Ok, so I got this model (metal) over 2 years ago and it was a bad paint job. I wish I would have taken pictures of the model as a WIP... But hindsite is 20/20. Well here he is. Questions and comments are welcome.

Casperatis:

I think he looks amazing. I really like how you've used blue for the highlights as opposed to grey. The Adeptus Mechanicus symbol and the freehand on the book are also very well done. Finally, your whites look smooth and even; something I've never managed to accomplish.

Thanks for sharing!

With all the black and the metal that is not gold I used asurmen blue wash. The "blue" I used for high lighting the black was shadow gray. Again I used the asurmen blue wash after I painted the model and only over the black and non-gold metals.

Thanks

Edit: for the armor I used a thin line of "regal blue" and then a final highlight of "shadow gray". And then with all my blacks I used asurmen blue wash to finish it up.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I would really like to know how I could improve on my painting. so if anyone could give me some info on how to paint a little better than I am I would be greatful.

That's a cool job there Casperatis, i really like the blue HL on the black bits.

CnC, I'd paint some power effects on the Sword, it will deepen the blackness that you are trying to achieve (and doing a great job I might add)

I was waiting for a comment about his sword, it's just chaos black. I am very hesitant about highlighting swords because it never looks right to me.

The two thoughts I had about it was.

1. Boltgun metal and 2 washes of asurmen blue.

This would make the sword look darker then the rest of the metal of the bike.

2. Highlight it like I did with the black armour.

Regal blue, shadow gray, asurmen blue wash. But I don't want the sword blending in with the armour. Anyone have any ideas on how the sword could look better?

Edit: added 2 pictures

Um. Yeah I really hate basing my models. But Don't worry, it will happen really soon.

What do you guys think of a DA army based only in snow?

This is the last highlight I did. It's of my Libby. Don't get me wrong, I will not make Sammy's sword like this.

And this is of just a plain old sgt. with a power sword.

These pictures are just to give you an idea of my highlighting of swords.

Thanks again for the comments.

If you are trying to keep the obsidian appearance, you could try the following:

-Grab a couple of obsidian spear tip/arrow head/dagger images

-Paint some lines of Hawk Turquoise onto your Chaos Black base to start an obsidian blade effect

-Highlight this with some thin lines in the center of Hawk Turquoise with a 1:1 Hawk Turquoise:Ice Blue mix

-Cover all this with some gloss varnish to give it the "shine" that stone would have

If you are using the new paints, you are probably looking at using Sotek Green in place of Hawk Turquoise (not sure how close a match those are), and you might be able to get away with Temple Guard Blue, as it appears to be a brighter turquoise, but if they don't contain enough blue, you may need to mix in a bit of Lothern Blue to brighten and adjust the hue.

I have not tried this, so I don't have an example I could show, but there was a WD that had this effect on one of their new Ogre Stonehorn thingies and it actually looked pretty nice.

If you are looking for a traditional power weapon effect, here's a link to a video I really like by catattafish on YouTube (I think I had previously written cattafish, going to need to edit my post, anyway...) that contains some awesome examples of painting lightning effects:

I like to use that painting method a lot, you can see it on the claws and thunderhammers for my Terminators if you want to see examples.

I really like your rendition of the model, it looks good with the blued steel appearance you've achieved.
