter flee their homeworld to make a last stand on another planet against a spacefaring beast (but i digress). the standard view is that the Scythes have just a handful of brother Marines left and many scouts as they try to rebuild. Other views even deny them access to new geneseed due to the loss of their homeworld. My view however dictates that a large number of The Scythes were away from their homeworld at the time of the invasion, as is normal for most Space Marine Chapters. From IA9+10 we know that each Strike Cruiser and Battle Barge can have depositories of geneseed in their shrine, and the Scythes may also be granted some of their tithed geneseed by the Magos biologis. So while I see them as a chapter who has taken significant losses, and plan to feature scouts heavily, I do not see them as a Chapter on the brink other than that they are engaged in a fight to the death with repeated tyranid invasions, as well as other alien races. Back in the old epic games of Space Marine/Titan Legions there was a formation card featured in White Dwarf which was for an airborne assault by the Scythes First Company Terminators, this was for the Ichar IV campaign which ocurs either simultaneously or after the destruction of Sotha so they at least were not present, suggesting many of their Terminators and likely a Battle Barge are still extant. Due to the loss of their homeworld however they will be reliant on scavenging/begging/borrowing for much of their replacement equipment, so I intend to use lots of mixes of different armour types. In particular I plan to use a lot of Great Crusade/Pre-heresy items as i'm working up some background based around their boarding prowess. We know all Space Marine chapters are heavily involved in investigating and cleansing Space Hulks and other drifting wreckage (Space Crusade/Space Hulk). We also know that they Sycthes took the fight to the Tyranid vessels when they attacked Sotha, and while looking for any 'captured' battle brothers (Advanced Space Crusade/Tyranid Attack/Tyranid Codices 2nd and 3rd edition). From this I have developed the idea that my Scythes have boarded, recovered and reconsecrated a troopship/transport of some sort from the Great Crusade, allowing them to replenish themselves in this time of need. Perhaps it is a gift from the emperor? perhaps the vicissitudes of the warp, who knows. In terms of the look of the models I am aiming for quite but not overly Grim Dark in tone. I see the Sycthes as an Ultramarine successor but with both a more practical outlook and some feral elements dicated by their recruitment pool. I'm emphasising the old mohawk look on the scouts in particular as a reference to their recruitment on Miral and toning down the Greco-Roman elements (none present so far!). They're also not a 'knightly' chapter so minimal scrolls, seals, etc. I'm also working up something about their beliefs and outlook, I see them as being dedicated to the Emperor and his subjects, and their name raises some intriguing possibilities. In mythology we have the obvious associations of scythes with Death/The Grim Reaper, based on the use of Scythes as agricultural implements engaged in the impartial reaping or harvesting of the fields. Scythes are also a highly efficient tool, which require skill and precision to use effectively (Sounds like Space Marines to me!) So perhaps The Scythes are a highly pragmatic chapter, dedicated to the Emperor and seeing themselves as the designated harvesters of His enemies, charged with culling the wheat from the chaff amongst mankind, whilst engaging in the wholesale removal of the alien threat. Sounds like a perfect match up against the waves of tyranids battering the Eastern Fringe to me. Colonel_ Logan
So, i've decided to post my Contemptor. He was finished about a month ago, but i'm not sure whether to re-highlight him with adeptus grey instead of The Fang or whether to weather him a bit http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0914_zps60e89a88.jpg heres a very- wip of my new Captain model, the deaths head mask continuing my 'scythes as symbols of death' theme http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0913_zpsf990d931.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253869-colonel-logans-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/page/2/#findComment-3183085 Share on other sites
Mogsam
I like your contemptor! I've also been thinking about using forge world parts on my own scythes due to the destruction of the homeworld. Looks good! Colonel_ Logan
Actually got some time off so was able to progress a bit with my Scythes, firstly I wanted to make a Sergeant for my Devastator squad and decided he would have some MK8 armour, I couldn't find a head to fit in the collar so went with bareheaded with a helmet on the belt, I think he looks okish. I'm not especially happy with the Mk8 armour and may do another sergeant in an older Mk at some point. Sergeant Lebna http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0915.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0916.jpg Next is the a Devastator with Multi-Melta, I had intended for all regular marines to be helmetted, but I got hold of this Space Wolf head and decided to keep the mohawk theme running through the army somewhat. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0917.jpg and a group shot of my devastator squad so far Squad Lebna WIP http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0918.jpg Finally a WIP of my new Captain model. These parts, from the Sevrin Loth and character upgrade sets have been a pleasure to work with, so finely cast and detailed. Quite a contrast to the pig of a time i'm having with my Deimos Predator http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_0919.jpg In a previous post I mentioned that I was trying to avoid Greco-roman embellishments, but thought a Captain would make an excellent exception to the rule, just enough to show their Ultramarine genesis, without looking like Ultramarines themselves. This Honour Guard chest makes some awesome Artificier armour, and no Scythes Captain should be without bionics imho. Colonel_ Logan
Another delayed update due to moving job and my Girlfriend 'borrowing' the camera for a week. Heres the latest bolter marine, sporting some nifty bionics after an encounter with a hungry Tyranid http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1009.jpg This poor chap needs a bit of retouching I see there, gone a bit heavy on the highlights. and now the glacial progress on my new Captain model, i'm partly waiting to see what extra bits Forgeworld come out with, I fancy one of those legion commander backpacks for him, but i'm very pleased with how this looks so far, this head is unbelievably badass. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1008.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253869-colonel-logans-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/page/2/#findComment-3215239 Share on other sites
Tyrannicide
but i'm very pleased with how this looks so far, this head is unbelievably badass. Yes, yes it is. I like it so far, though I have a feeling he'll look better with arms. :) Love the Scythes and you're doing them justice, dude. Colonel_ Logan
After a very long wait I bring an update! I was waiting for 2 months for Forgeworld to release the backbanners they showed at Games Day, which I wanted for Captain Abs-Marine. i'm not sure now if it works or not, but he looks like a Genetically modified Space badass anyway I present Captain Xerxes of the Scythes of the Emperor 5th company http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1010.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1011.jpg I've also finished the first two members of his command squad, The apothecary i was a bit disappointed with, the model looks great buts it to a slightly bigger scale than the rest of the marine range! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1012.jpg I like this model as he is a bit of a kitbash, the bolt pistol arm is from an old metal chaos model. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1013.jpg Currently my desk has two more devastators, a Deimos predator executioner, an assault marine and the scout bike sergeant i've been working on for 6 months :s i've been a bit stymied recently by putting my back out again. Colonel_ Logan
Love that captain! Fantastic work. What more do you have in store? Thanks very much :tu: Next up are two more devastators, but I am also working on a kitbash/minor conversion for a 1st company captain/possible chapter master using Asterion Moloc as the base. I had settled on the parts for him and he is half assembled and painted but with possible Scythe equipped models to be released by FW at an indeterminate point in the future I may hold out until these come out in case there is an awesome scythe right arm I can use. Pics of my WiP will be up tomorrow hopefully! I could really do with assembling some more troops choices, at the moment characters almost outnumber my regular marines and scouts :s Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253869-colonel-logans-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/page/2/#findComment-3261380 Share on other sites

Colonel_ Logan
Hello again, wow I can't believe its been 7 months since I last posted. For a while I was stymied by the weather: I ran out of undercoated models and it was too cold to spraypaint! I was also distracted from my Scythes for a while by some Christmas presents, behold the Scythes new allies: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1023_zpsac3cb4b2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1024_zps472b9430.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1025_zps5f30aad9.jpg These models were absolutely wonderful to build and paint, and I intend to gradually add more to my forces. I have made some small addition though, firstly there are two more Devastator marines. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1022_zpsdc9f6557.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1021_zps3fbc9325.jpg and a genuine WiP of a new predator. Having taken these photos I see its even more of a work in progress than I thought. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1019_zps9a41dbbf.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1018_zpse8e6d717.jpg I've also made some modifications to my original Predator, I've trimmed down the extra armour as suggested by Excubitor and Imperial Deceit http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/colonel_logan/SAM_1020_zps4596ee82.jpg I really need to find a better way to take photos, none of my models look this bad in the flesh :s Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253869-colonel-logans-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/page/2/#findComment-3395045 Share on other sites
exetus
Scythes of the Emperor were the Chapter of the first terminator I had ever owned... he came with the Tyranid Attack boxed game and he was badass. I've always had a soft spot for the sons of Sotha and these look great. A couple of small critiques (and let me start off with you being a much better painter than I): 1. As far as the extra armor on that tank goes, I'd recommend a smaller grill size... the standard one for our vehicles over in Southwest Asia is barely big enough for a warhead to fit through exactly and yours is a little too spacious. Otherwise it looks great. If you're going to do it again, I would recommend more horizontal bars for it. 2. Your yellow is spectacular. It feels warm and looks great. Your black, however, doesn't measure up. I don't know if using a dark blue/purplish wash would help or whatnot, but I'd look to find a way to make your black look as deep and rich as your yellow, because I think it takes away from it. Thanks very much exetus, constructive criticism is always useful. I agree my black lacks something, and will certainly try a wash on the next model I do. I also agree on the grill, I probably won't do it again but you're definitely right about the spacing. It's nice to see someone else who played Tyranid attack, Advanced Space Crusade and Tyranid Attack were the 2nd and 3rd GW games I played back in the early 90s, after Blood Bowl.
